About Jennifer & Wally Szunko

Our foursome has lived in this house since 2004 and never tire of the amazing vistas and sunsets. We love to travel and often use VRBO when we go to the mountains skiing or to California for golf. Traverse City has been home for Wally and Jennifer long before they met here in the summer of 1990. In 2010 the Szunko family started the first bike and kayak rental business at Clinch Park Marina in downtown Traverse City--The River TC. Although the business was sold to a friend, the kids have spent every summer working there and refer to it as the "center of the universe". The River TC is the hub of activity for locals and tourists and the venue for a variety of events.

Jennifer works for a book review magazine, Wally works in the auto industry (when he's not golfing), Aleksa attends DePauw University, and Cole will finish high school in 20016 and hopes to attend university in Europe. All four love being outdoors, playing tennis, golf, running, biking, skiing, snowboarding, and socializing with friends around a great meal or s'mores at the campfire.

We have a wide circle of friends all over Northwest Northern Michigan so if you have a question about the area, we can find the answer. We are happy to assist with reservations, tee times, setting up transportation, or suggesting activities.

Our home has been described as "simple and comfortable, like your favorite pair of jeans". We want our friends and visitors to feel relaxed and at home so let us know if there is anything you need. You can join us for a glass of wine on the deck in the evening, build yourself a campfire in the fire pit or kickback on your private patio.

Jennifer & Wally Szunko purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Jennifer & Wally Szunko chose Northern Michigan

We spent ten years in an English Tudor on the east side of Old Mission Peninsula less than a mile from our house on the Leorie Vineyard. We loved living on the peninsula but the only one that really enjoyed the beautiful sunrises was Jennifer. When we were presented with an opportunity to sell the house the timing seemed right to make the move to the sunset side. It was a quick turnaround which didn't leave time to purchase our next home so we opted to rent a camper and put our belongings into storage. The kids had a fantastic summer of camping! In late July we walked into the house on Leorie Drive and immediately fell in love with the view, the granite fireplace, and the California architecture. The kids fell in love with the tree swing. Ten years later the top to bottom renovation is nearly complete and we have never had a moment of regret. Now in the summer of 2015 its time to share our space with others!

What makes this apartment unique

The house sits on the edge of the Leorie vineyard where grapes are grown and turned into one of Michigan's finest red wines at Black Star Farms winery. Beyond the vineyard is West Grand Traverse Bay and a view of downtown Traverse City in the distance. On Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons throughout the summer you can see and sometimes hear the local sailboat races. There is always something interesting coming into view: boats, storms, wildlife, hot air balloons, fireworks, the Blue Angels, and more.

Better than we hoped!

  • 5 of 5

Jennifer and Wally were exceptional hosts and their place was better than we had hoped. Plenty of space for Meg and I to really spread out and relax. Only drawback is the bike ride back to their place from downtown TC is mostly uphill! Ugh! View from their back patio is beautiful at sunset!

Owner's Response: We enjoyed meeting you both! It's true, the gorgeous view means an uphill climb at the end of your day. :)

Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place for my husband and I to explore Traverse City for the first time. The location was perfectly convenient for everything we did- Sleeping Bear Dunes, vineyards, bike riding, kayaking, and downtown TC! Everything was clean and well stocked- Jennifer even had snacks and a bottle of wine for us when we arrived. The views of the sunsets from the patio were amazing and better than the pictures. I would highly recommend this rental.

Beautiful Setting

  • 4 of 5

The property was beautiful, and Jennifer couldn't have been any nicer. She saw to details that we haven't experienced before for example, snacks and a bottle of wine waiting for us upon our arrival. The location was perfect for enjoying Traverse City, the peninsula, and Leelanau. The only criticism is although the kitchen was large and functional there was no oven. However, they do have a convection microwave that can be utilized for some items. We would definitely utilize this property again. Thank you for the great stay!

Terrific location, great hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed here over a busy summer weekend in Traverse City--it was the perfect location for us with our toddler. The property has an amazing view of West Grand Traverse Bay--the photos do not do it justice. The rental we stayed in was spacious, clean, and had all the amenities we could need, including some locally made snacks. Jennifer, our host, even pulled out some toys for our son to play with while staying there, which was really thoughtful (and our son LOVED the toys). The rental is stocked full of games & books for all ages. We drove into TC for activities like going to the beach, renting bikes, etc. It's a short drive to this rental from the downtown--very easy to navigate.

I would highly recommend this property to others.
