About David George

We both grew up in Southern California but have lived in Northern California since our wedding 40 years ago. Our primary home is in the San Francisco East Bay and have owned our cabin in Big Trees Village since 1988. Our vacation rental home, the Bluebird House is just down the street from our own cabin.

David George purchased this chalet in 2013

Why David George chose Dorrington

The Bluebird House is spacious and can accommodate one or two families with ease, and is DOG FRIENDLY. The 5,000 foot elevation guarantees heavy snow in winter months and sunny, warm days during the summertime. We maintain an annual membership in the local Big Trees Recreation Center for our rental guests' use during the summer months. The Rec Center provides picnicking, a kids playground, ball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and two swimming pools. There is a gate charge for daily use of the swimming pools per individual or family.

What makes this chalet unique

We welcome 1-2 small to medium size dogs, as long as you do not leave the dog(s) in the house alone. The large deck has a latched gate for containment of pets or small children. The large level lot is unusual for the hilly neighborhood. A gas BBQ is provided for guest use and there are snow platters and horseshoes available in the outdoor closet. The flat driveway provides easy access during winter snow months and the driveway is plowed during snow storms. A sunny bay window seat is a great place to read or enjoy the falling snow.

Please remove your shoes when you are inside the home. Absolutely NO SMOKING (of any kind!) EVER inside, and no smoking outdoors from June-October because of high fire danger. No open fires on the property. Always carry tire chains/cables during winter months.

Beautiful family getaway in the Big Trees!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a fabulous time at the Bluebird House in the gorgeous Big Trees! We enjoyed Easter weekend together with another family and their sweet dog. The home is very clean and spacious. We all enjoyed playing card games together in the game room, walking around the neighborhood, an Easter egg hunt on the sprawling property and a bbq on the beautiful deck. The homeowners were super easy to communicate with and very punctual with responses to questions we had and also let us know of concerns we might happen upon. The oven was not working but that didn't stop us from enjoying our Easter ham. Since we were notified prior to departure, we brought up our own roaster oven and the homeowner gave us a credit to our account. Thank you for being so gracious!! We chose the clean linen/towel option. It was so nice to not have to haul up our own bedding and towels.

We took a short drive to the Big Trees National Park and walked among some majestic giants. Then we hit Murphy's Pizzaria for dinner just off Highway 4. The pizza is delicious..best crust everrrrr! Our big guys raved about the calzones.

There was still plenty of snow up the hill at Bear Valley Resort. You can bring your own sleds and toys and play on hills off Highway 4 or pay 12-16 dollars to tube on their groomed hills. It was pretty busy and they couldn't get our group in for awhile so we chose the former option. We had a blast!!

Both our families enjoyed our trip so much that we are already talking about plans to come back in the summer!!

Thank you for sharing your home with us!!

Owner's Response: Dena, family, and friends, thank you so much for your gracious words. We try to make the Bluebird House feel like home to our guests. And communication is always key. We're very happy that you all had a great time and the area does have marvelous natural attractions. You, your guests, and your doggies are always welcome to return. Summer months in the Sierras are spectacular. We encourage you to come back during the height of the alpine wildflower season in late July. You don't want to miss the Woodchuck Basin at 8,000 feet when it is in full bloom! - Dave and Carol G., Owners.

Cozy home. Perfect for families

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the house very much. Had all we needed to enjoy the snow and nearby skiing. The TV/game room has a dividing door that can be pulled closed for those who want to stay up later once the kids have gone to sleep. :)

Great hosts

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the Bluebird House. Cozy, clean, great location...that made it 4 stars, but what elevates it to a 5 are the owners. Very responsive, understanding and welcoming. We reached out to them with questions on a couple of occasions during our visit and we received prompt responses with a clear interest and effort of optimizing our stay. Wonderful home, wonderful owners. Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Joe and family, thank you for the kind words. We enjoy that so many folks like to stay at the Bluebird House in Big Trees Village. And the weather cooperated finally to produce snow for you. It has been a tough season for snow! We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and appreciate your feedback on the couple of items that need attention. - Dave and Carol G., Owners.

Very Comfortable Cabin

  • 5 of 5

The cabin had everything our family needed – wi-fi, comfortable beds and sitting areas, cable TV, and a functioning/stocked kitchen. The owner/property manager was very helpful and timely with responses to questions. We were a little disappointed that linens were an extra charge because that’s something we’re used to being included in the rental fee, but it’s a service that seems to be commonly charged for as an extra in the Arnold area. Overall, we were very comfortable at the cabin and would be happy to stay there again.”

Owner's Response: Thanks for your nice 5-star review of the Bluebird House in Big Trees Village! We work hard to make our guests' stays comfortable, and you are always welcome to return. Since these reviews are read read by so many prospective guests, and are important to their decisions, we would like to clarify as much as possible the general Arnold/Big Trees/Dorrington area policy about bed linens and bath towels. The area has no inexpensive laundering services that owners can rely upon. The one professional service of which we are aware charges as much as $25 per bed and bath, plus a delivery charge. For 8 guests (6 beds3 baths) at the Bluebird House, that would add over $240 to the guest's cost for a weekend stay. That is too expensive, whether or not it is included in the nightly cost! As an alternative, we offer an Optional Bed Linens and Bath Towels service to our guests for an affordable $50 one-time cost for the complete stay. This is a flow-through cost to our cleaning person, and is actually less than we pay her. About 6 in 10 guests opt for our Linens/Towels service - mostly the larger, multi-family parties, and about 4 in 10 choose to bring their own linens and towels - mostly the smaller, single family parties. The point is we offer a choice. We will try to make this information more easily found in the initial cabin descriptions that are read by prospective Bluebird House guests. - Dave and Carol, Owners.

Great family friendly getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cabin for two nights and had an amazing time. We wish we had stayed a whole week! The house was comfy and well stocked. We took advantage of using the pool at the rec center and the kids loved the bunk beds. We brought food to cook and the kitchen had plenty of pots/pans, etc so that we could cook all of our meals. The deck was awesome and shady and we spent our mornings and evenings out there. We will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Thanks, Sonia for the kind words. You don't need a wedding to plan a return visit! The Big Trees / Dorrington area is lovely in the fall and winter also. Please come stay again! - Dave and Carol.
