Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Camaiore - Il Grottone

2 bedroom cottage on three floors. Sleeps 4. Near Camaiore, Northern Tuscany

A lovely rustic Italian villa in Tuscany, situated in the Apuane hills in the tiny hamlet of Luciana, about 2 km from the small village of Casoli, and 5 km from Camaiore in the region of Versilla which is north west Tuscany. A holiday home of very high standard for those that wish to enjoy the Tuscan mountains, the seaside, and the famous marble quarries and associated artistic activities. A peaceful and tranquil place with fantastic views of the Apuana Alps and the coast. The house is furnished to a high standard, it being used by the owner in the winter months. The sea and coastal resorts of Lido di Camaiore and Viareggio being some 12km. The histortical walled city of Lucca about 25 km and that of Pisa some 35 km drive away. It is recommended to bring comfortable walking shoes as the path to the house is stony.

For the more adventurous the surrounding hills provide for excellent and interesting walks, offering fantastic views both inland and across the sea. There is also the opportunity to take a dip in the rocks pools close to Casoli. It is well worth a visit to the nearby (Cararra) marble quarries, from where the marble for the Statue of David in Florence was extracted.

Dear Frank

Thank you for letting out Tre Scoli to us - we had a very lovely time. It is very beautiful area and we enjoyed walking down to Casoli and along the footpaths. Thank you also for sourcing the cot and high chair they were extremely useful.

Kind regards

Beautiful Cottage up in the Mountains

  • 5 of 5

It is not too common to feel right at home in a rented vacation home. Yet, this is exactly what happened after we finally arrived (our car broke down halfway to Italy) in Casoli. The cottage is beautifully located in the Alpe Apuane mountains, yet just half an hours drive or so from the beach. We had big plans about hiking through the hills and visiting cultural highlights in the nearer and not-so-near neighborhood, but with the exception of one day in Florence (hint: don't go there by car - the train delivers you right to the city center for € 16/person roundtip!) we spent the entire time either up in the mountains or down at the beautiful (and - in September - affordable) beach of Pietrasanta.

The property is fully equipped with everything you need - with the exception of Internet access which, in my view, is a good thing to have a relaxing and quiet vacation.

One caveat, though: Bring shoes with structured rubber soles - especially in the morning, or after the occasional rain shower, the steps from the parking lot up to the house can be a bit slippery. Also not recommended for people who are handicapped when walking.

We are already planning our return in 2013!

Owner's Response: Unfortunately the path from the car park leading up to the property is a public footpath. As such is beyond my control. Thought has been given obtaining an Internet facility, however I am advised by my neighbours that connections speeds are very slow.

Beautiful and cosy house.

  • 4 of 5

The house is very beautiful and offside the touristic masses. Even though you are in half an hour at the beach (whre you have to find the small public beaches if you don't want to pay 25-50 Euro the day). You have a look at the sea from the mountain, where the house is and you can make many interesting and beatiful trips from there. We had every day fine cooking, using the herbs from the garden. Children should be save in walking because of the stony stairs. We had a great time.

Lovely Tuscan home in stunning mountain setting

  • 5 of 5

This property was perfect in every way, a real home from home. We do a lot of cooking and everything you could possibly need was there. It was very comfortable, cozy and peaceful. We had a lovely walk down to the village below one morning and then up the mountain the other way in the afternoon so if you don't want to drive anywhere it is ideal. It is a very good location to get to lots of places in and around northern Tuscany, close to a town and just a short drive to the sea.

The property was just as we expected it to be, very well maintained and clean and the service from the owner was excellent. We would certainly recommend the property to friends and family.

The house is so quaint and every thing you could ask for, the beds are so comfortable and the views are out of this world,it has all the amenities in the kitchen and ever so clean, i enjoyed having our meals their in the evening.

If you want to go exploring their are some great mountain walks,

i have been 3 years now and love going,if you haven't got transport there is a bus service which will get you to the local town you may have a mile walk to the bus stop,i used the trains in Viareggio to get me to Lucca and Pisa,

the local bar which is near the bus stop is also the place you get your groceries and they also do bar meals,i went into Florence which is a wonderful place to see, and also the Marble mines,

you need to go a few times to see all the lovely places, The owner provided every thing we needed and i would recommend this holiday to any of my friends and relatives. I can't wait till my next visit which will be in sept,2010

Absolut ruhig, fantastischer Ausblick

  • 4 of 5

Camaiore is a quiet and thriving old town of Roman origin at the foot of the Apennines and marble mountains. Twenty minutes away from the fashionable beaches and shopping centres of Forte de Marmi and Viareggio. Many tourist attractions at nearby: Pisa, Lucca, & Florence (60 minutes car drive), Pietrasanta, Portovenere and Lerici. A preferred spot by artists, writers and film directors, as still unspoilt by mass tourism. Camaiore with it's mediaeval churches, Roman remains, and its proximity to historic towns such as Forte de Marmi, Pietrasanta and Carrara, and its vicinity to the sea, makes for a perfect and relaxing holiday. Many good restaurants in the area offer the visitor a taste of local Tuscan recipes and good wines. Excellent local food shops provide the traveller with the best of Italian groceries, wines and vegetables.
