About this property

Lovely villa with 40m2 pool with Roman steps and panoramic sea views

Villa Nostalgia is a modern villa that is perfect for either families or couples who would like a rural setting with incomparable sea views and sunsets, but would also like to be only a few minutes away from the beach, tavernas, shops and other amenities. Located on a hillside just above the village of Plaka, the villa has absolutely stunning panoramic views of Souda Bay, The Akrotiri Peninsula, the Turkish Castle at Aptera, The White Mountains, and acres of olive groves.

The interior of the villa is particularly comfortable but we are sure that you will want to spend most of your time outdoors in order to enjoy the wonderful views. There is a choice of sun or shade on the many outdoor areas, which are fully equipped with tables and chairs, sun-beds and umbrellas, and a built-in BBQ. There are individual balconies off the twin bedrooms, the pool terrace, and the spacious upstairs sun terrace which is perhaps the best place from which to marvel at the the glorious sunsets.

Villa Nostalgia is set just above another villa but has its own pool and private parking area. The owners are a welcoming local couple who have taken great care in furnishing and decorating the villa. There are natural coloured floor tiles throughout the villa, comfortable leather couches in the living room, dark mahogany furniture in all of the bedrooms, and natural wood cupboards and bookshelves in the kitchen.

The warm coloured draperies and textiles in the villa give the house a lovely friendly feeling. All modern comforts are available at Villa Nostalgia, including Free WIFI internet access, satellite TV, DVD and CD players, dishwasher and washing machine, mosquito screens on all the windows, and air conditioning units in all the bedrooms and the living room.

The a/c units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater.

Villa Nostalgia has extra large water storage tanks to ensure that the villa never runs out of water during our long hot summers.

Plaka village square is only 1.1kms from Villa Nostalgia and is an easy 10 minute walk. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film “Zorba the Greek” and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets just off the mulberry tree lined square.

The modern outskirts of the village have expanded recently as have the facilities, which now include 7 tavernas, an excellent Italian restaurant, 3 well stocked mini markets, a cash machine, and 6 cafes. 3 of these cafes are just a short five minute walk from the villa.

Villa Nostalgia is just 5 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach and has many shops, tavernas, cafes, a scuba diving office, a water sports centre which rents out windsurfers, kayaks, and catamarans. We will give you information where you can get private boat hire, boat trips, big game fishing, horse riding, private sightseeing flights in a light aircraft, and guided walking tours or coach excursions.

*** As of January 01, 2024, the Greek government have replaced the old “bed tax” with a new tax that is applied to all stays in short-term rental accommodation in Greece. The Climate Resilience Levy is a response to the devastating forest fires and floods that Greece has experienced in recent years, with the government hoping to generate extra funding that will go towards financing reconstruction, supporting victims, and increasing the country’s defences against future natural disasters.

The owners of all short-term rental accommodation are legally obliged to collect the Climate Resilience Levy as a separate tax for all overnight stays (per villa) as follows:
€10.00 per night on stays between March 01 and October 31, and €4.00 per night on stays between November 01 and February 28/29.

The Vrbo system does not yet have a section for collecting the Climate Resilience Levy and we have, therefore, had to add it to the billing section as an extra fee which will show on the booking as a Host Fee (until Vrbo update their system).

Whilst we understand the potential budget concerns of our guests, this tax/levy is beyond our control and we encourage our guests to see this as a way of contributing to the protection of the planet and the beautiful area where they are holidaying.

Lovely villa in a beautiful setting. Spotless and well equipped. Pool area is overlooked by a very close bedroom balcony from neighbouring villa that shares the grounds. Owners come regularly to clean and empty bins and check all is ok.

Great Villa, lovely pool area.
Really enjoyed our stay, the Villa was lovely but slight lack of shade late afternoon. Pool area lovely. Great value for money and would highly recommend. Slept very well whilst there as the beds were very comfortable. Local village had lovely Tavernas with home cooked food and very friendly.

Lovely villa with some shortcomings
First, the Villa was beautifully set with absolutely stunning views over the bay of Souda to the north and to the White Mountains to the south-west. The kitchen was very well-appointed with the best electric Cooke I’ve ever used. The pool is a wonderful asset. The house is convenient for shops, restaurants and beach. Maria and Giannis are lovely people, very welcoming, and obliging, with Maria, especially enjoying a good laugh in Broken English and broken Greek. But, the house is not without its shortcomings and irritations. Two of the bedrooms are too small for the furniture, so we couldn’t open the windows and the cupboards fully and the doors hit the beds when opened. We tried moving the beds together to give more space, but the lamp cable then didn’t reach the socket. A longer cable would solve the problem. Given the large site and the huge upstairs balcony, I am bewildered as to why the bedrooms couldn’t have been made a touch bigger. The beds themselves are like concrete, and even our builder friend wasn’t strong enough to tuck the sheets in. Moreover, the sheets on the double bed were too small to cover two average/small people, so we slept in separate rooms. It is not hygienic to have sheets spread directly on top of mattresses that serve sequences of guests. They should use mattress covers that can be laundered between guests. The downstairs shower is microscopic even by Greek standards. It is impossible to stand inside the tiled enclosure to shower because the huge tap protrudes halfway across it. A smaller, higher tap and a larger enclosure would help. We had to turn off the water pump at night because it kicked in every ten minutes with loud whirring noises, waking us up. The big water tank in the garden developed a bad vibration which sounded like a pneumatic drill outside the bedroom windows. Giannis quickly turned up to effect a Greekishly improvised mend with string and plastic bags. Finally, by far the worst shortcoming was the smell from the drains in both bathrooms. We tried everything. Covering the holes with a plastic mat, pouring down dishwasher fluid, putting upturned bowls over them, but the smell was hideous enough to send us running out of the living room every time the shower room door was opened. It made the downstairs rooms almost uninhabitable and even woke me up in my bed upstairs one morning. It must be fixed, or guests won’t return. It’s a real shame; it’s a lovely place.

Villa Nostalgia Plaka Crete
The villa was a lovely size with plenty of crockery etc and very clean. One day we went out leaving our breakfast dishes in the sink and Maria came and washed up even though she didn't need to. Outside area very well set out round the pool. Walk to Plaka for the restaurants was quite easy but need a torch coming back.

Hosted by Villas Crete Holidays

Host profile image
Villa Nostalgia is exclusively booked by Villas Crete Holidays which is a registered Tourist Office, based in Hampshire, England. Whilst most travel companies cover many different countries and/or areas of Greece and Crete, we at Villas Crete Holidays only work in the North West of Crete and we specialise in the Apokoranas region, just east of the historic Venetian town of Chania. The Apokoronas (including the villages of Almyrida, Kalives, Kokkino Horio, Plaka and Gavalohori) has long been a popular destination for holiday makers seeking a typically Greek seaside resort area that has many amenities, but is far removed from brash tourism. The area is renowned for its sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise water, stunning views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, excellent tavernas, and archaeological sites.

The director of Villas Crete Holidays is Frankie Miles. She has worked with rental villas on Crete for more than 20 years and has written the best selling guide book "Crete on the Road". The book includes detailed directions and information to all the major tourist attractions, as well as many hidden sites. Also in the book is the only existing map of the National Highway showing all of the entrances/exits and distances.

Both the company itself, and Frankie's book have been featured and recommended in articles in major British newspapers including the Sunday Mail and the Sunday Telegraph, as well as smaller publications such as Greece Magazine.

Why they chose this property

Villa Nostalgia is a good value property with fantastic views and a great location only 900m from the excellent tavernas and well stocked mini markets in Plaka. With a walk to the amenities you can go to the shops at any time, and you can go to have a delicious meal and a drink (or two) on the village square without worrying about driving home.

Plaka is such a safe and family friendly village, that parents can relax at Villa Nostalgia knowing that their teenagers and older children can go into the village on their own without a problem.

For travellers who are on a budget but they want views and all modern amenities, Villa Nostalgia is ideal.

What makes this property unique

All of our villa owners employ a local house manager who you can call should you need any help at the villa itself.

We, at Villas Crete Holidays can help you with all aspects of your holiday including good value, reliable car hire, airport transfers, local information about shops, beaches, tavernas etc, detailed driving directions or walking directions for many routes. We can give your contact details for private boat hire, private boat trips, private sight-seeing flights, horse riding, big game fishing, guided walking, and guided coach excursions. Our office staff speak English, Greek, and a little French.

Most importantly, because we handle many villas, in the unlikely event that there is an unforeseen problem at your villa, we can usually offer you an alternative villa (although this cannot be guaranteed in high season).

We have many years experience working in tourism on Crete, and most importantly this experience is specifically related to villa rentals. We use all of our knowledge and local contacts to ensure that your holiday goes off smoothly from start to finish, from booking the villa that is most suitable for you, all the way through to your arrival back home.
