About the property

Ocean front 1 bedroom apartment with view on the island of Faial.

You couldn't be closer to the water's edge in our self-catering suite at the head of a slipway and old historic port, now exclusively recreational. Whether your choice is bathing in the warm, clear, Gulf Stream waters, fishing, diving or boating, it is all available right at your door!

We are also positioned in a UNESCO protected area, right at the starting point of a popular hiking trail that meanders through a UNESCO designated, historic, rock-walled, Verdelho wine growing area.

For the more adventurous, the imposing Pico Mountain, the highest in Portugal at 2,351 meters, offers climbers the opportunity to climb a classic volcanic 'cone' and from the summit have the unsurpassed view of the entire central group of islands.

The unit, although most comfortable for just a couple, is equipped with a double bed and a single bed in a large bedroom with a double sleeper-couch in the living room, in the event of more sleeping space being needed. This open-plan living room includes a kitchen equipped with gas stove, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery and a dining area with inter-leading shower and toilet facilities.

The main town of Madalena is just 7 kilometers away where 2 supermarkets, museums, restaurants, bars and local shops can be found.

About Property Manager/Owner

I was born on Faial Island in 1977, where I grew up with a deep passion for the ocean. I started fishing at a young age, gaining experience in many traditional fishing activities, from small wooden boats to the bigger tuna fishing vessels. Also freediving and sustainable spearfishing became popular activities.

Six years ago I moved to Pico Island where, for two consecutive seasons, I worked as a skipper for a local whale watching and dolphin swimming organisation and diving school. Here I had the opportunity to participate in the training of “shark diving guide” with Dr. Eric Ritter and a Wild Whale and Dolphin workshop with Dr. Ingrid Visser. At the same time I worked a part-time contract with the fisheries program at the University of the Azores as a sampler at the fish auction, gaining knowledge of all fishing activities conducted around the islands.

Recently I completed the course “Maritime Tour Operator” at the University of the Azores, where I obtained Portugal’s highest qualification of “Patrão de Alto Mar” (freely translated as Ocean Skipper) and "Dive Master", which includes subjects as meteorology, oceanography, legislation, safety, basic life support and others.

My experiences and passion for the ocean led me to buy my own fishing boat to earn my living. And I decided to initiate a project allowing visitors to the Azores to join in a traditional fishing activity, to have a unique experience learning about the ocean and Azorean traditions. I now also have the opportunity to receive visitors at my “Casa do Cais”, my ocean house, where people have a wonderful base for a fantastic holiday right on the ocean front. Be welcome please and make yourself at home!

Great view, comfortable cottage, great host

  • 5 of 5

The view from the dining table of the channel and Faial on the other side is amazing, and one is always aware of the nearness of the sea and its constantly changing moods. The waves lashed up by the tail end of hurricane Ophelia were quite something to watch, but the cottage is a safe distance away, and we never felt threatened.

Roger, our host, has done a great job converting an old boatshed into a comfortable living space while maintaining the traditional character of the place - very simple, with whitewashed walls running right up to the open beams below the pitched roof, which is finished attractively inside with varnished planking. The walk-in shower and the toilet/wash-hand basin are in separate rooms just off the big front room, which is the living/kitchen/dining area. Microwave and stove-top for cooking, big refrigerator, adequate supply of kitchenware for a small party. Two easy chairs and a futon/couch.The big back room is the bedroom, with one large bed and two smaller ones, and plenty of cupboard space.

Roger, who is a fisherman while he develops his career in educating local people and visitors in ecological best practices related to the ocean, lives across the courtyard and upstairs and is pleased to answer any questions and provide suggestions for activities and places to visit. He's a very engaging and interesting guy who clearly loves what he's doing, and speaks excellent English: a great host. His two cats are friendly visitors to the cottage.

The cottage is on the coast road that leads north into the UNESCO World Heritage Landscape of the Pico vineyards, a great expanse of tiny fields enclosed by black volcanic stone walls, protecting the grapes from the wind. Going south is a rugged coastal walking trail - more rock-hopping over lava formations than walking, it seemed to me. Behind the cottage is the towering mass of Pico, the dormant volcano that gives the big island its name, sometimes seen, sometimes shrouded in mist. Its green forested hillsides are a contrast to the drier coast. You'll need a car to explore the island, and for the ten-minute run into Madalena to pick up supplies at the Sol-Mar supermarket, or to catch the ferry over to Horta on Faial.

The cottage is a great base from which to explore the island, and a comfortable place to relax in or spend a rainy day in watching the wind and waves. We really enjoyed our stay.

We enjoyed our stay at this apartment

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was as advertised, and very spacious. The owner lived next door and was responsive to quickly change a burnt lightbulb. He was gracious and offered us insights to the isle of Pico. It was a little disappointing that our closed courtyard does not directly overlook the ocean. Great location near Madelena. Recommended.
