We rented this house months ahead of our vacation week in August of 2015. A couple of weeks before we were set to arrive the owner contacted us to see if we could come in one day later to accommodate a group that wanted to come in between our reservation and the previous reservation. I told him that we were driving in for this three-day weekend from several spots in the Midwest and we really wanted the three nights we had reserved but if he could find us other accommodations for the first night in the same area, we'd be willing to give up our first night. He refunded the first night back to us without finding another spot because he said that he wasn't able to find anything. We told him that wouldn't be acceptable and that we would give the money back to him and stay with the original contract. In the meantime, he went to Europe and did not return any of our messages. Since he didn't contact us, we made the assumption that he had worked things out so we headed to Illinois on the original day we had booked. The people in the first group to arrive from Minnesota and used the code to open the front door and the house was a disaster — absolutely filthy. When the second car was close to arriving from Ohio we were calling the rental company to express our concerns and ask that a cleaning crew be sent to the property. Just as we pulled into town we got the world that the entire reservation had been cancelled earlier that day without us being told. By that time the third car from Wisconsin was about two hours away. We vacated the property and as we were leaving two men pulled up and asked what we were doing there. They said they had rented the house and had it rented through the weekend. So, there we were with two car loads of people, including a toddler, another car on the way and no place to stay for our three-day weekend. What was supposed to be a fun-filled family vacation started off with one of the most stressed-filled days for our entire party thanks to this home owner. We would not recommend renting this place.
Our family has rented homes thru VRBO many times and have had great experiences. We enjoyed our stay at this home simply because we were together as a family and there is a lot to do in this area, but would caution future renters about this property. This owner will promise much, but will not deliver. We visited the home prior to our stay, and the owner gave us a brief tour. He indicated that the lower level floor was being replaced due to water damage and would be available to us upon our arrival. It was locked and unavailable to us upon arrival. He showed us a pile of weeds that he indicated would be a pristine fire pit upon our arrival. It was still a pile of weeds when we arrived. His ad boasts 4 TVs and indeed there are 4 TVs, but only one is functional. The owner gave us the incorrect key code and was out of the country so couldn't provide the correct one until many hours after he'd promised we could arrive. We are glad to say that our experience with this property is an isolated one, and with all the lovely properties to choose from, I'd recommend potential renters continue looking.
The house was near enough to Starved Rock to be a feasible drive for day hikes. It was also a very good price for the location since it was about 30 minutes to our ultimate destination. The property owner was extremely flexible and nice and worked with us. He is also extremely responsive to any questions.
If you are looking for a quiet place to stay with family or friends, this is an amazing house. You have all the amenities you would enjoy in your home; fully equipped kitchen with everything you would need to cook-even a dishwasher. There is a smart tv, netflix, and music for a fun night in. There are three levels with 5 bedrooms, all clean and modern. I would describe the house itself as contemporary with a little retro spin. There is also a huge deck with a good size charcoal grill and an outdoor table and seating. The only negative thing I would say about the house is the master bathroom is dated, but it was clean and prettied up with candles and some decor.
The owner, Josh, was there to greet us when we got there and showed us how everything worked. He was also available by phone/text to answers questions. We would definitely stay there again. I don't think you can beat the price. It is a beautiful home... the picture gallery was right on!
Thanks Josh for an excellent getaway with my family!
