We enjoyed very much our stay at Barb's Guesthouse. The house was warm and inviting, and we were able to explore the area (Red Lodge, Columbus, Fishtail, etc...) without having to drive much. It is a great place to bring your entire family. The house contained everything needed to cook, and it was comfortable place to just hang out and spend time in a very casual environment. I highly recommend it.
I would recommend it to my friends. The Absarokee area is really picturesque and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Our hostess was a peach.
Barb's Place was a great base camp for fly fishing the Stillwater River and Rosebud Creek. The covered patio was great for keeping stuff inside but out of the main house. In the spring or fall, someone could easily sleep on the futon in the covered patio bringing the comfortable sleeping number up to 8 though it might be a bit warm in the summer. The kitchen worked well for the three of us and could easily accommodate more. The grill worked great and the upper porch was very nice. There was a bit of a smokey smell in the house, but that may have been from the neighbors and it quickly dissipated after leaving the windows open for a bit. Other than that it was a clean and tidy house. I was also a bit surprised at how well it stayed cool even when the temperatures hit the 90s.
Word of warning if you're new to the Stillwater region, drive slow at dusk. We saw 100s of deer coming back from fishing and at least 30 on the football field every night (my son said they were playing football while we slept). Also, like many small towns, Absarokee shuts down promptly at nine during the week (we got back a bit after nine one of the nights and ended up eating nachos since everything was closed). Do check out the Dew Drop Inn, the Fishtail General Store, the Grizzly Bar, and the Cowboy Bar, some of our favorites in the area.
The owner was nice and allowed us to bring our dog. However, the first floor is uneven and rooms have a little lip that we tripped on. My mom slipped and had a hard fall landing underneath the kitchen table. It's quite dangerous for older people. Even though we washed and dried all the dishes, took care of the little trash we had and left the place clean (except for folding up sheets, which I feel is the responsibility of the owner since they need to be washed) we received a 3 star for cleanliness. I'm not sure what she expects of guests. There is no bathroom on the top level so keep that in mind if you have older people with you or young kids. Decorations are pretty tacky. But if you need a place to put your head, it works and is clean.
Great base location to explore the Stillwater, East and West Rosebud streams and trails. Home was clean and comfortable. Kitchen was well equipped and the 2nd level deck was a nice place to unwind at the end of the day. Not much for evening dining in Absarokee but Fishtail (Cowboy) and Roscoe (Grizzly) are not far away. We will be back.
This would be a great place to spend more than one night! We stopped for the night, on our way to Yellowstone. The house is very nice, clean and comfortable. The upstairs deck was very nice. Beds were comfortable, they are hard, but we like that.
The town is nice and peaceful. We got in late, so we went down to Fishtail and ate at Cowboy Bar. Great food!!! Also appreciated being able to wash and dry several loads of clothes! Thanks!!
