Overview

About the property

2 Bdm 1.5 Bath. Kayakers Dream! Birdwatching Galore! On the River and Beach!

A Beautiful and Serene Retreat On the Banks of the Ten Mile River-- and Only a Stone's Throw from Miles of Beach and Dunes. Open floor plan, fully outfitted kitchen, 2 Bedroom, 1.5 Bath, Sleeps 6. Queen bed in the master bedroom, daybed with trundle in the second bedroom and a queen size sofabed in the living room. Fireplace, laundry room, large deck with Traeger Smoker/Grill. WiFi throughout the house.

The house is on the river about 500 yards from the Pacific ocean. You can kayak from the front yard either up-river or toward the ocean. Up-river is absolutely breathtaking. The estuary is a Marine Sanctuary and it is totally protected. It stretches east for several miles and has many side channels and inlets to explore. As you head deeper east into the estuary it transitions from brackish to fresh water. It can often be sunny along the river when it's foggy on the beach, and you can easily find great places to swim and picnic.

If you venture toward the ocean you'll find two exquisite beaches to the north and south. The beach to the north, Seaside Beach, is strikingly beautiful with huge rocks and caves. It's also one of the few State Park beaches that allows dogs! There is a large and deep cave at the extreme north end of the beach that is accessible when the tide is right. The cave tunnels completely through the bluff and leads to a secret cove with its own beach. Ten Mile Beach is to the south. It is a huge complex of dunes and is part of MacKerricher State Park. It's great habitat for the endangered Snowy Plover. The beach stretches south for at least six miles. It's incredible for both jogging or hiking. It's covered with sand dollars, shells, and all kinds of other marine life. Also, there are very few people on the beach. You will almost always have the entire beach to yourself. It's very romantic. The hiking is amazing, and the birdwatching is world class. Bring a good pair of binoculars!

Directly in front of the house is the river. Every year families of harbor seals haul out of the river every day and sun themselves on the riverbank. Typically, the seals are swimming around in the river in front of the house. Momma seals and their pups frolic together all the time. I've watched momma seals nursing their pups many times just sitting on my deck. There are also otters, and more birds than I can name: Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Egrets, Osprey, Mallards, Canada Geese, Snow Geese, Mergansers, Grebe, Belted Kingfisher, Cormorants, Pelicans, Caspian Terns, and even a Bald Eagle! The list goes on and on.

If you've got a canoe, kayaks or bicycles bring them. However, I have a there-person canoe and a kayak that guests are welcome to use. There is a great logging road along the south side of the river going east. It's paved, and there is virtually no traffic. The road goes along the river for 5.2 miles before you reach a gate. It's perfect for biking, jogging or hiking.

If you like the outdoors, there are many things to do without ever leaving the property. If you start to crave civilization, the Town of Fort Bragg is only 15 minutes away. There, you'll find plenty of good restaurants, galleries, a movie theatre, Glass Beach, the Skunk Train, Noyo Harbor, North Coast Brewery, and many other attractions unique to the area. Another 15 minutes to the south along Highway One is the Village of Mendocino. This charming hamlet is filled with fine restaurants, shops, and the natural beauty of the beaches, bluffs, and Big River. Both towns are worth exploring.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please bear in mind that booking requests which include only one weekend day will likely be declined by the owner. This is especially true during Holidays, Spring Break, or any period of high demand. Such reservation requests reduce the number of full weekends the house can be available to other interested renters and are disfavored for that reason.

About Clay Brennan

I'm a Superior Court judge for the county of Mendocino. I preside over the Ten Mile Branch court located in Fort Bragg. I have lived in Mendocino County since 1991 and have never stopped being enthralled by the natural beauty that surrounds me here. I purchased the house in May of 2015 and still can't get over my good fortune. I love this place!

I grew up in Palo Alto, CA and went to college and law school in San Diego. I love to spend time with my family, travel the world and play music with friends.

Why Clay Brennan chose North Coast California

The location of this property at the mouth of the Ten Mile River is unique. You can kayak or canoe from the front yard--20 yards away from the front door. The entire estuary is a spectacularly beautiful marine preserve and there are miles of dunes and beach on either side of the river to explore. The hiking, biking and kayaking are superb. A typical day starts with birdsong in the morning and ends with a dazzling sunset over the Pacific. There is adventure for when you're feeling bold, and a fireplace for when you want to curl up by the fire with a book. You'll feel right at home in this welcoming house. It's equipped with all the modern conveniences and everything is clean and in good working order.

Beautiful beach house!

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a beach house in Fort Bragg this is probably one of your best options. I had a magical time with my family here. Being able to take the kayak and canoe out at any time was amazing and it felt like we have the whole Beach to ourself. All the amenities are very nice and everything you need is there and more. Thank you very much for sharing your beautiful property with us.

One of a kind

  • 5 of 5

This rental is the best! In an amazing location with great views and great wildlife viewing but not too far from town. We really enjoyed being able to canoe to the beach! The house is very comfortable and well maintained. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a very relaxing vacation in a special setting.

Lovely get away!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed this cottage immensely! The kitchen was clean and we'll stocked. The canoe and kayak were huge hits with our teenage daughters. The water is close, the wildlife entertaining. We saw seals, otters and dolphins off the beach. The beach was very quiet, most people went to the dog beach nearby. The house was well kept. It did faintly smell of wet dog, so if you have allergies or a strong aversion to the smell this might not be the right place for you. We did hear something under the house or possibly in the wall of the master bedroom one night but it sounded small and harmless. We saw deer and foxes from the porch. We would definitely recommend this property to people travelling with dogs and older children. This is probably one of the best smaller side rentals in the Fort Bragg area.

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

This place could not be any better. It is well stocked from kitchen appliances to watercraft. We thoroughly enjoyed using the canoe and kayak and loved that it saved us from having to rent equipment. We also loved waking up each morning to observe the unfolding wildlife scenes right out our door. The location is incredible right on the estuary and you feel like you are surrounded by nothing but nature. It is very private and cozy. We never wanted to eat any meals out because we preferred to be at the house.

The house itself was in great condition and very clean. It did not feel like a vacation rental but instead like our own home. The only downside was that we eventually had to leave.

Top Notch Rental, Worth every penny.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at Clay's place Memorial Day weekend 2017. The description of the property and pictures don't do it justice! Friday, on our arrival, we stopped in Fort Bragg to check out Roundman's smokehouse, we ended up with two hangar steaks that we cooked on the grill that night, tasty! On our drive up to the property we saw two fawn on the side of the road. As we walked up to the property we saw sea lions swimming in the water right out in front of the property(100-200 feet, you can really see them well with the telescope!). The same night of our stay we walked up to the meadow and happened upon a deer! BTW, a glass of wine and the view from the meadow was amazing! On the way back from the meadow we happened upon the deer again! She was about 10 feet from us, it was incredible, we felt bad that we scared her, but it was awesome! The second day of our trip we decided to go into Fort Bragg and check out Piaci's pizzeria, it's just like everyone says; small, cash only, but DELICIOUS!(Highly recommend!) The drive to Fort Bragg was bout 12-15 minutes, coupled that with the views on the way there, the drive was a piece of cake! We also stopped at the North Coast Brewery shop and grabbed a souvenir as well. Sunday we decided to take the canoe and do some exploring. We're not experts by any stretch(I think we've both been on a canoe twice between the two of us LOL) but it was a piece of cake. We got in, pushed away from the shore and started paddling up river. It was so peaceful and serene. It was almost fake, like everything was staged. We saw ducks and vultures everywhere. Vultures were even eating lunch right on the rivers' edge! We paddled up until the river was really shallow and decided to head back(total trip was bout two hours) We were really hoping to see some otters and thought we were going to be disappointed, but nope! On our way back they were swimming towards us! Between the wildlife and the views it was a very cool experience, it was amazing. I wish we could post some of our pictures to really drive the message home, but if you want a place to stay and be worth every penny this is it. Oh and I didnt even talk about the house. The house was well lit with all the windows and skylights. The deck is huge. The bbq and smoker were great! The kitchen had everything you need. Water was hot almost immediately in the shower. The Fireplace and bed were really nice. Clay was awesome, between the wine, notes and instruction couldnt ask 4more!

Typically, the seals are swimming around in front of the house. In the winter, the seals patrol the waters hunting for salmon and steelhead headed upstream to spawn. If your lucky you might get to watch a pursuit. It's a high speed acrobatic affair with lots of splashing and excitement. When they're not hunting the seals frolic together and care for their pups.
