It is the flower gardens are what will catch you eye as you drive up the driveway. The showy Sitka Roses cover the bushes in July. Wild blue geraniums, Alaskan irises, blooming abundantly are accented by the vibrant Oriental poppy. Delphinium and pansies (the Great Dane and the Chihuahua of the garden) mingle and vie for attention. It is all a glorious blast of color in our short summer. Most of these beauties were on the property when I purchased it, others have been given to us by friends and family (the Columbine and Chives came from my mother).
Then, when you turn around to look out at the view . . . the light peaking through the clouds to play on the calm morning waters of Kachemak Bay or the evening light bathing the mountains in shades of pink. Every time of day has its own charms. Cloudy days create moods with the light and dark alternating over the water. Breathtaking, exhilarating, calming and serene, on different days at different times.
We plant a small vegetable garden on the property which we gladly make available to our guests. If you are eating in, make use of the kale, swiss chard, arugula, a variety of lettuces, and this year a new addition, asian greens - they are beautiful! Pick lower leaves first and the plants will continue to provide all summer. Later in the fall there will be a few potatoes. Just help yourself.
