The Awazo Cottage sits on 5 acres with 300 feet of private shoreline on Devil Track Lake. It is a wonderful place to come and relax and enjoy everything that the Northwoods has to offer. It offers the best of both worlds in that it is very private and on a lake, but is only a 12-15 minute drive from downtown Grand Marais!
A dock with benches allows you to sit down on the lake and take in all of the beautiful sunsets that this location provides, and there are a ton. In addition there is a platform dock in a protected cove which would make a great place to dock a boat. There is a boat launch conveniently located on the North side of lake if you have a boat you can bring.
In the main house there are 2 bedrooms that sleep four; the master has a queen bed and the guest room has a double. There are also 2 gorgeous bathrooms that are both newly remodled; clean and pristine.
Down the path about 50 feet from the main house is the bunk house or "Little Devil" as we call it :) It has a beautiful, hand drawn pine bunk bed and a queen size sleep sofa, sleeping four in total. Little Devil is literally steps from the lake and is a great place for viewing the Northern Lights at night!
There is a large fire pit in the front yard down near the lake and it is just perfect for nighttime bonfires. Don't forget the Smores fixins!
A big bonus for those of you who enjoy fishing is that Devil Track Lake is known as a great fishing lake. Walleye, Northern, Small Mouth Bass, and Whitefish, often easy to catch by casting right off the dock!
I'm a Minnesota native from the Twin Cities who was exposed to the North Shore at a very young age. I always knew I would live here some day and that dream has come true. I live here now full time and will never really leave. On that note I have a warning to all who might rent here.....once you spend some time here, you're going to find it very hard to leave!
Danielle purchased this cottage in 2013
This property was perfect, 300ft of private lake shore well off the road (almost a 1/4 of a mile) yet only 8 miles from town.
If you like beautiful sunsets this is the place. Located on the south shore, we have an unobstructed view to the North and to the West, which also makes it ideal for viewing the Northern Lights.
The Key to this property for me is the views from the family room - virtually a 180 Degree view of lake. Fantastic!
This is a beautiful cabin on a great piece of property. We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin is rustic but with amenities - new bathrooms, nice gas cooking range, dishwasher etc. The only things that could improve a Fall stay are dry firewood storage (the wood stove is the main source of heat) and better lighting (there are lots of dim lamps, but it's hard to light up the space on a gray day). The kitchen is well-equipped except for a mismatch of pots/pans and lids. Overall though we loved the cabin and hope to rent it again.
Once again we had a wonderful and relaxing time at Awazo. The cabin has everything you need and feels like your own cabin in the woods. The appliances and fixtures are top notch. The property and lakeshore are just wonderful and so private. We certainly will be back!!!
My husband and I joined our daughter and her boyfriend at AWAZO for a glorious week. We have all been to Gran Marais before , and will come back. we will very likely returned to this house. It more than met our needs and expectations. The sitting room surrounded by huge glass windows is very comfortable , and is the place we spent a lot of time. We talked, napped, played games , did puzzles and just looked at the lake and birch trees outside. Heavenly.
The kitchen was extremely well-equipped. We can say this with some credibility, given that Jeff is a chef in the twin cities. We ate in every evening except 2, one at the Angry Trout and the second, on the last night. Table is beautiful for dining, dishes are lovely, and pots are of excellent quality. We recycled , given a large can under the sink for that purpose. We loved that all the soaps and cleaners were natural products.
The main bedroom is has a very comfortable bed and an amazing bathroom. The smaller bedroom has a bed that Jeff and Kirstin felt was not only too small, but not comfortable. So they de-camped to the bunkhouse nearby to sleep and sit up at night. There is a wood stove in that site as well as the main cabin. They loved the twin beds in the bunkhouse, and really enjoyed the sitting room and fire there for their use. I would think the small bed in the main house might work nicely for 2 kids or one adult.
The great thing about AWAZO was that it was away from Gran Marais (15 minute drive) but close enough that one could easily go into town to shop for food or what out. Hiking is very close . We hiked or fished every day.
Everything was so thoughtfully done , including the furnishings and decorations in general. Danielle was available by phone, email or text with any questions we had. We absolutely loved this place and will return.
We had a wonderful time at Awazo again this year. The cabin and the lot are perfect for a week in the woods. We were comfortable and were able to really relax. The dogs had a great time too. We spent a lot of time sitting in those new Adirondack chairs on the deck. What a perfect relaxing place to sit and read and look out over the lake. I know we will return.
We have stayed at a number of cabins and resorts on the North Shore, and this was one of our favorites. The cabin is a quick and easy drive from Grand Marais, but the lake felt very private and peaceful even on the weekend. It's sometimes hard to tell when booking lake property, but the cabin is situated very close the water, and we loved how we had an amazing view of the lake, even when inside the cabin. We stayed for 7 nights, and had 7 perfect sunsets! The cabin itself was very nicely decorated and updated, but still felt rustic. The boathouse was a fun bonus, and would be perfect for older kids. We got a lot of use out of the deck, picnic table, and fire pit when we were around. Great base for hiking (Oberg Mountain Loop and White Sky Rock by Caribou are favorites), dining in Grand Marais (Voyageur Brewing, Angry Trout, Crooked Spoon, and of course Pizza at Sven and Oles), or enjoying Lake Superior (our kids actually swam in Lake Superior and loved it), yet nice to have a more private setting to come back to each day. The owners were responsive and easy to deal with. We would love to stay again.
We had a fabulous stay at Awazo. The cabin was comfortably furnished, had fantastic private location on the shores of Devil Track Lake within 15 min of Grand Marias and was updated nicely with modern baths. What makes this one stand out are the little extra touches- ample supply of fluffy towels, great amenities like lavender shampoo and a well stocked kitchen. The teens loved the bunkhouse and dogs loved the lake! We left with smiles after an incredible week.
