The cottage has spacious bedrooms with hardwood floors, original plaster walls & a kitchen island made from early 1900 2ft wide boards. Both sofas fold out into beds for extra accommodations. It sits near the New River and the Norfolk & Western railway.
There is currently a hotplate for cooking, a microwave and toaster, a refrigerator, cookware, plates, cups, glassware and silverware.
We have Smart TV hook up with a Netflix account just for the house, locally made soap and locally roasted coffee. We provide ear plugs for guests who prefer not to hear the train.
The cottage is located next to The Palisades Restaurant in an old resort village which was once a thriving destination and a stop on the N & W Railroad. A destination once again, the village is coming back to life with an award winning restaurant, artisan shop and now lodging.
Since I run The Palisades Restaurant, my interaction with guests is pretty much in the beginning when I show everyone the space. Of course, if something is needed, I'm right next door.
As an added service, we guarantee dinner reservations at The Palisades Restaurant for guests. Please request reservations for the day, time and number of guests at the time of booking.
No public transportation exists.
Shaena grew up in Pembroke, Virginia just two miles from the site of the cottage. She remembers visiting Pyne's General Store, which was located right next to the cottage, as a little girl with her family. In 2009, she turned the building into The Palisades Restaurant. She has been in the restaurant and event businesses for over 20 years. Her extensive experience includes producing high-profile worldwide events such as the award-winning 2004 International VSA Arts Festival in Washington, D.C., the 2002 U.S. Olympic Torch Relay and the 1998 World Exposition in Lisbon, Portugal.
After traveling to all of the seven continents, including Antarctica, Shaena has returned to Giles County which she considers one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
Shaena Muldoon purchased this house in 2007
Mr. Hunter's Cottage is located in Giles County – one of the most scenic areas in Virginia. Before dining at the Palisades restaurant right next door, you can work up an appetite by hiking to the Cascades, a natural waterfall. Or grab a paddle and canoe down the New River – the worlds second oldest waterway. Or visit Giles’ three historic covered bridges – the most of any county in the state. Giles County offers numerous recreational activities so there's more than just one reason you’ll want to come to visit.
Enjoy the rumble of passing trains as the cottage is located 50 feet from the tracks in the bucolic mountains of southwest Virginia.
It was one of our most enjoyable VRBO getaways ever. Eggleston and the house were fun pleasant trips back in time. Sheana couldn't do enough to make sure our stay was comfortable and our every wish was taken care of. At dinner, she even introduced us to someone that allowed us to park at their house, near the stadium, for the Ga Tech-Va Tech football game since we had never been to Blacksburg before. What a beautiful hike to Cascade Falls, especially with her pointers and guidance. Our only regret is we did not make reservations for dinner at The Palisades Restaurant for both nights!
Had a wonderful time with plenty to do in the area. Fresh cut flowers and hand made soap a special touch just for us. Two suites were perfect for us, but there is an upstairs if needed. Ate in the owners restaurant and it was fabulous! Wonderful trip!
our group of had an amazing weekend at Shaena's property in Eggleston which included plenty of time spent in the sun on the porches or in the yard facing the rail tracks overlooking the river, home-made scones prepared by Shaena's Kitchen, and 2 amazing meals at the at the Palisades Restaurant next door. Shaena was very welcoming and helpful while we were there, and despite our late arrival getting into the property was effortless. I would recommend this house for anybody looking for a weekend near the New River with creature comforts at your fingertips.
We (a group of six teens) had a great time staying at the cottage for 2 nights. The restaurant next door was really convenient and the cottage was only a couple of miles from a waterfall, and a place for renting kayaks, bikes and rafts. The locals were really friendly and invited us for going hunting with them. But because most of us were vegetarians and all of us against sport hunting, we didn't go.
The cottage had 3 TVs with Netflix on all of them. That was really useful for us after sunset as there isn't much to do in a rural area like Eggleston at night. The host was really friendly and courteous.
I'd highly recommend the cottage to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway/vacation and likes to get up early in the morning (that's just how rural life works).
The cottage is a bucolic setting just above the New River in the small village of Eggleston, VA. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides and is situated 50 feet from the Norfolk and Western train line, which adds an element of rustic charm and enables our guests to enjoy hearing and seeing the occasional freight train rumbling past on its way down the river.
