About David George

We both grew up in Southern California but have lived in Northern California since our wedding 40 years ago. Our primary home is in the San Francisco East Bay and have owned our cabin in Big Trees Village since 1988. Our vacation rental home, the Bluebird House is just down the street from our own cabin.

David George purchased this chalet in 2013

Why David George chose Gold Country / High Sierra

The Bluebird House is spacious and can accommodate one or two families with ease, and is DOG FRIENDLY. The 5,000 foot elevation guarantees heavy snow in winter months and sunny, warm days during the summertime. We maintain an annual membership in the local Big Trees Recreation Center for our rental guests' use during the summer months. The Rec Center provides picnicking, a kids playground, ball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, and two swimming pools. There is a gate charge for daily use of the swimming pools per individual or family.

What makes this chalet unique

We welcome 1-2 small to medium size dogs, as long as you do not leave the dog(s) in the house alone. The large deck has a latched gate for containment of pets or small children. The large level lot is unusual for the hilly neighborhood. A gas BBQ is provided for guest use and there are snow platters and horseshoes available in the outdoor closet. The flat driveway provides easy access during winter snow months and the driveway is plowed during snow storms. A sunny bay window seat is a great place to read or enjoy the falling snow.

Please remove your shoes when you are inside the home. Absolutely NO SMOKING (of any kind!) EVER inside, and no smoking outdoors from June-October because of high fire danger. No open fires on the property. Always carry tire chains/cables during winter months.

Cozy, quiet retreat

Well equipped, cozy cabin perfect for a family vacation! Super close to Big Trees State Park, which is gorgeous. Loved it even in the rain! Perfect cozy fall vacation spot.

Great house, great services

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here for three days. We had wonderful time. The house location is great in the middle of the woods. It is pretty close to the lakes, park and river. The service is great as we receive all instructions from the ower in time. We will stay there again next time.

Great stay, peaceful.

  • 4 of 5

Loved the rental. Cozy home, beautiful deck to enjoy being in the woods, and close to Big Trees State Park for awesome sights. Everything about the house made it easy to cook, entertain ourselves, and have peace and quiet.

Only minor suggestions, garbage drop off was a bit further than we expected, estimated distance would be helpful, especially since we could not get a phone signal for gps for directions. And a couple of kitchen items would be extra nice, e.g., pitcher for iced tea, potato masher or hand mixer. But these were very minor and just small suggestions, not criticisms.

Owner's Response: Celeste, thanks for your stay at the Bluebird House and for your helpful comments. We will add a potato masher to the kitchen utensils. There is an iced tea pitcher but we noticed in cleaning after your check out that another guest had crammed it into the back of a cabinet, not easy to find. The directions to the Avery Disposal site are on the refrigerator door but we will check to make sure they include the approximate distance to the Center. Please come again soon. - Dave and Carol G., Owners.

Great house for families

  • 4 of 5

Great house for families. We had 2 familes of 4 stay and we had plenty of room for all of us. House is located close to big trees and about 30 mins from bear valley.

I would consider 5 stars if there wasn't an extra fee for the sheets and the added hassle of dealing with the trash on the way out. Other than those small items, it's a great place to stay.

Charming, quiet, cozy and clean!

  • 4 of 5

My family of four and our friends (family of 5) recently stayed in the Bluebird House in Dorrington. It was our first time renting a cabin and it proved to be a very good experience. The cabin was roomy enough for all 9 of us and yet had a cozy feel to it, very homey, warm and inviting. The cabin has been well maintained and had everything we needed for cooking, relaxing and entertaining. I do have two suggestions however. The two queen bed mattresses are very firm and a foam mattress pad topper may do wonders. Also, it would have been so nice if the trash could have been picked up for us by the cleaning crew since there is a $75 cleaning fee. The Avery Station for disposing of our trash is closed on Wed and Th and we left on a Wed so we were unable to dispose of our trash at the site. Other than those two things, it is a great place to stay-close to the Lake Alpine and Big Trees...beautiful grounds, fresh air and perfect temperature for July! We would definitely stay in the Bluebird House again! :)

Beautiful cabin

  • 4 of 5

The cabin inside and out was just perfect. We really enjoyed the large sundeck. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because we had a few problems that we were able to work around. We did contact the owner regarding a cracked coffee pot and were told a new one would be brought over soon. We never did receive a new coffee carafe while we were there. Upon our arrival we noticed a note on the game room door that leads to the outside deck that says "do not use this door". On our last night we realized the door never locks to the outside. This was a little concerning but we were checking out the next day.

Overall this was a great cabin and if these items get fixed we would definitely stay there again if we were up in that area.

Owner's Response: Yes, a new coffee maker was on the delivery truck last Friday and then we received a message that the delivery could not be made - because of a "natural disaster"! We can't figure out what that means because the weather and roads were clear. It is replaced now. We notified our Open/Close/Cleaning service to make sure all doors are locked. Thanks for the feedback.
