About the property

Beautiful & Very Private 'eco-luxury' Retreat. Ocean, Mountain & Jungle Views

Pura Vida Ecolodge is a unique 'eco-luxury' retreat nestled amongst virgin rain forest just 5 km from the volcanic sands of the Pacific Ocean in Central America's Costa Rica. The ecolodge has been awarded with a 'Certificate of Excellence' for the last 2 years & was designed by award winning Architect Franco Casalvolone (FCB Arquitectura).. This is the ‘real’ Costa Rica as our beautiful & breezy location, at an altitude of just over 300 meters & with over 3 acres of private land, boasts stunning panoramic sea views over the lush valleys towards the meandering 'Rio Terraba' and directly faces the Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica's spectacular sunsets and the world famous National Parks - Isla del Caño & Osa Peninsula. The most magical times are the early mornings and late afternoons where you can sit back with a freshly made juice or a glass of wine and be a spectator of nature with monkeys, parrots and toucans all frequently visiting the lodge and it’s surrounding reserve.

Pura Vida Ecolodge is a peaceful sanctuary to experience and embrace 'Pura Vida' (Pure Life). A destination where guests can enjoy not only a memorable holiday, but tranquility, adventure and equilibrium in a utopia second to none. PURA VIDA ECOLODGE FAQs:

WILL I NEED A 4x4 CAR? Yes, our retreat is situated 5km from the coast and the village of Coronado on a well maintained gravel road into the coastal mountains. A 4WD car is necessary.

IS THERE SOMEONE IN COSTA RICA WHO CAN ASSIST ME WHILE I AM THERE?

Yes, once you book Pura Vida Ecolodge, you will be sent the welcome pack which includes all the details of our housekeeper and his wife, who double up as a 'concierge service' throughout your stay. They are very knowledgeable on the area and will be there at checkin & checkout and can help you throughout your stay with anything you might need.

IS THERE A BEACH NEARBY THAT IS EASY TO GET TO? Yes, in fact you are really quite spoilt for choice. Playa Tortuga is the nearest and possibly one of our favourites. Once down at the Costa Nera, it is just a 5 minute drive up the coast. A short drive further up the coast takes you to Playa Piñuelas, Playa Ventanas and then the stunning national park of Marina Ballena and Uvita.

HOW EASY IS IT TO FIND PURA VIDA ECOLODGE? Upon confirming your reservation, we send all our guests a welcome pack with very clear directions including photos of landmarks along the way.

ARE THERE RESTAURANTS AND SHOPPING NEARBY?

Ojochal is the nearest town with a really good selection of fine & casual dining. You can find Fusion, Italian, Asian, “Typical Costa Rican,” even a deli/bakery and a handful of great fruit smoothie and ceviche places. Further up the coast there is Uvita, again with a good balance of International and 'local' options..

ARE THERE EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES CLOSE BY? Yes, yes, yes! Again, you can find more details on the Pura Vida Ecolodge web site, but there are spectacular waterfalls, nature trails and plunge pools right in the reserve itself. The surrounding area offers world class scuba diving, snorkeling, zip-lining, boat tours, mangrove tours, hiking, stand-up paddling, horseback tours, canyoning, as well as being located between the country's best national parks (Corcovado & Manuel Antonio) and a 20 minute drive from Marina Ballena National Park. There are dozens of picturesque, quiet beaches all the way up and down the Southern Pacific coast, with enough activities and adventures on offer to do something completely different every day! We can also recommend great day trips to the Osa Peninsula, Sierpe and Nuayaca Falls amongst others and an overnight option to Mt Chirripo is incredible if you have the time. For surfers, Playa Dominical has a famous left and right beach surf break, and waves 95% of the year. Closer to the lodge, Playa Tortuga and Ventanas often have good waves more for beginners or if you’re after an almost private beach and wildlife experience, you can have breakfast or lunch at La Cusinga and then explore the different monkey colonies. if you’re lucky you might spot some Red Scarlet Macaws and guests also regularly see lots of toucans and different types of parrots. The 10-min walk through the jungle down to Playa Arco is well worth the trek!

IS IT A QUIET NEIGHBORHOOD? Yes, Pura Vida Ecolodge is the best of both worlds. While being a completely private retreat and reserve (both the house, pool and the surrounding nature trails) with it's orientation meaning that the property literally hangs over the jungle canopy on one side and directly faces the Pacific coast on the other, you will have a handful of neighbours nearby in the slowly growing community if you wanted a friendly chat or even some more tips on the area.

IS THERE A GROCERY STORE NEARBY? Between the two 'pulperias' (small local stores) on the crossroads at Coronado (around 5km away) you will have almost everything you would need. There is also a great fish/seafood place just 1 km from the Coronado junction. For larger shopping, there are two big supermarkets in Uvita, about 15 minutes up the coast

DOES THE ECOLODGE HAVE INTERNET? Yes, the house is equipped with WiFi for internet connection

WHICH ROOMS HAVE AIR CONDITIONING?

Both bedrooms have A/C. There is not A/C throughout the rest of the home, but there are ceiling fans in each room and the Ecolodge has been designed with your comfort in mind, with large-open plan living spaces, surrounded by sliding doors leading out onto the wrap around decks which mean there are lovely fresh sea-breezes throughout.

About Joe Lasky

My wife & I have been visiting Costa Rica for years & bought this little piece of paradise around 8 years ago. We spent the next few years dreaming about, conceptualising & designing Pura Vida Ecolodge (& a lot of time saving!) I then moved over to Costa Rica for 9 months in 2012 & sourced the right architects, engineers & construction team that I thought was right for making our dream a reality - and what an experience it was!!

The main 'House Rules' so to speak are to adopt the 'Pura Vida Ecolodge' philosophy & concept we have worked so hard to create. That means respecting nature, the animals and the magical surroundings of the Jungle Villa and it's reserve. Please remember that given the unique location, you will inevitably have some visitors from the surrounding rain forest during your stay. Whether that be congo monkeys as the sun rises, early morning visits from the the incredibly tame 'pizotes', toucans as the sunsets or even the odd bull-frog having a splash in the pool! Our main goal, as designers, hoteliers and 'conceptualists' is that you are able to leave the 'urban madness' behind and fully enjoy & embrace a unique life up at Pura Vida Ecolodge throughout your stay, whether it be just two days or two weeks, always conscious that our Jungle Villa really is 'A Retreat - A Lifestyle & An Experience.' We ask guests to read the welcome packs & guidebook thoroughly before arriving to Costa Rica so you can fully enjoy your Pura Vida Experience.

Joe Lasky purchased this villa in 2012

Why Joe Lasky chose Tres Rios

Right from the beginning, when we were scouting out the perfect location and developing the concept we always had our backbone philosophy clear. We wanted Pura Vida Ecolodge to be a retreat, a lifestyle and a real experience for our guests.

Having traveled the world extensively, we realized it was time to create something special, luxurious (yet affordable) that cares just as much about the environment as they do about their guests. The Zona Sur of Costa Rica provided us with the platform to make it possible to travel in style without feeling guilty.

At Pura Vida Ecolodge guests soon find out that organic is just as important as stylish, and as Costa Rican government plans to make it the world’s first carbon-neutral country by 2021 we wanted to follow suit. We realized that guests are looking for something new & unique, ready to leave the brashness & bling of hotels behind, only to find a more personal, natural & understated approach – and everyone benefits.

Our goal is to provide guests with an exclusive ocean view private retreat, located amongst a tropical jungle environment. Everything has been designed & created to harmonize our facilities with the surrounding natural beauty the Pura Vida Ecolodge reserve has to offer. Dawn is greeted by sounds of playful howler monkeys, toucans, parakeets & many more potential visitors to the Jungle vacation villa. All this only minutes from the charming villages of Ojochal & Coronado and some of the most pristine beaches in the world.

The lodge has been designed to have a minimum impact on the environment & aims to really 'fit in' with the lush surroundings. Please take into consideration that it is located right above the jungle canopy & while we have tried to design the lodge to be as sheltered & sealed as possible from the surrounding elements, please remember it’s impossible to safeguard 100% against having the occasional visitor from the jungle. That said, if you follow the welcome pack tips, you should be fine.

What makes this villa unique

Our mission at Pura Vida Ecolodge is to offer a unique 'Pura Vida' experience with a particular emphasis on 'eco-luxury' based on principles of quality, space, nature, sustainability & pure relaxation. The combo of the Jungle Villa’s airy open-plan design, its unique location hanging over the jungle canopy, its private nature reserve and the extensive amenities available enable our guests to fully unwind and let go, enjoying whatever level of privacy & independence they wish for whilst taking advantage of our knowledgable housekeeper and his local expertise.

Our vision is to distinguish ourselves as a 'nature experience' with a touch of 'eco-luxury' in the field of hospitality and eco-tourism. We aim for a strong sustainable culture with values orientated to guests who search for peace & tranquillity within nature.

The Jungle Villa itself has capacity to sleep up to 6 guests and is the perfect getaway, your chance to leave the urban jungle behind and stay right on top of a real one! With the close proximity to the Pacific Coast, Costa Rica's world famous National Parks, a selection of cloud forests and stunning active volcanoes, Pura Vida Ecolodge appeals to anyone that enjoys the outdoor living! Nature enthusiasts, adrenalin junkies, sport fishers, scuba divers, surfers and of course newlyweds looking for the perfect honeymoon destination.

Friendly disclaimer: We'd like to remind guests that being 'off the beaten track' in this hidden corner of Costa Rica does mean that from time to time we can experience a variability of Pura Vida Ecolodge's infrastructure (such as internet, water pressure & power cuts). While largely unavoidable when they do happen, they are generally short-lived, pretty infrequent & shouldn't manage to interfere with your holiday providing you remember where you are, the ecolodge adventure you've chosen to experience & that things will not necessarily be quite the same as perhaps you are used to 'back home'.

Notes:
House Rules: KITCHEN: Please don't leave any food out as bugs & ants will prey on it! Cleaning up after each meal (including the floors) will help you keep them off. Please keep all foods in fridge or covered, especially overnight. All organic waste (except fish & meat) can be thrown over the balcony (towards the jungle – but NOT in the garden behind the house). It’s great natural fertilizer for papaya trees! Please refrain from putting anything wet or hot on the wood, use table mats instead. Please use the chopping boards instead of the polished concrete finishes. LOUNGE - Sliding doors of open-plan lounge have been designed to bring a little bit of the glory of nature inside the ecolodge. During the day it’s perfectly fine to keep sliding door & screens open. However at night with the lights on everything needs to be shut otherwise the lights will attract the insects! BEDROOMS - Suites are well sealed meaning AC will function effectively as long as windows, doors are 100% closed

We loved our stay at Pura Vida Ecolodge. Perfect accommodations for our two couples.

Excellent pre-visit packages with lots of information about the property and the surrounding area. We hiked the "hundreds of white steps" trail and it turned out to be 614 steps-give or take-each way. Gersan and Illiana were fabulous! The road is a challenge so believe Joe when he says you need 4WD!

Pura Vida

This place is amazing. We had such a great time there. The house itself is an architectural gem. Its location is stunning. The view of the mountains, valleys, sky, clouds, and ocean is never failing but ever changing beauty. I couldn't sleep in the morning, partly because sunrise came early, but mostly because I didn't want to miss the view from the bedroom window. Gersan served well as our on-site host. We really appreciated the dinner prepared and served by Gersan and Ilya the day of our arrival. The boat ride with Gersan to his private beach was a real treat, and we were totally blown away when he served us a hot lunch on the beach. The papers that Joe & Kika lovingly prepared are above and beyond anything I have ever seen from an airbnb host and added immeasurably to our experience. This was our first visit to Costa Rica; it will not be our last. I hope to visit Pura Vida Ecolodge again.

Oh my, I don't even know where to begin! It's not the easiest place to get to but that's not negative at all-it's part of the magic! Our first thought was "someone put their heart and and soul into building this place!" It just has that special quality to it. The groundskeeper Gershan is a lovely young man and greeted us upon arrival. He showed us how to navigate the nuances of the home. We loved opening all the doors and letting the sounds of the jungle in. We had planned day excursions but decide we had to stay one full day and just relax and soak in what this property has to offer. Quick note on the amenities and service. The communication from the owners is amazing. I would advise thoroughly reading the welcome packets they send before you get there and again, once you arrive because EVERYTHING you need to know is there. Also, the beds... To die for! I am looking into buying the CocoMats for home. Best nights sleep ever! I would recommend this to anyone who would like to relax, have a romantic getaway, honeymoon... It's perfect for shutting down and taking in the pure life! We hope that return someday for sure!

A paradise on earth

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed in this one-of-a-kind ecolodge for 9 days in February 2016. We rented a 4x4 (which indeed was very helpful) in Uvita Alamo Car Rentals. Joe, the owner, had sent us beforehand detailed information how to get to the house and there waited already Gersan, the local caretaker, and showed us around. What a place! Modern and stylish rooms and interieur, spacious and breezy. From the decks you are almost in the midst of a dense, green jungle (at least very close!) with its vibrant life and all the exotic sounds of nature. What else was remarkable for us: comfortable, large bed, fully equipped kitchen, nice and warm shower and last but by no means least, the cosy little pool. Especially on hot afternoons it was our delight to cool down and look / listen to many birds around.

An absolute must is a half day boat tour with Gersan. In his boat he guided us through a tangle of channels, through a maze of mangrove forests, part of the huge Terraba River estuary.

It's really difficult to put together a brief description of this fabulous Ecolodge up on the rolling hills of Tres Rios but we have tremendously enjoyed our stay and can recommend Pura Vida Ecolodge thoroughly.

Not for everyone

  • 2 of 5

+ amazing view from the property

+ nice bath robes

+ howler monkeys

+ essential oil diffuser

+ Gerson is truly everything everyone else says about him - amazing!

This is truly the jungle! To stay here you must essentially be willing to stay outside with all the animals in Costa Rica! Why? The house is setup in a way that in order to enjoy the views or anything outside you must have the doors wide open and there are no screens. There were lots of bugs in the house upon arrival. Several different kinds that I couldn't even tell you what kind. When you spend a lot of money and you dream of staying somewhere for months you want to love it! We decided to close all of the doors and sit outside of the house to try and make it work and enjoy. We thought that spraying bug spray would get rid of the bugs... Well, it made them all come out from hiding. It was so bad that you couldn't go from one room to another without looking around everywhere. We booked for 10 days and ended staying 6. What took the cake was spraying on the sixth day. We pulled the bed out from the wall because the night before we had bugs fall on the bed and assumed it was because they were attracted to the lights in the room. We sprayed again and came back to find cockroaches in the bed and finally a spider in the kitchen the size of your hand. We packed up and left. We were willing to go to a resort that charged 800 a night to get out of this place. Cheaper options were sold out. We called the owner, we never asked for our money back but he didn't really care. He essentially told us it was our fault and if it was that bad why did we stay 6 nights. We also waited a few weeks after stay and had to ask for our deposit back before he sent it.

Additional negatives

- The house was dirty. Not clean to our standards. Someone else's toenails in the living room rug. And I don't care what this man responds and says the walls are filthy! He will try to say it's the wall type, please trust me it isn't.

- The infinity pool is in the back of the house and there is no view because it's blocked by trees.

- didn't matter to us but would for some, the bedrooms are on different levels, not a place for kids.

- the owner has a limit on the Internet. It would work each day for a little while and stop working. At first we thought something was wrong but realized what was really going on after a couple days.

- 20 minute uphill on rocky road to house.

2 star for architecture of house and view!

Owner's Response: We feel L’s review is unfair & q.inaccurate. It seems only right that guests have all the FACTS & aren’t misled by exaggerated or misinformed comments. Listing details & photos explain lodge's design, location & proximity to jungle & the 'visitors' that can OCCASIONALLY come in all shapes & sizes. We can’t say YES to the monkeys & toucans & NO to bullfrogs & spiders Seemed strange to not receive any mention of things that provoked early checkout given we’d been in regular contact throughout stay. Then suddenly, without giving my team a chance to help, they thought that it warranted hasty & early check-out. My commenting so, definitely didn’t mean that we don't care or that we think it was their 'fault' as review sadly contrives - Just trying to understand haste of departure & lack of communication beforehand. We really do care about all our guests Lodge carefully designed to offer guests exact opposite of what L suggests. Rather than sealing main open-plan living area with glass, bamboo 'screen' doors allow guests to enjoy surroundings & accompanying sounds of jungle from the comfort of lodge. Design feature has been v.popular from what previous guests have said. Bedrooms however have purposefully been 100% sealed but both have large windows with views. Immediately after L’s checkout, housekeepers searched for giant spiders but didn't find anything. While it would be wrong of us to doubt what L saw or experienced, it does indicate that just as creatures can find a way into lodge they can find way out just as easily. Lodge has been fully occupied since L left, with no-one mentioning spiders or cockroaches. VRBO take 10 days to return deposits. When L mentioned delay, I got in touch with VRBO who immediately resolved situation, definitely not our fault. We have same cleaning stds in place since we opened. Housekeeper has been extensively 'trained' to prepare lodge to high std & is generally commended for his efforts as lodge is normally spotless. I painted Ocean Suite walls myself, so at the very worst it's not v.good paint job! It’s a characteristic of the stucco, specks & pigment stains are part of the finish. Saying that walls are 'filthy' isn’t true. Bedrooms are on different levels but to black mark us as 'not suitable for kids' is unfair & inaccurate, alot of our guests are families with kids, this has never been seen as a problem before. We pay monthly Internet without any limit. But given location, Internet can occasionally be slow

At the same time as being near local beaches, restaurants and other tourist attractions, Pura Vida Ecolodge's location is both remote and private and the retreat itself will provide you with all sorts of adventures and experiences. We have our own nature trails, waterfalls & natural plunge pools both near the ecolodge & on the edge of the Pura Vida Ecolodge Reserve - the easiest trail starts right by the ecolodge, with more challenging treks on the edge of the reserve just a short up-hill walk (300m) from the lodge. Your adventure can be as extreme or relaxing as you choose with a plethora of natural swimming pools, waterfalls and rock faces to explore! Whether you are honeymooners, a group of friends or a family of 6, you will have the entire ecolodge just to yourselves. We have also planted lots of trees, so please be our guests and pick any of the fruits they are all obviously 100% organic! If you venture off any of the paths, take your boots and maybe a hiking pole.

*NEW - You'll also love our new yoga deck, exercise and body weights area (with pull up & dip bars etc) complete with outdoor rain shower and a 'chill out area', again hanging dramatically on the edge of our nature reserve - so you can enjoy the lodge's valley, ocean and sunset views whether working out or just relaxing.

The main 'House Rules' are to adopt the 'Pura Vida Ecolodge' philosophy & concept we have worked so hard to create. Our main goal, as designers, hoteliers and 'conceptualists' is that you are able to leave the 'urban madness' behind and fully enjoy & embrace a unique life up at Pura Vida Ecolodge throughout your stay, whether it be just two days or two weeks, always conscious that our Jungle Villa really is 'A Retreat - A Lifestyle & An Experience.'

We do ask that guests read the welcome packs & guidebook thoroughly before arriving in Costa Rica so you can fully enjoy your Pura Vida Experience and be prepared for what the Pura Vida Adventure is all about.

FRIENDLY DISCLAIMER: We'd like to take this opportunity to remind guests that being 'off the beaten track' in this hidden corner of Costa Rica does mean that from time to time we can experience a variability of Pura Vida Ecolodge's infrastructure (such as internet connection, water pressure and power cuts for example). While largely unavoidable when they do happen, they are generally short-lived, pretty infrequent and shouldn't manage to interfere with your holiday providing you remember where you are, the ecolodge adventure you've chosen to experience and that things will not necessarily be quite the same as perhaps you are used to 'back home'. That said, our housekeeper is always just around the corner and we always have a 'plan B' up our sleeve should the need arise to ensure your trip is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
