Spend your days exploring North Hawaii's stunning views and engaging activities; return to your temporary retreat to grill fresh local foods; read a book or make friends with the Jackson chameleons in your private yard; watch satellite TV (or streaming services via our Apple TV); get in the hammock and gaze at the stars.

NOTE: the staircase depicted goes to an unfinished attic; all the living spaces are at ground level.

About David T. Cole

We are David T. Cole and Tara Ariano. Since meeting in St. Catharines, Ontario, twenty years ago and marrying in 1997, we've lived in Toronto, Ontario; New York, NY; and Los Angeles, CA.

We bought this property in 2014, and we both live and work here in the main house. We are web entrepreneurs and two of the co-founders of the website Television Without Pity; since selling it, we've gone on to co-found the website Previously.TV and co-create its several related podcasts, all of which we produce right here at home, ably assisted by Gordon Lightfoot, our Great Dane/Pointer mix; and by Anne Murray, our Catahoula Leopard mix.

Why David T. Cole chose Kamuela

After having visited the Big Island half a dozen times on vacation, we bought this property -- dubbed Fort Awesome after an episode of "NewsRadio," one of our favorite TV shows -- in late 2014. We chose Waimea for its conveniences, its proximity to our favorite beaches, and its quiet. Our neighborhood immediately struck us as homey and friendly, and the kind of place that could be both a comfortable refuge and a serene setting to encourage our creativity.

What makes this guest house unique

We were charmed by the layout of the front yard: setting the houses far back along the edges of the property line makes for a luxurious front lawn, and provides views from both the main and the guest house of the tree swings and mature sheltering trees. We also liked the idea of buying a home with a separate guest house not just so we could host our own far-flung relatives, but also new visitors to the area: since we always loved our visits, we're thrilled at the prospect of helping others discover their favorite activities, meals, and experiences on the Big Island.

Great location

It was great location for doing our sight-seeing on Hawaii north. Rental had a nice layout, kitchen open into living room and barbecue outside bedroom patio door. Cooled down nicely at nite for sleeping.

"Fort Awesome" - the name says it all

This property and its hosts provide everything needed to enjoy the parts of the Big Island that one does not have access to when staying in the tourist-only zones on the coasts.

The accommodations are roomy, neat, well-provisioned and furnished in an amusing and eclectic fashion. Everything is neatly labelled - no fumbling around for the correct light switch or poking around for extra towels. And the queen-sized bed was comfortable (the most important criteria for me during an activity-packed vacation). The hosts are friendly and helpful, and their canine companions are welcoming and adorable.

This property is convenient to the Mauna Kea summit and the WM Keck Observatory Headquarters, and the Imiloa Planetarium is a magnificent 75-minute drive along the northeastern coast, for those who are interested in astronomy. Fort Awesome/Downtime Abbey is also within a 5-10 minute drive of three great restaurants - the Hawaiian Style Cafe (for massive portions of diner-style breakfast food), the Big Island Brewhaus (for burgers, beer and other casual dining options), and the Red Water Cafe (for sushi and fine dining).

Great location and good living space

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Fort Awesome and loved the accessibility to the town of Waimea for restaurants, market, etc, and even better to do exploring. The Hamakua coast is a must see from the Hilo airport to Honoka'a where there's a small, but excellent Sunday farmers' market. On other days we drove up to Hawi as well as the Kohala Coast. The gorgeous Hapuna Beach was just barely a half hour's drive in the very early a.m. and the beach was empty! David and Tara provided the basics for cooking (olive oil, seasonings, etc.) as well as a coffee maker and all the large appliances. The washing machine and dryer in a large bedroom closet was very practical and convenient. Our last day, we spent some time talking with David since he and my husband have photocopy in common. The queen sized bed was quite comfortable.

Great accomodation in a great location

This is a great appartment, with all the facilities you could want from a guest house. And in a great location for exploring the north end of the island.

The hosts were very friendly and welcoming.

The only minor downside was that it wasn't walking distance from downtown Waimea, but that wasn't a big drama.

Great place to stay!

We loved our stay at Fort Awesome! Cozy, well equipped and friendly hosts, made this place a perfect pick. Located in Waimea, BTig Island, it's a great location to get to Waipo Valley (suggest Waipo Valley 4-Wheel Van Shuttle Tour) and convenient to get to Maui Lani Sea Adventure for a great snorkel tour. Highly recommended!
