Impressive first impressions a comfortable stay with a few negatives

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is beautiful and in a convenient and pretty location.

The first impressions are amazing, lovely garden, fully set dining table and cosy decor.

On the whole a lovely stay.

A few negatives in that the internet was very weak.

There were wet towels left in all of the rooms and some of the glass wear had wine stains in.

The hosts we're very welcoming and helpful when we were lost, however they do expect their guests to clean the cottage, bedding etc. Which i am more than happy to do however we felt maybe the clean prior to our stay was not of a high standard and we questioned why we're asked to do this as this is normally part of the cleaning staff's role.

Additionally lots provided (weighing scales etc) however a tasimo system but nothing to put into it and no toilet roll or tin foil.

A great place owned by genuine kind people let down by their cleaning staff and wifi and a few small details.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your positive comments with your review on Smithy House.Regarding some of the comments, The stained wine glass was put away by the previous guests but should have been spotted by the cleaner. Can we clarify that we do not expect any of our guests to clean the cottage/bedding etc. before they leave, this is all done by the cleaner. When guests arrive the beds are all made up however we do ask guests to leave the house in a clean and tidy state. Each toilet area had at least one tolet roll prior to guests arriving. Altough we provide instant tea and coffee we feel that guests need to bring their own capsules for the nespresso machine. Colin Smith

Stainton is ideally placed to enjoy the Northern Lake District and Eden Valley. It is only 10 minutes from the market town of Penrith with a wealth of shops, pubs, restaurants and famous open air Saturday market.

The area is ideal for walking, Helvellyn and Blencathra are only a short ride away. The tranquil lanes are ideal for cycling and Stainton is on the Coast to Coast route.

Stainton itself has a village inn and hotel only yards away with superb food, post office, small shop, farm shop and the Rheged Discovery Centre is minutes away.

Rheged has a multi plex cinema and sells local goods in its shopping complex.

Within yards of the house is the Alpaca centre. The market town of Keswick is 14 miles with its numerous climbing and walking shops as well as a range of restaurants and cafes.

Lake Ullswater, often described as the most romantic lake , is only three and a half miles from the house.
