About Lisa Melendez

I was born and grew up in Scotland and have been in USA for 33 years. I am a proud Military Spouse of 23 years and a supporter of The Wounded Warrior. A Wee Beach Cottage was proud to host a young Marine Wounded Warrior and his fiancee earlier this year and we plan on doing this as a yearly event. My home is in Hampton Roads area in Va . I came down to Salvo in 2014 to watch my sons go kite boarding for the first time and fell in love with Salvo and its friendly folks and beautiful quiet and sandy beach. I decided Salvo would be a great place to get my family together when we could and enjoy our time together in a relaxing setting. I have 2 grown sons a grown daughter and a new wee Grandaughter. Exciting times!

I would like to say a huge Thank you to all our guests that stayed this our first summer renting. You have all been so wonderful and I appreciate you very much. Thanks so much for the awesome reviews! Looking forward to a great second season and we thank everyone for their support and confidence in renting this humble Wee Cottage !

Lisa Melendez purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Lisa Melendez chose Hatteras Island

I bought this property in Aug 2014. Looked at it and knew it had to be named A Wee Beach Cottage. It was snuggled in between all the huge beach houses around it and thought it was just perfect. It is only WEE but has lots to offer.

It is very close to the Beach (390 ft) and a short bike ride or drive to the Sound. Great for Surfers and Kiterboarders. Perfect to take a short walk to the beach and enjoy your first cup of morning coffee and watch the sunrise ! Sit in the screened in Porch and read your book or look at the thousands of stars on the deck at night. Amazing!

A Wee Beach Cottage Is perfect for a cozy getaway, small family vacation or for adventure seekers.

What makes this cottage unique

I found A Wee Beach Cottage on one of my trips to the area and decided it was a perfect location and size. So close to the beach and Sound, shops and restaurants short walk or drive. Our street is safe for kids to ride their bikes or skateboard, mostly only traffic from guests staying in acommodation on street. Everything needed for a perfect vacation in a friendly neighbourhood of Salvo. Hatteras Colony. So much to Do and See in the area.

Peaceful, quaint, and a perfect hostess

  • 5 of 5

Located in the town of Salvo, North Carolina, this adorable cottage was perfect for my family of six. My mother-in-law came with my husband and me and our three young children (6yo, 2yo, and 1yo). We walked to the beach every day, met a few locals who are super friendly and willing to give advice/recommendations, and truly relaxed during our stay. We loved that it was quiet and not so busy like some of the other towns more north and more densely populated.

We brought some groceries but also headed to Food Lion (15 min south driving) and the Dollar General (<5 min north driving) when we needed to stock up. We cooked almost all of our meals and had everything we needed to make pasta dishes, pizza, breakfast burritos, French toast, BBQ (charcoal grill provided). Lisa, the owner, provides free coffee and a wonderful selection of teas, with coffee maker (and filters and creamer!) or electric water kettle.

We enjoyed local ice cream in Avon (10 min south driving), the Salvo Day Use Area (<5 min Soith driving), the free ferry to Ocracoke Island (45 min south driving), and also visited Cape Hattaras lighthouse (25 min south driving). We stayed over the Easter holiday and there was a free egg hunt for our kids to enjoy despite a storm passing in Nags Head at the Kitty Hawk Kite store (30 min north driving).

What made our stay most enjoyable was the attention to detail Lisa provided. She bought buckets for each of our kids to enjoy in the sand, some plastic Easter eggs that they later hid shells in, and had age appropriate games available for them to play with. We also took advantage of the beach cart to haul the two beach umbrellas she had, and although we did not use them, there are beach chairs available to tow along as well. We brought our own beach towels and shampoo/conditioner, but Lisa provided body soap for both the inside bathroom and outdoor shower which has hot water!

There is a washer and dryer in the kitchen area, making clothes washing convenient before our trip home. A green binder with useful information is also provided to help you acclimate to the house and surrounding area. From the moment we entered it was thoroughly clean which made us feel right at home right away. We tend to be picky about this detail, but she did not overlook it one bit :)

Darling beach house in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

With just a few steps from the beach, Lisa's house was perfect for our weekend getaway with friends. There are two rooms (1 full/queen) and 1 bunk bed, as well as a pullout couch. You could easily fit 5-6 people. The home had everything we needed, including a grill and beach toys. It was cutely decorated and very clean. Even though we visited in the off-season (September), the weather was perfect for spending a relaxing time at the beach. We accidentally forgot our duffel bag in the living room, and Lisa is doing everything she can to make sure we get it back. A+ service and hospitality. Thank you for everything, Lisa!! We want to come back soon!

Recommendations:

- Great coffee at Forbes (~3 min. drive)

- Delicious fish tacos at Buxton Munch (~20 min. drive)

Very charming, clean cottage

  • 5 of 5

WOW we loved the Wee Little Cottage and the owner made sure our stay was great. My wife and I have stayed in this same area for 19 years straight with her large family. We were down a month + ago but we wanted to stay a few days with our two dogs and just each other. Lisa made it all possible and worked with us. It was great so much was provided even treats and a towel to dry off our dogs. Very, very clean and simple just what we wanted. We plan to stay again next year. I wish there were more of the older cottages left in this area as nice as this one. Owner did a great job in fixing up the cottage just enough to keep the old charm. It was decorated inside very well thought out. Lisa stayed in touch with us before and during our stay to make sure all was going okay. Thank you for letting us stay in your Wee Little Cottage and bring our dogs along. Most relaxong and easy trip to the Rodanthe we have had in years.

Charming, relaxing, beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Wee Beach Cottage the first week of Sept, 2016. The cottage is extremely clean, bright, well equipped and also very cozy. Furnishings were comfortable and stylish. Bedding, towels and many added perks were provided! The owner, Lisa, went out of her way to make our stay enjoyable, ensuring we had everything we needed to wind down and relax! I would highly recommend staying at this affordable cottage. A short walk to beautiful beaches and many attractions are a short drive away.

Small, but lots of love inside

  • 4 of 5

The 'wee cottage' is small but carefully updated and furnished to make a visitor feel right at home. The owner has been very thoughtful about what a visitor might need, and very helpful in providing information about local food, restaurants and so on. The only minor drawback I found was the outside of the house--the deck and porch are a bit worn and the grass needed cutting. But my dog and I settled right in, made it home, and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Perfect place for us.

We had a great time at Lisa's house. She was a great host and the place was clean and not far from the beach. It was cozy for our family of four and had everything we needed. We would definitely come back.
