La Terrièrre is a Normandy Thatched Cottage originally built in 1802. It is set in its own secure grounds in a quiet location (in the heart of the Calvados ‘bocage’ countryside) and is reached by a private lane. The Cottage sleeps 8 comfortably in 4 separate double bedrooms. One of which is on the ground floor with en suite facilities - wheelchair accessible.
Garden area of 1500m2 with lawned area, stone barbecue and small orchard.
The cottage is South facing, set in its own secure grounds with parking for for more than four vehicles. Being centrally located, it is ideal for exploring Normandy, enjoying renowned French cuisine and a relaxed way of life. For the more energetic Golf, Sailing, Fishing, Swimming and even bungee jumping are available nearby. Bayeux, Mont St Michel, D Day beaches etc. are all within easy driving distance. Take the ferry to visit Jersey or Guernsey. It has excellent road connections with the toll free motorway only 3 miles away. The village of Campeaux is 2 miles east and the large town of Vire is 7 miles south.
The garden is pleasant and suitable for small children and has a good barbecue too..The house is small but we 4 people weren't too cramped as we spent lots of time outside. The kitchen is small with little storage.Cooker is good,so is small dishwasher. We needed to do some cleaning on arrival, mainly dusting and sweeping but also the fridge. The outside bedroom might be a problem on wet days.It is suitable for disabled provided its location is acceptable. It is very basic and suitable only for one person.t has its own en-suite but no window or ventilation so it needed the electric fire on in the evening to dry out,the leave the door open for ventilation. There are two double bedrooms upstairs, besides the childrens 2 single that is reached through one of the doubles. The childrens room smelt very musty, probably because it had been shut up for some time. The stairs are quite challenging for less mobile people being steep and of open wood construction. One double has two awkward steps from the landing. It is definitely best for elderly or disabled people to use the downstairs outside bedroom. There are no bathing or shower facilities upstairs only a toilet and hand basin..The other toilet and shower facility is accessed through the kitchen!.Overall, good weather is a must for full enjoyment of this property.
When we arrived we were struck by the peace and tranquility of the place. We did however find the cottage a little difficult to find, but with the help of the caretaker we eventually got there.
The cottage was well equiped, warm and cosy and the beds very comfortable.
If you are "married to your mobile or i pad" this is not the place for you as there is very little if at all signal strength, but if you want a real "get away from it all holiday",with no constant ring of phones, l cannot think of a better place to be.
Many thanks to Denise and Nigel for the use of their lovely cottage.
From the moment of booking I knew this was going to be a great holiday. Denise was lovely on the phone and the joining instructions were simple and easly to follow.
It is very easy to get to from the motorway and the village is fairly close by for "pain" in a morning!
The cottage has a stunning log fire which was great on an evening and added a little bit of magic. I love the beamed bedrooms and having a dishwasher and washing machine just made life so much easier.
This countryside location is really quiet and given how easy it is to get from the UK I have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful little cottage.
Fantastic location for visiting the Bayeux Taperstry and all the D-day beaches. It's a lot cheaper staying in land and driving out to the coast and you get the mix of both. This cottage was really really well priced given that we stayed in Peak season.
My husband and I will be back next year and taking the whole family as it is a very large property.
If you want a secluded and quiet base for your holiday you have found it here. No traffic noise, no aircraft and only the odd tractor. You’ll find the roads are in a very good state of repair and generally clear in this region which is a plus factor.
The cottage is full of character and we found it quite comfortable.
We chose this property because it has three toilets, one upstairs and two downstairs. My partner’s father who is 85 went with us and he doesn’t manage stairs well so we felt that he could have the downstairs en suite bedroom and all would be well.
To access the downstairs bedroom it is necessary to go out of the property from the lounge and walk two or three yards to another door, which gives access to the downstairs bedroom. My partner’s father didn’t like this arrangement very much as he rises early and it was late September and the mornings ‘cool.’ He chose to use an upstairs bedroom, which was not ideal.
Whilst we were there, we needed the help of the cottage’s handyman. He responded quickly and he’s English, so don’t worry about communication!
Although it was late in the season, we were still able to eat our evening meal outside on two or three nights. We did enjoy the fact that the garden is not overlooked and has a set of outdoor furniture to seat the biggest family. As the one who does the cooking, I was just a little disappointed that the kitchen was not as well equipped as I would have wished.
The log-burning stove in the lounge is very efficient and easy to get along with. We felt that the cottage was well placed as we wanted to visit the D Day beaches and Mont St Michel and this was easily achievable from this base.
Another plus point was that there are hardly any charges for parking in the area! Even Bayeaux, which was heaving with tourists, had free car parking. All in all an enjoyable holiday.
Centrally located, it is ideal for exploring Normandy, Bayeux, Mont St Michel, D Day beaches etc. are all within easy driving distance. Nearby Golf, Sailing, Fishing, Swimming,Hot Air Ballooning and Adventure Park (inc Bungee Jumping)are available. Located adjacently to the Vire Valley there are some lovely walks starting from Bures Les Monts.
