About the property

3 Bedrooms, sleeps 6, 1 bathroom, 2nd WC, barn sized kitchen / living area

This artist's residence is shaded by huge palm trees in an enclosed garden. In the single storey house the thick stone walls and high beamed ceilings create a spacious interior that is cool in summer (log-burning stove for winter). French windows from 3 rooms open straight into the garden. There are 3 bedrooms : 2 with long double beds , one with 2 single beds. 2 Cots and highchair available.

Situated on the edge of the artistic town of Ceret, it is just 10 miles from Spain. You can escape from the world and sit by the pool, or in the deep shade of the mature palm trees. Nearby discover lovely riverside walks, or its only 12 minutes stroll into the cobbled street town centre, with its pavement cafes, galleries, and restaurants. The local patisserie, the butcher, the supermarket (open late) are three minutes walk, and provide for all immediate needs. A new restaurant has opened by the spectacular bridge, just 300 metres away.

Check flights to PERPIGNAN ( 30 mins), GIRONA (90mins), CARCASSONNE(90 mins) and BARCELONA ( 2 hrs) MONTPELLIER (2hrs)

Arrival days flexible, by arrangement.

Please make yourselves at home. There is a guest book in the house with ideas for places to visit. This location is perfect as a base for exploring Languedoc, whatever your interests. One of the bedrooms has a large selection of books, which guests are free to borrow whilst on holiday, or exchange for those they have just finished reading. We also leave tea , coffee, sugar, salt, pepper and spices in the house at all times. Help yourselves to rice, lentils, pasta : whatever is left behind for you. Guests are welcome to use these, but please replace anything that is finished, or leave behind something for the next visitors. Enjoy!

Skiiing is available at Font Romeu, up the next valley, about an hour and a half 's drive, or train from Perpignan. There are two ski lifts. There are other resorts further up the next valley : travel from Perpignan towards Andorra ( rail or car).

The sandy beaches of the Mediterranean are 30 mins drive away at Argeles, with all kinds of beach sports or long open spaces. Visit Port Vendres for the daily morning fish market, and stay for lunch.

There is a small stream of mountain water running through the garden, about 10 inches wide and never more than 3' inches deep. It is usually dry in summer. We have often had 2 year olds staying, and have a 3 year old grandchild who has often stayed. The garden is enclosed, and there is plenty of room to play.

About Clare Bywater

This house is shared jointly by me and my artist sister. She lives in Canada, and I live in Ireland. This is where we share time together. She paints, draws, and cooks with the wonderful local vegetables and fruit, and I read, swim, and meet friends in the pavement cafes. We both walk through the forests or up into the mountains. It is a very special place for us.

Clare Bywater purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Clare Bywater chose Céret

Everything you could need is available on the block, including small supermarket, butcher, and patisserie. Easy walking distance into this small town, and lovely evening walks from the house along the river where there is no traffic.

The huge palm trees offer unique shade on a hot summer's day, and the pool is just across the garden. Wonderful place to sit in the evening.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is single storey : there are no steps anywhere. The garden is safe, and enclosed by a lockable gate. The pool has a beautiful but impenetrable fence around it ( even by 2 year olds, and my very small grandson spent 2 weeks trying!), with a gate that is difficult for children to open, also lockable.

The enormous palm trees give wonderful shade in summer, and it is an easy garden to relax in, sit out in the evening and watch the bats, and listen to the bamboos rustling.

This is a single storey building which opens directly into a large garden. There is another small terrace at the rear of the house, which catches the early morning sun, but is cool and shady by the afternoon. There is a fence and lockable gate surrounding the pool. The garden contains huge shady palm trees, some exotic ferns, and some cacti, lilies and roses. There is also a narrow stream which flows through the garden, dry in summer. In the heat of summer the generous palm-tree shade is invaluable, but for the sun-worshippers there is a sunbathing terrace by the pool, with 2 sunloungers and a selection of garden chairs. there is a hammock under the palm trees. SKIING Nearest skiing ( 2 lifts) is in the next valley at Font Romeu. The house is not normally open at this time of year, but it could be made available on request.

A Hidden Gem

The hidden gem

One week in Ceret is not long enough and yet it is ample to really get to savour and enjoy this pretty much unknown corner of SW France.

The cottage is just out of the town centre in an easily accessible quiet area. Perfect for jaunts into town or nearby countryside – which we did both regularly or for quality time in the cottage and garden.

Ceret is known for its world class modern art gallery, with an absurd abundance of Picasso pottery, and also for its excellent Saturday Market selling superb food and local oddities and trinkets. We enjoyed both. This attracts a small well heeled niche tourism sector who are well served with good restaurants and street cafes. Perfect to people watch or rest weary feet from wandering the many old streets and squares of old houses and shops in the town centre. It’s all photogenic and fun. Ceret is vibrant and active with visitors and locals. It has the atmosphere and grandeur of a larger town but in reality is really a village

A medium sized Carrefour supermarket was adequate for most needs but actually the bread shop and small grocery shop (both 70m from the cottage – but in opposite directions) meant there was no shortage of supplies or fresh baguettes and croissant (cheap and yummy) and made breakfast a feast. Fresh sliced meats from the butchers next door to the baker made lunches easy

Wander 80m from the cottage down to the petang/boule pitch – we rarely saw anybody there but played most days and then walk onto the disused railway bridge and look in awe past the modern bridge to the famous single span old stone bridge (Pont du Diable) with its imagination inspiring houses tucked on the hillside beside the river. We stopped and picked up a bottle of wine and some cheese to be consumed in the pretty and private garden. A perfect way to enjoy the end of the day.

The Cottage has serious French charm and grace. It was perfect for our needs and wants. The living room with the kitchen was big enough for the needs of 4 adults and 2 children. The kitchen had a few supplies already there. We used some and left others we had bought but not used. We even cooked a BBQ outside one evening which worked great.

I think a hire car is pretty much essential if you want to get out and explore the surrounding countryside (as we did) unless you really just want peace and serenity and desire to close the world out at the front gate and revel and relax in the cottage and garden. A great place to rea

Delightful place

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and our two children (7 and 5) stayed for a week in this great property, and had a lovely time. The house is comfortable, spacious, tastefully decorated and well equipped.

The garden and pool space are absolutely fabulous, the kids adored having a pool(as did the adults!) The town is an easy walk in with plenty of great cafes and shops, plus you have mountains and beaches a short drive away.

Clare is a brilliant host, easy to be in touch with and extremely helpful.

So I would highly recommend this property if you are considering a trip to the South of France.

Comfortable, well equipped and with a lovely pool and garden

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is easy to find near the three bridges on the edge of Céret. The garden area is beautiful with huge shady palm trees and a good sized pool. This is a home rather than a standard holiday let and is beautifully furnished with good indoor and outdoor living spaces. The 2 double beds are really comfortable. Céret itself is gorgeous and vibrant and there are excellent restaurants. You can also sell cater very well as there are 2 large supermarkets and a well equipped kitchen.

We really enjoyed our stay and I for one will have fond memories of reading by the pool in such a lovely setting.

Happy days in Ceret

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is well furnished and everything needed in a self catering property is there. It was quite cool on entering the property and we were grateful for a bed in the smaller bedroom off the main living area, that had plenty of blankets and covers. The floors are tiled which when the weather is much warmer must be welcome but we found they struck cold. The garden was very nice and again the pool would be welcome later in the year, but was cold for us. For young children the pool had a steep drop from 1 metre to 1.9 metre over a short distance. We did not get the best use of this facility. Due to road works one street away, more traffic than usual came past the property so there was a constant flow all day making it quite noisy. However, parking was not a problem outside the property. The Spar store, a few minutes away, was just down the road, turn right out of the property and continue to the right at the island. Good range of groceries and bakery items available. The town of Ceret is lovely and a 15 min walk away, turn left out of the property. We enjoyed exploring the town and visiting the various art galleries. Plenty of places for drinks and meals especially in the old town. We did not travel far only to Argeles sur Mer, which has a lovey beach with plenty of space, not crowded at all. We would gladly go back to the cottage but for the fact that there is no wi-fi. This would not normally have been a problem but there was strike action on the day of our return flight from Perpignan on Tuesday. The email from Ryanair sent on Sunday evening could not picked us by us on Monday. Our daughter who lives in France texted us early on Tuesday morning to make us aware that there may be a problem with our flight but none of us could get confirmation of this. We set off to the airport more in hope than expectation and indeed the airport was deserted when we arrived with no flights available for us until Saturday. We will spare you the events of the following four days, but this did highlight to us the problem of no wi-fi access and something we will bear in mind another time. We enjoyed our stay and would thoroughly recommend a visit.

Owner's Response: So pleased you enjoyed our house, and Ceret. You were very unlucky with the weather : usually by mid-April the summer suddenly appears with soaring temperatures that don't let up until September. It was a long winter everywhere this year. I swam in the pool the week before you arrived ( 20 degrees), but I am used to swimming in the Atlantic, and maybe it is not warm enough for everyone. Wifi is easily available in Ceret and I'm sorry you had such a hard time getting home. Someone on the end of a phone might have been able to sort that out for you. May is a good time to come for less crowded towns and beaches, and it is not too hot, usually one of my favourite months

Great location, lovely house

  • 5 of 5

Ceret is a lively small town, friendly people, and plenty to do. I went to 2 lovely concerts in Salled'Union and in the church. There was a childrens lantern procession from outside the Mairie, and I went to an exhibition opening in one of the many galleries. whatever time of year I come there is always something interesting to join in.

Just 20 miles from the Mediterranean, this cottage is on the edge of the small Pyrenean town of Céret, not far from the spectacular bridges over the river. There is a small supermarket, open 7 days a week, a butcher and a bread/patisserie within a few minutes walk. Céret is a small friendly town, where both French and Catalan can be heard in the not-to-be-missed Saturday market. Spend time in the pavement cafés, discover the old medieval streets, the restaurants, the wonderful galleries, and museums; and wander along the lovely Tech valley, which winds up to the highest southern Pyrenees peak of Canigou. Ideally situated for the Cathar castles of Languedoc, the long Mediterranean beaches, forested walks of the Pyrennes (from the town - just walk uphill!); explore the wine tasting in the surrounding vineyards, or lunch in the artistic centres of Collioure ( 30 mins), Figueres, Spain, (close enough for supper or the Dali Museum), shop in Perpignan; or Barcelona is only 2 hours away. Climb to the castles or explore the beach sports, waterparks, riding, and a famous Prehistoric Park. Something for all ages.

Other Activities: Beach sports(30mins),ski (90),paragliding, quad bikes, guided mountain walks. White water rafting and caving not too far away.
