This house was built in 1963 by Paul Banks to bring his family off their Skyline homestead to be closer to town for school. Paul purchased the land from the original homesteader, James Waddell. Paul was the custodian at the elementary school at the bottom of East Hill Road. I purchased the property from the Banks and have facilitated a great many changes over the years. This constitutes history in Alaska!
We have renovated this old home to retain its original charms, but also to satisfy our modern tastes and expectations. We took the phone book off its string and nail where it originally hung on the wall next to the old phone. We painted and painted and painted. The result is quaint, bright, and utterly charming with enchanting views of Kachemak Bay, the Kenai Mountains and the Homer Spit.
We kept the original kitchen cabinets but painted them and added a modern color scheme. It is a fairly large kitchen meant for a family; comfortable for family and friends to gather in to cook and enjoy the bounty found in Kachemak Bay.
The three bedrooms are small but well appointed with especially comfortable Serta queen size mattresses (covered with allergy proof covers), down pillows (also with allergy proof covers), 550 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, reading lamps, and power strip for charging devices. The decor is a combination of vintage and current - or perhaps current fashion is a touch vintage? Located at the back of the house, the bedrooms have light filtered through the green foliage and absorb the quiet the trees offer.
The bathroom is spacious with a freshened "60s" decor. The tub is great for a relaxing soak, with plenty of large luscious towels to dry yourself off.
Every window at the front of the house - living room, kitchen, and laundry (!) offer the remarkable views we love so much in Homer.
I was born and raised in Homer, my husband, Kit is from Scotland. While I have never moved away from Homer, I have done considerable travel. Kit and I have chosen (in my case re-chosen) Homer from our own love of hiking, fishing, camping, and boating.
We work in Bush Alaska during the school year, I am a high school English teacher, Kit has worked as a VPSO (Village Public Safety Officer), alcohol distribution agent, and school bus driver to his current job with Maintenance & Operations. We have lived in St. Mary's on the Yukon Delta and are currently in Wainwright (80 miles from Barrow).
Kit & Phyllis Barnett purchased this apartment in 1987
It was the views of Kachemak Bay and the snow capped mountains, the abundant natural light, the close proximity to town and the feeling of home I got from the house. I know the Banks' family that build the house, and it felt so right for me and my son. Then, when Kit joined me in this life adventure, he brought his own skills to bear on the property. It has been his carpentry skill that remodeled this house and his love of gardening that has transformed the grounds (always evolving!).
It is the flower gardens are what will catch you eye as you drive up the driveway. The showy Sitka Roses cover the bushes in July. Wild blue geraniums, Alaskan irises, blooming abundantly are accented by the vibrant Oriental poppy. Delphinium and pansies (the Great Dane and the Chihuahua of the garden) mingle and vie for attention. It is all a glorious blast of color in our short summer. Most of these beauties were on the property others have been given to us by friends and family (the Columbine and Chives came from my mother).
Then, when you turn around to look out at the view . . . the light peaking through the clouds to play on the calm morning waters of Kachemak Bay or the evening light bathing the mountains in shades of pink. Every time of day has it's own charms. Cloudy days create moods with the light and dark alternating over the water. Breath taking, exhilarating, calming and serene, on different days at different times.
We plant a small vegetable garden on the property which we gladly make available to our guests. If you are eating in, make use of the kale, swiss chard, arrugula, a variety of lettuces, and this year a new addition, asian greens - they are beautiful! Pick lower leaves first and the plants will continue to provide all summer. Later in the fall there will be a few potatoes. Just help yourself, you can't miss it as we have tied orange surveyors tape "ribbons" all around hoping to keep the moose out.
Such a lovely home!! Great location, very open and beautiful view. Everything we needed and Phyllis could not have been nicer or more helpful. Me and two of my girlfriends stayed here for two nights and we would definitely come stay again.
We loved staying here. It was clean, spacious and had beautiful views. Would recommend.
We were smitten by this historic home from the moment we walked over the threshold. It is a immaculately kept three bedroom, one bath home with a sizable kitchen and views of the mountains from the living room windows. The landscape is also thoughtfully maintained and as a nice touch, cut flowers were in the kitchen upon our arrival. The queen bed was comfortable and all the bedrooms were well appointed. There were plenty of towels and racks for drying. The home could comfortably accommodate six people. As a bonus, the house was built and owned by the Paul Banks family who the owner personally knew and thereby spent time in the home as a child. We recommend this VRBO wholeheartedly.
We loved Kit and Phyllis' place during our stay in Homer! The place was very clean, had plenty of space, communication with owners was very prompt, and overall was a perfect house for our stay. Wonderful view of Homer and Kachemak Bay as well on a nice day. I would definitely recommend to anyone considering!
Fishing Alaska with my two sons was always on "the list". After months of planning we made it. Everything in this beautiful home was as advertised! We could not have asked for a cleaner more comfortable place to stay. Everything you need is there, including a quiet nights sleep. We will be back, highly recommended.

The property was very well maintained both inside and out with a stunning view right out the living room window. We had all the amenities and kitchen supplies we needed and check in/out was a breeze. Was so stress free! Made that part of the trip so easy, would recommend to any and everyone
