Private driveway and entrance leads to your Gorge Getaway vacation spot. View of surrounding mountains with western gorge in the distance. All the amenities of home, but better location. Kite, bike, paddle, hike, eat, drink - we have it good here.
Bright, airy and huge daylight basement apartment (850 square feet!) - this space is part of our larger family home. Central air with radiant floor heat. Private patio with BBQ, sitting area and access to large yard. Television, wifi access, DVD player and a Wii. (Yes, a Wii!!!)
Space has 2 beds - one is a queen sized bed in the bedroom and the other is a sofa pullout (super comfy) in the living room that is almost the size of a queen.
As a guest, you will have private access to the space (2 options of doors), and have access to everything except for a storage closet and the utility room on this floor. Guests also have access to private deck (we may be passing through side yard to pick tomatoes from the garden and we may even give you some if you're around).
Our family lives upstairs and should be available for the most part during your visit. We like our privacy and will respect yours as well. However, we're friendly enough (the kids are too old for biting, or so they say), that if you would like input on local information or need directions or just a good old fashioned chat, don't hesitate to let us know.
We are a family upstairs - and we love that you'll be vacationing in part of our home. Please realize that we probably won't be on vacation the same time as you are (maybe next time though!) - so we need to have quiet time start at 10pm, and please no super loud happenings before 7am.
Also, smoking is bad for you. You really, just shouldn't. Your mom did not make me say this - but I bet she would agree. If you feel you must - the yard is the best place. Please not the patio as it will waft up into our space. Anywhere on the grass is fine. Please don't leave your butts behind.
Due to the aforementioned cat, we can't have other pets on the property. It would probably upset him. We've seen that. You haven't. You probably don't want to see it. Trust us.
We live in a super quiet neighborhood within a mile of downtown White Salmon that allows you to refresh and recharge yourself after a busy day on the water or on the trails. We face south-west and therefore have brighter days than our poor neighbors in Hood River. (We know they are jealous.)
Just feet from the property is our local Loop Trail that is great for a bike ride and for running. We have blackberry patches in the neighborhood that are super handy (and yummy) in the summer time.
Just down the road (walking distance if you like a good stretch of the legs) we have Henni's, Everybody's Brewing and Pioneer Pizza. Get in the car and head down the hill to our neighbor Bingen for some great Chicago style pizza at Beneventi's. Several places to get coffee. Lots of places to try local wines and beer. We have 2 markets - Harvest Market (decent size and good variety that you'd find in all of your larger city chain markets) and FEAST - local organic style market and deli.
Please note too that we have placed some things in the space that are local and thought you would enjoy.
On the counter, we have coffee from our friends at STOKED Roasters (located in Hood River). Really good stuff. Let us know if you want to get some to take home with you, and we can arrange to have a bag delivered.
On the walls (some not all), You’ll see artwork from our friend, Barbara Murphy. All of her work is for sale, and she has quite a bit in several spots around the gorge. She is also open to commissioned painting if there is a certain scene or vista that you would like to take back home with you.
Those great potted mugs for your coffee? Those are from our friends at Klickitat Pottery. We’d prefer for you not to take these mugs, but if you are looking for a couple to take home with you, we can help make that happen.
We have made the Columbia River Gorge our home since 1993. We love to travel, but also love coming back to this incredibly beautiful spot that we are lucky enough to call home.
Breff McLaughlin purchased this apartment in 2007
We designed and built this house ourselves. The space that we are sharing with people like you was designed lovingly for extended family stays. We even lived in the space while we were finishing to build the rest of the house. We love the views, the light and the quiet of the property.
Breff is one of the unique owners that goes out of his way to make you feel welcome and accommodates your requests. The apartment was as advertised; clean, well appointed with many amenities. We were very happy with our stay and we will return and recommend it to our friends.
The downstairs apartment of a family home in White Salmon is nicely decorated and well appointed. The owner was there to greet us and was quick to respond to our needs throughout our stay. It would be nice if there was a dishwasher, but that's nit picking. The apartment was clean but a few too many dust bunnies and spider webs for my complete satisfaction. As previously noted by Bert: "There is noise that can be heard from the upstairs home, voices, TV, and walking on the floors. This wasn't much of a problem but it made the home not feel like it was fully ours." The entertainment system can be a little intimidating for some (several remotes and key strokes). The WiFi was high speed (nice).
We stayed a week in early October 2015. The location was great for us (two 'ol geezers in retirement), close to our kids who live down the hill in Bingen. We had them over several nights for dinner; they also liked the apartment.
We would recommend this apartment and stay again.
We stayed two nights in this lovely basement apartment. We had everything we needed. The bed was super comfortable and the space was open and clean. The owner was out for the weekend and had a guest staying in the upstairs home. The guest was a smoker and the smell permeated out space. I emailed the owner who apparently addressed this issue because the second night was much better. There is a lot of noise that can be heard from the upstairs home, voices, TV, and walking on the floors. This wasn't much of a problem but it made the home not feel like it was fully ours. The location of this property is lovely. No direct views of the gorge but the sun went down perfectly to fill the back yard with a beautiful sunset. Easy access, by car, to great restaurants in White Salmon and Hood River. The host was very warm and apologetic about the smoking guest. Would consider this place again.
This house was great for our family vacation. The spacious walk-in closet housed both kids at night -- could easily have handled a few more sleeping bags - it's HUGE. The A/C was a great perk after returning from the beach/hike on a hot day. The patio + hammock were used daily, as were the Wii and Direct TV :)
The owners provided delicious local coffee which we enjoyed on the patio as well. So close to White Salmon downtown and only a few minutes over the bridge to Hood River. We'll definitely recommend this house to friends and likely stay again!
This is the mighty Columbia River Gorge. Outdoor adventurers paradise. Between the mountains, and the rivers, there isn't much you can't do, and none of it is more than a stones throw away. White Salmon is a charming village with great restaurants and amazing views of Mt. Hood and the Hood River Valley.
