About the property

3 bedroom home one block from the Aerial Lift Bridge and the beach, Bay access

This classic cape-cod home is now completely remodeled and redecorated. It is full of the quality touches of mission-style construction, yet updated with all the modern conveniences. Just one block from canal park, there is plenty to do and see, all within easy walking distance.

The huge upstairs Master Bathroom Suite with King size bed includes a sitting area and a 3/4 bath. The two bedrooms on the main floor have excellent twin beds, and a full hotel-style bath serves the main floor. Cook memorable meals in the well-stocked kitchen that is open to the family room area. The back deck off the kitchen is perfect for gatherings and barbeques, and faces a huge back yard and St. Louis Bay. Two kayaks and adult-sized life jackets are in the yard for your use, and beach towels and mats are supplied for your leisurely walk to the beach. At the other end of the point, 4 and 1/2 miles away, is the Park Point recreation area with sailing and boat launch facilities. You can arrange to park your boat in the back yard and then dock at the end of the point. Housebroken dogs are allowed with a non-refundable pet deposit.

Even though close to canal park, the home is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, and is licensed as a vacation rental, Permit, #PL14-069, and Hotel/Motel License #700021. Loud parties, excessive drinking, or substance abuse are not welcome at this home or in our neighborhood. Also please note that the owner has the right to come and go from the basement apartment 24/7.

About Mary DuBois

Always a mid-westerner, I raised my children on the Iron Range of Minnesota, and moved to Duluth to run the Community College. I've been an educator all my life and had many wonderful jobs and experiences, and am presently teaching online for Bemidji State University. I live with my partner Lindy in the middle part of the state, but spend quite a bit of time on the point, especially when my daughter comes from Norway for 6 weeks. I have a publishing company, and also write fiction (under the pen name 'Bernie DuBois') and have written children's books (under the name Mary Koski) so the creativity of the point is special to me.

Mary DuBois purchased this house in 2013

Why Mary DuBois chose Park Point

I so much wanted to return to the point after living there for many years in the mid-1990s and then again in 2005. When I last left the point, I thought that I might never be able to return, until I found this home that needed some TLC. Many projects later, I'm thrilled with the house and with the location. Nothing like sitting out on the deck at sunset and watching a ship go by! It is a magical, peaceful place. Yet blocks away there are tourists and energetic families and romantic couples - just a perfect mix of vacationers and people who have lived here their entire lives. I have fixed up the basement apartment for myself, so that if I have guests, I can still come and go for the occasional night in Duluth.

What makes this house unique

When I saw this home for the first time, I loved the mission-style construction that goes from the front door to the ceiling trim in the living room! During my remodel, I even kept the old coat hangers in the entryway and the pearled light switch covers, for old-time sake. I couldn't part with the 1950's awnings either - I had them repainted and reinstalled! The original hard-wood floors on the main floor are gorgeous, and the Master suite upstairs has just the right creaking from the original planked floors.

We had a great time. The house worked perfectly with the size and the location was wonderful.

  • 5 of 5

Great stay. The house has 3 bedrooms which meant the kids had their own space and with 2 bathrooms that made for no waiting. There were lots of options for tv viewing and the kitchen had everything we needed. The back yard was large and we took some time to kick the soccer ball around. There was a fire pit and chairs and a deck as well so lots to do outside. Also great sunsets and views of the big ships as the harbour was very close to the end of the yard.

The house location was great. While not on the beach, it was only a short walk and we went every day that it wasn't raining. We were only a few blocks from the lift bridge and Canal Park. We literally parked the car when we arrived and did not use it till we left. Everything we needed was in walking distance and most we could walk on trails to get to. We had a good time and the house was great.

Loved it

  • 5 of 5

Excellent location, great appliances, bedding etc. Lots of cabinet space and filled with dishes, pots and pans and extra spices and condiments which we didn't bring.

Loved sitting on the deck watching the boats go by. Booking again for next year. Met owner Mary. Enjoyed talking to her and hearing about the history of the property. She has a lovely garden in the front which we were complimented on by several people walking by.

Mary was very helpful and easy to work with.

  • 5 of 5

Mary's place is in a fantastic location. I can't really imagine a better spot unless you were directly on the non harbor side of water but you'd also pay twice as much there. Mary providing bikes and kayaks are a huge plus. You are close enough to comfortably bike anywhere you want off of canal park which is nice since you have to pay for parking everywhere. It is an older home that has been updated nicely. It is comfortable and has everything you need. Kitchen could use one nice, big non stick skillet. It had a stainless steel one. Great deck area and back yard for kids to play. The biggest negative I'd have was that another tv upstairs would have helped alot without getting away from the kids at night and bedtime. There is a really nice beach across the street where the bed and breakfast neighbors graciously let us cut through their yard for quick access with the kids. Initially I thought it was a bit pricey when I booked but once I saw the location I knew we got a great deal. A quick Zillow search will tell you that lake front property off the canal strip is very high. Overall we had a great time and would stay with Mary again if we do another Duluth get away. On a side note, Go to VA Bene just past Fitgers. Absolutely fantastic food. Best Paninis I've every had. Very good Italian food. Do not bother with the pricey Belisios as it doesn't stand up and is costs twice as much. You can Bike there but make a reservation for a lakefront view or go in non peak time. Also Hartly Park, and Lester Park are great hiking/biking Parks. And make a trip up to Gooseberry Falls which was incredible. Also Nathan with I'd rather be fishing fishing charter was a great time and we caught 7 big Trout.

Great place for family

  • 5 of 5

My spouse and I have taken our four grandchildren to Duluth for three summers, staying at this property every time. It is in a great location, near all the things we love, sand beaches, rock beaches, the Lake Walk and the lift bridge. We have cookouts in the backyard, walk miles both ways, chill out in the house.

Loved the place, comfortable and appealing.

Would have liked to have started our stay with a clean refrigerator. Other than that everything was great! May return one day.

Great Location, restaurants, and nearby beach.

  • 3 of 5

We loved the area and the owner was very accommodating. However, due to our previous experiences with VRBO, we have come to expect a little more. Some updating needs to be performed and perhaps local area recommendations made available. Realizing that one never knows just how warm it will get during the summer, more than one window air conditioner or at least ceiling fans in all the rooms, could be a future consideration.

Owner's Response: It would have been helpful had you communicated your concern of the air conditioning, and I could have explained how to keep the house cool with the unit that is there. I did indeed notice that you had left on a warm day without the air conditioning unit left on - very difficult then to cool everything down then once you get back home. Those instructions were also in the house book, for those occasions when Duluth is warm - not too often, but maybe increasing now.
