Belgrade Lakes, ME
Echo cottage is a private lake side family camp, that feels like a tree house surrounded by old growth pines. This lakeside cottage on Great Pond has two fun bunk rooms and a master with stunning lake view. The cabin has an open floor plan with fully stocked kitchen, fireplace, reading nooks, large porch, grill, hammocks, dock, and mooring. It is a charming, cozy cottage with antiques and skylights, perfect for reading and lake sports. The cabin is unhooked, no phone, TV, or internet (you can bring your own computer, hot spot, or phones--there is reception). The woods are filled with wild flowers and life (loons, bald eagle, moose...).
Belgrade Lakes is a beautiful town surrounded by 7 lakes and ponds. Great Pond is the largest in the chain and a wonderful lake to explore. The area is great for hiking, fishing, canoeing, golf, relaxing under a tree, and swimming in the lake.
The place was perfect for us. Rustic enough to feel like a camp, but modern and comfortable so we were never roughing it. Great bay windows to sit and read and watch the lake. Fine propane grill kept us fed every night. Eagles and owls soared overhead. Loons called us onto the lake. Cabin had a canoe and kayak that were just perfect for splashing about. Dock made entry & exit from swimming easy.
Town of Belgrade Lakes, nearby, had everything we needed, including freshly baked pies & breads and fresh lobster. So we just relaxed --took in all that extra oxygen from the trees.
Neighbors were close enough to be there if we needed them, and far enough away that we never really saw them. Was able to totally disconnect, read, sleep, eat, swim, paddle, and relax. Our pups froliced, ran up and down the road, quite literally bounding. I've never seen them happier.
Just what we were looking for.
It all felt ideal: the cabin with its live-edge wooden cabinetry, the broad plank floors smooth against our bare feet, the giant evergreens standing inches from the back deck, and the haunting calls of the loons across the lake's broad waters. My two daughters (16 and 20), husband and I spent a blissful week at Echo Cove and we can't wait to return. We swam in the lake off the private dock, ate lobsters on the deck, and hiked in nearby Camden. My youngest daughter set up her easel along the shore and captured the light glancing off an anchored boat while my oldest daughter napped in one of the hammocks under the cool green trees. The cabin was stocked with not only the essentials (i.e. French press coffee pot, dishwasher, microwave as well as a full set of pans, silverware, and serving dishes), but included, also, delightful surprises: tiny wooden birds dangling from the skylights above the bay window's seats, unexpected nooks in the upstairs' bedrooms, shelves of books and board games, and brilliant sunrises visible from the master bedroom's wide windows. Beautiful.
This property was perfect for us (my husband and I plus two adult sons visiting for a few days)! It is in a wonderful location overlooking a quiet cove with its own dock to swim off, sun ourselves, tie up the boats. There are even two huge hammocks overlooking the water.
The cottage is charming, airy, light, and filled with authentic Maine antiques (functional and comfortable; not the kind you worry about). We like to cook and really appreciated the kitchen. The dining table is even expandable. That was nice, since my sister's family is nearby and we were able to cook for a crowd. The deck large and overlooking the water. We made good use of its gas grill, oversized table and comfortable sitting area. The most special thing for all of us was the two daybeds tucked into the enormous window seat. Its hard to explain how they beckoned to us, but falling asleep looking up at the tall pines and out at the lake leads to a very restful nap! The master bedroom is lovely with plenty of storage space so we didn't have to live out of suitcases. Our sons wished they were still 10 years old, because the two bunk rooms are really awesome.
Nina had taken care to make sure everything was ready for us. The neighbors are friendly, helpful, near enough but not too near! We really hope to come back next year... maybe earlier in the season so we can see the woodland plants in bloom (were those Lady Slippers?).
