About the property

2 bedroom cottage, sleeps 4, set in lovely garden.

Libellule (Dragonfly) is a 2 bedroom converted barn in Liboulas, a quiet hamlet overlooking the Gironde estuary, 3.5 km from the beautiful and historic village of Talmont sur Gironde and just 8km from the nearest beaches at Meschers. If you have young children, you'll find the 5 sheltered beaches at nearby Meschers ideal for your summer holiday. For older children, the long sandy beach at St Georges de Didonne (just fifteen minutes away) provides loads of waterports and activities. After a day at the beach, you can relax in the lovely garden or snooze in the hammock under the shade of apple and plum trees. There's lots to do in the immediate area - Le Fa, an excavation of a roman port,or the Parc de l'Estuaire, just beyond Meschers. See our website for more information - www.liboulas.com.

There's high quality produce in the local markets & vineyards to tempt you to make good use of the well-equipped kitchen or the barbecue. If you'd rather eat out, the nearest restaurant is in the village of Arces just 1.5km away, and there are plenty more within a ten minute drive.

The light, airy open plan living/dining/kitchen area has a double height ceiling over the living area and is comfortably furnished with sofa & 2 armchairs, flat screen LCD TV with British freesat, French & other European satellite channels , DVD/CD player, amplifier & speakers, with loads of DVDs & CDs. And if you have to keep in touch, we have WiFi!

The dining table seats 4. The kitchen is well equipped with multifunction oven, gas hob, espresso machine, Dualit toaster, washer/dryer, dishwasher, & fridge-freezer.

French windows to the front and to the courtyard provide lots of light.

The ground floor bathroom has both shower & bath, and a heated towel rail.

Stairs lead to a gallery landing – a safety gate is available for young children. Bedroom 1 is a twin room with 2 very comfortable futon beds, canvas wardrobe & drawer units; & a velux window for stargazing.

The romantic main bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe, bedside cupboards & antique pine chest of drawers. Its windows overlook the garden (east) and the courtyard (west) and it has a large ensuite shower room with heated towel rail.

Libellule has under-floor heating throughout, except in the twin bedroom which has an electric radiator. Good insulation & double glazing keep the cottage snug in the cooler months - there is also underfloor central heating.

Libellule has its own private courtyard with carport. There is access to Libellule's suntrap patio with garden dining furniture and gas barbecue, and to the large secure garden (shared use with the owners' family in July and on occasional maintenance visits).

There's plenty of lawn space for your children to play, or for you to relax in the hammock or on the loungers, whilst taking in the view down to the Gironde. Roses & shrubs scent the air, whilst resident song birds serenade you. In season you can help yourselves to apricots, plums, figs, apples & pears straight from the tree & pick fresh herbs to flavour your cooking. The garden is bird-friendly , with birdbaths, feeders & nestboxes. We are applying for LPO (French equivalent of the RSPB) 'Garden Reserve' status.

There is parking for one car in Libellule's courtyard & also in the owners' driveway.

About Linda & Richard Austin

Linda's family bought the main house (now only occupied in July and on maintenance visits) over 25 years ago, and so they have spent many holidays here. Linda & Richard have explored the area extensively and can recommend holiday activities, restaurants and vineyards, as well as local festivals, musical events and fireworks!.

Linda & Richard Austin purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Linda & Richard Austin chose Charente-Maritime

Three generations of Linda's family have holidayed here, as the main house was bought over 25 years ago. The lovely mature garden and orchard, and the unique location - in the country, yet close to great beaches - make this a great base for a family holiday or a relaxing break. .

What makes this cottage unique

The view from the garden down to the Gironde and Talmont is so lovely! And the natural environment around Liboulas is outstanding, rare birds, bees, butterflies, and, you've guessed - libellules (dragonflies).

Lovely property, just as described, well-equipped and comfortable. Nice welcome, and considerate service throughout.

Many activities close by, and varied landscapes within easy reach. Great for oysters - and many other local delights.

Thoroughly recommended.

We congratulate the owners for providing a complete and beautifully detailed cottage. All comforts were catered for including music, games, books, Wi Fi and English and French TV.

The place was beautifully clean and tidy when we arrived and we trust that we left it in the same state!

The owners were there when we arrived and provided us with clear detailed instructions and were very friendly and courteous.

There is much to do and see in the area, our favourites included the Phare du Courduan and the town of Saintes, the restuarant in Arces only 2 km away serves a quality meal.

We feel very privileged to have been able to stay in this delightful dwelling

Owner's Response: Jenny & Graeme were our first Australian visitors, and good used Libellule's Wi-Fi to stay in touch with their family back home by Skype! They made the most of this area's rich cultural heritage, taking in a chamber music concert as well. There are musical events throughout the region - the 4-month "Jeudis Musicaux" season and the Santes festival for classical music lovers, as well as rock & blues festivals and jazz venues. We recommend a boat trip to France's oldest and best-loved lighthouse, the 400-year old Phare de Cordouan, to all our guests - older children love wading ashore from the dinghy and the chance to picnic on the sandbank. And the interior rivals many chateaux! Linda & Richard

Lovely cottage in beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely holiday at Libellule Cottage - it is a beautifully decorated and immaculate cottage with everything you could need provided. We also very much enjoyed meeting Linda and Richard who were both full of information about what to see and where to eat in this beautiful area of France

Owner's Response: Our guests all tell us about the great eating-out opportunities in the immediate area and we've been doing some more "tasting" ourselves. Our "local" restaurant Le Cottage (1 km away) made it into the prestigious Gault Millau guide this year, winning high praise for the delightful combination of irish & french influences. If you love good food & wine, this is the place!

Super accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Libuelle made for a comfortable and homely base to enjoy a lovely area. The accommodation was superb! Thoughtfully furnished and equiped cottage with a secluded large garden. Just about every need catered for. Richard and Linda are helpful and efficient.

The property is superbly maintained and cleaned. The courtyard is brilliant for safe parking of car and easy use when packing to go to the beaches, La Rochelle, Cognac etc.

The beautiful local beaches are sandy and are only a short drive away. Talmont and Meschers are literally minutes away.

Le Cottage restaurant in Acres is within one mile and worth a visit.

We found this a great holiday experience and can recommend without question. We've booked again!

Liboullas near Meschers

  • 5 of 5

Liboullas was exactly as described and even better, very clean a real home from home. The lovely sandy beaches at Meschers are only a short trip in the car, St George de Didonne and Royan were not that far either and we tried them all. There is a very good restuarant in Arces just a couple of minutes in the car and good seafood restuarants in Meschers and a good mixture of choices in St George de Didonne. We even fitted in some wine tastings as suggested by Linda and Richard, very good and well priced. We would definitely recommend this gite to friends and family.

Liboulas is two miles from Talmont, one of 'France's Most Beautiful Villages', with its 11th century Compostella pilgrim church & hollyhock-lined streets. Talmont has several tourist & craft shops, as well as restaurants. On Tuesday evenings in high season, you can soak up the atmosphere of the candle-lit streets to do some late shopping.

Closer is Arces, with its boulangerie and well-regarded Franco/Irish restaurant Le Cottage. Local produce is used as far as possible for the modern irish & french dishes which attract the locals and tourists alike, and the music evenings are great fun. The Whitsun flower festival at Arces draws in the crowds, and the fireworks for Bastille Day out-do most British towns ten times the size.

Meschers' little port is lined with fish restaurants - try one for Sunday lunch after shopping at the market. Or you can relax over brunch at Tina's Cafe at Meschers' Plage des Nonnes while your children play on the beach.

Royan is just 20 minutes away.
