My wife and I have been renting out our holiday properties in Brixham for 20 years.
Mr Peter Gribbin purchased this bungalow in 1995
Newlands is an attractive and private detached bungalow in a beautiful harbour setting yet very close to shops, bars and restaurants. It is newly modernised and has a new kitchen, a new bathroom, timber flooring and free WiFi.
The sunny rear garden has 2 patios with sea views. Newlands has driveway parking for 2 vehicles which is rare for a Brixham harbour property.
This was our first visit to Newlands and will not be the last. The bungalow is warm, cosy and very well equipped. Great to have private parking. Being away from the town centre it was nice and quiet at night. It is only a 5-7 minute walk to the town with gently sloping roads and 50 (yes, I counted them) steps to reach the harbour. (Last year the property we were in had 139 steps). The garden and patio areas are a real bonus. I can highly recommend this property.
We've stayed at Newlands several times in the last few years, it's a very comfortable small bungalow just 5 minutes from both the harbour & marina with the added benefit of off road parking. Overall, in out opinion, an excellent holiday rental in a great location.
Since our last visit the owners have made several improvements of note to the property, the main ones being:
1) Wooden floors to the lounge, bedrooms and hall. Not only do these make the property more stylish and contemporary, they are more practical and hygenic when pets are allowed.
2) Wifi has been installed, but not just any old wifi, a really fast one that allows viewing of TV programmes such as live footy matches using sky or bt if you are a subscriber or BBC/ITV using their player so you can watch 2 different programmes at the same time and avoid any conflicts. Previously I managed to get connected via a BT Fon which was OK for emails/web browsing but this is much better and also saves around £15 a week getting connected.
3) The garden has been opened up by removing a large shed and a couple of old trees & providing 2 patios which will be beneficial in the better weather, when it arrives. A bit of a "work in progress" on this visit but looking forward to dining and enjoying a "snifter" outside on our next visit in September. A huge improvement in the outside space, just hope the owners remember to provide a BBQ for guests!
Congratulations to the owners, a very good property made even better.
A beautifully furnished 2 bed bungalow in a quiet cul-de-sac, with off road parking. All mod cons and, due to the weather, superb heating.
Convenient for the town, the Coastal Path and public transport.
A thoroughly relaxing time in a wonderful environment, we wanted to stay longer.
We will definitely stay there again.
I thoroughly recommend Newlands to anyone wanting a completely stress free break by the sea.
I have booked Newlands bungalow twice now, and would be happy to recommend it to a friend.
It is situated in a quite cul-de-sac within a few minutes walking distance of Brixham Harbour and town, and is very clean and cosy with nice decor.
The dining table is situated in the bay window which overlooks the sea and provides the perfect backdrop whilst eating a meal.
It is very comfortable - two comfortable leather two seater sofas and comfortable beds to make it feel like home from home. If you stay in low season, there is central heating and also a nice electric fireplace with cosy glow effect, in the living room. In the living room and the bedrooms, there are table lamps for cosy lighting if you prefer it.
The kitchen is very well equipped - there was nothing I needed that was missing!
Sheets and towels were provided which was nice, as I didn't need to pack any extras.
There is a small garden with table and chairs and an added bonus is the off-road parking, with enough space for two cars, which I find is very important when staying in Brixham.
The owner is very accomodating and helpful.
I can't think of anything that has been overlooked with regard to making your stay as comfortable and as pleasant as possible. I would say it is an ideal holiday rental!
This is our second stay at Newlands and it is an ideal base for exploration of this beatuiful part of Devon.
The property itself is very clean and of a good size, it has a large front sea facing lounge with a big bay window where sits a table for 4 people, there are 2 largish leather 2 seater sofas and plenty of tables and cupboards.
Bedroom 1 is a the back of the property overlooking a medium sized level garden and has a double bed and nice pine furniture.
Bedroom 2 is at the front again with a sea view and with twin beds, again pine furniture for your clothes storage.
There is a decent sized bathroom with bath and a mira shower over which is pretty powerful. The toilet is next door but is separate, no bad thing really.
The well sized kitchen is at the back of the property with nice modern units with an electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer and for this year a great new addition a dishwasher (what a godsend).
We bring our dog with us and she loves the garden as do we, it's great to sit out in on a sunny evening.
The town of Brixham with all its restaurants etc is only a 10 minute stroll away on mainly flat ground so is very handy for all types of visitor.
We love Newlands it is ideal for us and we shall be booking again for next year.
A well-equipped, clean and comfortable property in a wonderfully quiet location (apart from seagulls!) with a very helpful owner. It's only a bungalow (which may appeal to less able-bodies people or those with very young children) but with good-sized rooms and all expected mod cons (dishwasher, washing machine, DVD, etc). Heating is modern and effective. Everything seemed clean and in good condition and the owner obviously takes real care in the property. The sea view from the living room window makes a great start or end to the day.
From the bungalow it is a short but steep walk down to Brixham centre with reasonable amenities and a picturesque harbour. The nearest decent beach is (so far as I can tell) a few miles away so a car is strongly recommended, though especially in the summer there is a decent bus service from Brixham to other areas. The English Riviera attractions (Paignton Zoo, Torquay, etc, etc) are all within 10 - 15 miles, and there are plenty of other things further afield as well. You can even catch a ferry from Brixham to Torquay.
Any negatives? Very few, really:
- There's only one bathroom, which is fair for the size of property but might be an issue with a group that likes to spend a long time in the shower in the morning.
- The garden, while pleasant, is not especially big so not ideal for very active children who like to run around a lot.
- Brixham itself is charming but not very lively, so families with teenagers would probably be better off in Torquay itself. And you need to drive through the (very narrow) centre of Brixham to get almost anywhere from the property, which is fine out of season but could get busy at the height of summer
Overall, though, a great holiday.
Places we enjoyed visiting:
- Paignton Zoo
- Babbacombe Model Village
- Broadsands Beach
- "The Brixham Fish Restaurant"
Enjoy short strolls around beautiful Brixham harbour to character pubs, restaurants and cafes selling the catch of the day. Walk along the spectacular coastal path or experience the beauty of Dartmoor, then relax at a traditional Devon pub. Agatha Christie buffs can explore her former house and gardens at Greenway or step into an episode of Poirot on the Paignton/Dartmouth Steam Railway. Sailors can enjoy boat trips from Brixham to either Torquay or the historic town of Dartmouth or cruise up the Dart estuary to the Elizabethan market town of Totnes.Enjoy the local free open air pool, the spectacular Quaywest waterpark,Paignton Zoo and Churston Golf Club. All tastes and ages are catered for and the scope for a brilliant holiday is almost endless.
