This place is rather different from the norm. I like to think of my house as a Bohemian/Funhouse/Museum, due to the decor and the awesome vibe. The room itself is a big 20'x20', with 11' ceiling. (There is no private entrance. And the room is next to the kitchen and living room.)
I mean, it's big. The pics do no justice. It contains a queen size canopy bed, along with a thick full size futon. An in-room mini refrigerator., microwave, and coffee maker are included. There is no t.v. in the room, because you aren't coming to Nashville to watch television, right? (But wifi is provided.) It's actually the original bedroom in a 110 y.o. Queen Anne Victorian style house, and comes with a private bathroom, with original claw-foot tub, featuring gold-plated European-style hand held fixtures. The house is located smack dab in the middle of Lockeland Springs, probably the most desirable of all East Nashville subdivisions. It's a half mile to the famous '5-Points' area, which includes a post office, music stores, library, mom&pop hardware store, local hand-made ice cream parlor, veterinarian service and numerous drinking establishments (including the “5 Spot” and "The Post", as seen on the hit ABC TV show “Nashville”) And quality restaurants!! - it seems there are more and more everyday!! We're also a half mile (in the other direction) to Shelby Park, with hiking, biking, and kayak rentals on the Cumberland River. And of the course our own Dog Park. (Oh - we do accept some pets, but beware - there are 2 male (indoor/outdoor) cats living here with me and a big, sweet dog (also indoor/outdoor, of course. The animals do not ever have access to the room, so there is very little dander to worry about.) We are 5 houses from the nearest bus stop, and it's only a 6 minute drive to downtown.
I am a divorced 60 y.o. professional musician, living with my 115 lb. dog - Ms. Beulah - and 2 cats, Amos & Andy. I have a very irreverent sense of humor, and consider myself to be rather liberal. I enjoy meeting folks from all walks of life, love reading books and I love to travel.
Peter Hyrka purchased this apartment in 2003
My house is rather unique, in that it's not a total rehab job with shiny floors and sparkling chandeliers. Hardly a right angle anywhere, due to it's age. I like to refer to it as "vintage funhouse/museum," as there are quite a few bits of art work and curious about. In other words, rather "bohemian."
Location, location, location!
My wife and I spent a few days over New Years at this little gem in East Nashville and really loved it. The room is comfy, quiet and shabby-chic elegant, as is the rest of the house. Peter is a gracious host, offering us a glass of wine upon arrival and a ride to the 5 Spot to catch some music, just down the road. The house is set up so that if you want privacy, you've got it. If you want to interact, no issue. This is not a four star B&B or guest hotel, but rather a cool little intro to the rabid splendor of East Nashville. If you need a high end and mainstream experience, best to move on to another choice. But if you want a boho vibe, a musical atmosphere, the company of laid back lazy dog and two instantly likable cats, and the bonus of being able to walk to everything in the neighborhood (restaurants, pubs, bakery, cafes, shopping), then you're in the right place.
Bonus notes - parking is easy (right in front, on the street) and downtown, the Gulch and Broadway are just a ten minute Uber ride away.
Peter was friendly, respectful of our privacy, and the bed was very comfortable. We loved Miss Beulah! The claw foot tub was great. Some folks might want a shower but Peter offers other bathroom for that. We had a good time
Peter was probably the best host I’ve had so far. If you’re staying in someone else’s home you can expect to see them frequently. Peter was accommodating and social and never intrusive while we were visiting. He let my puppy wander around the house and yard at will with no complaint and shared pizza at the table one night. Even a walk around the neighborhood to show the local dining. The room was plenty large enough for two and very comfortable. Staying with Peter was the highlight of the trip to Nashville. I’m glad the other places were booked up or we would have missed out on such a great place.
I rented the property Oct 21-24. The room matched the description on line. I settled in noticing the house seemed chilly. I was disappointed the bedroom adjoined the living room and was so close to the kitchen. The bedroom had a latch style lock inside that did not seem very secure. Also, it didn't appear the room could be secured from outside.
Shortly after arriving, I told Peter I was going out. He informed me that he would be leaving to bar tend around 7 pm. Knowing I would get back earlier, I asked for a house key. He answered that the house typically was left unlocked but showed me where a key was hidden.
Later, I returned to a quiet, cold house. I looked for a thermostat or space heater in my room and did not find either. I eventually discovered a thermostat off the living room. The setting were: "cool, off, heat". It was set on cool 62.
I retired early as I needed to wake up at 6:30 am. Later that night I awakened to Peter's voice and other male voices. I could hear loud laughing and music. This went on for 2-3 hours ending around 3:30 am. I was livid but did not want to get up, get dressed, and go out as a woman alone to confront strange men who were partying. It felt risky. I decided to get though it and leave come morning.
When I woke up, there was alcohol and weed in the kitchen. I did not leave a note when left.
Later Peter messaged- Please tell me you weren't in the house last night. I assumed you were out, hence a bunch of late night noise. It won't happen again.
I replied- I did message you on Saturday through the VRBO site and am surprised that it is not showing. I was in the house Friday night and find your assumption that you thought I was out to be pretty lame. I have started a complaint process and request a full refund.
Peter replied- I do wish you had let me know. Any other guest would have done the same. The door was slightly ajar, so I assumed you were out. You will get a full refund.
I'm taken aback by this "any other guest would have spoken up" response. I was silent because I was afraid. I didn't know the men partying in the house. I did not want a bad situation to get worse. I'm sure there are people who would have spoken up. Nonetheless, I chose not to and should not be shamed for my decision. That this owner takes such a position feels grossly disrespectful. My expectation is that a considerate owner would KNOW where the renter was before having a night party.
If you are looking for affordable housing close to the down town area of Nashville this is a great option. The room was as the picture shows and quite comfortable. Peter is a friendly and kind host and tries his best to make your stay as great as possible.
The room was very large and accommodating. We were greeted upon arrival and there was fresh fruit and bottled water in the room (which was a nice surprise after our long trip!). We had lots of events in the city but the Lyft fare was only about $6. We felt comfortable and safe as though we were staying with a relative.
We're a half mile from Shelby Park, which includes wetlands and nature trails, greenway for biking, hiking, running and rollerblading. Downtown has the iconic Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, honky-tonks on Lower Broad, world class Frist Museum of Fine Art, and the legendary Ryman Auditorium.
