About the property

Harbour house on the north-eastern coast of Scotland, sleeps 12 people

Located along the North Coast 500, Keiss Harbour House is a stunning, contemporary-styled house on the edge of the Caithness village of Keiss, some 12 miles south of John O'Groats. The five bedrooms and spacious reception rooms make it ideal for entertaining groups of friends or family gatherings.

This area is ideal for those seeking an active holiday, with surfing and golf being local specialities, or for a more relaxing break, with sandy beaches, fishing and many historical and archaeological attractions in easy reach. This is also an ideal base for trips to the Orkney Islands, or boating and wildlife tours. Or why not just sit in an armchair in front of one of the three real fires, looking out over the sea?

The far northern highlands of Caithness are an unexplored gem of Scotland. There are fascinating archaeological remains and historic houses and museums to visit, surfing, golfing, walking, and easy access to the Orkney Islands. Whisky, gin and vodka distilleries are all within 10 minutes of the house. The stunning northern coast of Scotland and the north-western Highlands are also within easy reach.

Keiss Harbour House has five bedrooms and three reception areas, arranged over two floors.

The reception rooms in Keiss Harbour House are located upstairs, to take advantage of the sea views. The upstairs rooms comprise:

Spectacular 'Great Hall’ style living/dining room with handmade wooden table to seat up to 17 people, two seating areas with sofas and armchairs, with an open fire and a wood burning stove.

Breakfast room with open fire and small dining table and 4 chairs for more intimate meals - also an ideal games table.

Fully equipped kitchen with island seating where you will find extras such as a wine fridge, two refrigerators and a freezer, Nespresso coffee machine, slow cooker and a lobster pot. Shower room with toilet.

The Great Hall, kitchen and breakfast room all benefit from spectacular sea views.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are downstairs, accessed from a beautifully lit corridor: Three double bedrooms (two with balconies). One twin bedroom. Bunk room with two sets of bunks. Shower-room with steam room facility and toilet. Bathroom with hand-held shower and toilet. Laundry area with washing machine, iron and tumble drier.

The bedrooms and bathroom all benefit from spectacular sea views.

The house has the following facilities: free Wi-Fi. Two open fires and a stove. Steam room. TV with Freeview. Bose Sound Dock plus stereo with iPod dock. Games and jigsaws, novels and local reference books. Underfloor heating. Stair gate, cot, high chair, children's crockery, games and toys. Locked store for surfing gear, fishing equipment, etc. Logs and coal provided.

Keiss Harbour House forms part of the historic harbour in the village of Keiss. The house directly overlooks the harbour, which is still used by fishing boats. On sunny days, the harbour provides a delightful area for sitting outside, watching the boats come and go.

The Keiss village pub is five minutes walk away, where you will always receive a warm welcome (it's also the source of all local knowledge).

Just wish we could have stayed longer!

We rented this house to hold my husband and I, our five children and my husband's sister. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay. There was plenty of room for all of us and we really enjoyed relaxing in the large but cozy sitting room after being out all day sightseeing!

We could not have wished for a better stay and experience at the harbour house!

Myself and a group of friends stayed here last month and had an amazing weekend away! Such a stunning location wether you want to explore locally or further afield! The pictures don’t do the location justice and the interior decor was beautiful. Such a large space even being in a large group the rooms still felt spacious. We only had one issue with the water and it was solved extremely quickly and easily! The owner kept in contact and very friendly, approachable. We all agreed we’d definitely return here again and were very happy with our stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words Rebecca! We loved having you and are so glad you enjoyed the house and the beautiful Caithness coast. We're so sorry about the water - you always hope these things don't happen but you were really fantastic about it all and we greatly appreciate it! Would love to have you all back.

Fantastic house

What a great place to stay, great views, great surroundings, great accommodation, great ping pong :-) Stayed for a week and certainly did not want to leave, Sitting watching the sea through the many windows facing it whiled away the time in impressive fashion. Hoping to visit again. Many thanks Anna.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words, very much appreciated! I am so glad that you enjoyed staying at the house, and especially that you enjoyed sitting looking out of the windows - my favourite thing to do there. We would of course be delighted if you would ever like to go back. Many thanks again, Anna.

Whether you are on a family holiday, sporting break or get-together of friends, you will find plenty to do with easy access from the house.

The sandy links course of Wick Golf Club is five minutes drive away, as is the surfers mecca of Sinclair's Bay. There are further renowned surfing beaches, around Thurso and Strathy, within half an hours drive. Fishing on nearby rivers and lochs is available, or you can fish off the harbour wall!

The Queen Mother's house, the Castle of Mey, is a moving and interesting place to visit, within half an hour's drive. Heritage Museums in Wick and Thurso provide a fascinating insight into the history of Caithness, and numerous archaeological sites such as the Cairns of Camster and Yarrows Archaeological Trail show the ancient civilisation of the area.

A day trip to see the sights of Orkney is a must, with Orkney less than an hour away by ferry from Gills Bay or John o' Groats, both around 15 min drive from the house.
