Our group of 12 retired women found the charm of this historic river front home very relaxing. It has lots of space and an elegant dining room table that seated all of us. We enjoyed the front porch overlooking the river as we eagerly watched for the huge freighters to pass.
In spite of the warm weather we were comfortable sleeping with fans and found the beds comfortable.
The old plumbing worried us a bit, but it added to the ambiance of "Gilded Age".
We opted to buy drinking water as we learned the water source for the house was from the river.
The house is full of old charm with wonderful access to the water. It is large with lots of room for big groups. Each bedroom has its own bathroom. The screen porch overlooking the river was awesome. The porch was my favorite feature and the reason I would recommend the house to others or consider returning myself. Of course old charm also means no AC and the quirks of old houses. There is only one shower and one of the bathtubs was broken during our visit. They asked us to take our shoes off in the house and only eat in the kitchen and dining room. Clean-up is minimal when you leave. Put dirty towels and sheets in the tub, although getting a text at 6:00am on the day of check-out to tell us this wasn't pleasant, so just know ahead of time and turn off your phone if you sleep next to it. My aunt and parents said they heard mice and there was critter poop on the counter each morning so all food needs to be stored away. The large $1000 security deposit was returned in 6 days.
The house is nicely located between Clayton and Alexandria Bay. We went to Boldt Castle, a boat tour to the lighthouse, enjoyed Wellesley Island State Park, and the nearby winery tastings. There is only one key for the entire party, so you have to coordinate outings if people go to different places.
Lovely location and home. Home has all the charm of a the Thousand Islands and obviously alot of history!
We had a very relaxing time with our three adult children (18-22). The porch or the adirondack chairs by the river ate great places to wile away the hours and relax with a good book.
The house was perfect. It was absolutely charming and it felt like it was from a different era. The rooms are spacious and have a nostalgic feel. Our stay at "Always" was tranquil and just what we needed. There was plenty for the kids to do and the adults enjoyed just sitting on the massive wrap around porch and watching the activities and wildlife on the river. Only minutes from the towns of Clayton and Alexandria Bay, the house was very convenient to shopping and boating. Had the best time there and would recommend this house to everyone. Would definitely return! Thanks Jackie!
