About the property

3 Bedroom, One Bath Quaint Cottage On The Hill--Walk Downtown and Bring the Dog!

Three Gables is a quaint cottage on the Hill that offers all the modern conveniences. There are 3 large bedrooms (1 king, 1 queen and 1 full), a galley bath with tub and shower, a three-season screened in porch overlooking the yard, a new deck in back with a BBQ, cable, internet and a cute kitchen. The backyard is huge and private with a forest feel and completely fenced. Enclosed dog run right off the bedroom. There is cable, wifi and a DVD and many movies and games for the kids.

The screened-in porch is furnished with a comfortable wicker couch, chairs and table for dining. There are 2 additional dining areas-one in the dining room and one outside on the backyard deck.

The spacious living room offers flat screen tv and dvd, with lots of room to lounge about. There is internet access, and washer and dryer.

The kitchen is always open! If you choose not to eat in one of the many fantastic restaurants, cook at home with utensils, pans, etc. or grill outside on the patio. The knotty pine walls are light and airy to give an open feeling. The park-like setting in the backyard gives a beautiful view and privacy.

Family and friends will be able to relax in the large living room and 3 season room; plus downtown is a short walk away. You won't need to worry about parking.

We provide start-up paper towels, toilet paper, kleenix, dish detergent, laundry detergent, soap, garbage bags and coffee. We suggest you bring beach towels, sun screen and bug spray.

The run for the dog is right off 2 bedrooms so you won't need to go far if someone needs out at night....just open the door!

We love antiques and art and a cottagy feel so we have tried to provide that for our quests. Hope you like it also.

As we said, dogs are welcome but their doo-doo isn't.. Please pick up after your dog. There will be a $25 charge if we have to do it. There is a pet fee of $50 for the first dog; $25 for each extra up to 3 total.

About Chris Peterson

Ernie and Chris are native Nebraskans that retired to Saugatuck, Michigan in 2008. They enjoy boating, being with their grandchildren, being with the wonderful friends that they have met and indulging, probably too much, in the wonderful restaurants. Ernie works on his vintage cars and Chris is on the City Council. They still find plenty of time to enjoy the beauty of Saugatuck, and say every day "I can't believe we live here."

Chris Peterson purchased this house in 2012

Why Chris Peterson chose Michigan

Three Gables is our backyard neighbor. It is a beautiful wooded lot with lots of run to run, play games, cook out or just catch some sun.

Saugatuck offers many types of rentals but we preferred the cottage atmosphere. Three Gables was build in the 1930's and has the beautiful crown molding throughout. The screened in porch has a wicker table and chairs and sitting area that overlooks the front yard and perfect for reading a book or playing cards. We loved the large bedrooms and huge windows. Everything has been newly painted along with all new electric. The backyard is lovely so we added a new deck so you could enjoy it more. And most importantly, we live on the "Hill" and walk downtown and wanted our guests to have the same option. Plus we love our dog and travel with her, and we wanted our guests to also be able to bring that important part of their family.

What makes this house unique

The large rooms with large windows make the bedrooms light and airy. We like large beds so we wanted to offer both a queen and a king. The full sized brass bed is in the red room, which has a nautical theme. We love art and antiques and have tried to incorporate those throughout the home. We wanted to furnish Three Gables in the same type of furniture that we love in our house.

Loved it; perfect for girl's long weekend

  • 5 of 5

4 of us drove to Saugatuck from Milwaukee last spring. We stayed in this adorable cottage, and had an amazing time. It was ideal for what we needed...clean, well appointed, and decorated with flair. It is within easy walking distance to everything "downtown". We had no problems, and enjoyed ourselves immensely, even on the rainy night, where we all hung out on the 3 season front porch, doing puzzles and playing stupid phone games. The owners had some good restaurant and shopping advice, which we appreciated. I just wanted to write a glowing review, as I am considering renting this house again, and saw the ridiculous rude review from the "cold" renter. I would stay here again, no question. We loved it.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We were pretty depressed after that review...especially as all of our texts said just the opposite. Guests like you make it all worthwhile and we hope you will be our guests again.

Great location and very nice

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in this rental. The location was perfect (a five minute walk downtown) and the fenced in backyard was perfect to let our dog run around. A big bonus was the board games left out, we had a riot playing them. The kitchen was equipped with enough basics that the six of us were able to cook a great dinner. We'd stay there again in a second.

Nice house for the summer

  • 2 of 5

This was a nice house for the summer. Unfortunately we stayed over the Christmas holidays. It was COLD, very cold, we had to purchase a small space heater because the house was 62 degrees every morning. There was a mouse trap, and huge electric trap like you see outside of big box stores. This was very concerning. It took over a week to get the damage deposit back. The front steps were made from treated wood, and very slippery. Thankfully my family made the best of it, and downtown Saugatuck was beautiful as always.

Owner's Response: On Dec. 22, I send the following message to Sue: Hello Sue. We are on our way to Omaha. We salted Three Gables before we left so hope it is good when you arrive. If not we have a friend who will come scoop. If you would like to come in on December 23 please do so as all is ready. Again if the weather doesn't cooperate and the steps are bad, we will have someone come scoop." In addition, in the instruction page, I again said if anything is not to your approval, text or call us immediately and we will fix it. After this, I feel sandbagged. Especially since she sent me a text on Dec 27 that said: "This message is from Susan B...we have left your house and had a wonderful time. Thank you very much." Again, totally sandbagged. The furnace and wiring are new and the degree setting is right there available for guests to use. When we checked on the 27th when we returned, it was nice and warm. The 3 season room is never warm in the winter. As to the cages, all of which are outside, this cottage was built in the 1930's so not everything is sealed up tight. We always put the traps out when it gets cold as we want no visitors. The backyard backs up to a forest setting and we do get critters sometimes. We always keep the trap, especially for squirrels, and pay a company to manage it. She did ask for the damage deposit back sooner, but we keep it 7 days in VRBO which gives us time to do the cleaning and get the laundry back, to see if there was damage. VRBO maintains the damage deposit fund and sends it out always on time. I guess I don't know what else to say except that I believe that we have been marked down for things that aren't true, especially based on her own text.

Three Gables was just as described, and more

  • 5 of 5

My extended family and I spent a wonderful autumn weekend at the Three Gables. The cottage was charming, immaculately clean and so very functional. What a great layout with the "gathering" area in the center of the cottage and the three bedrooms on the outside. The yard was huge and beautifully landscaped. It was an easy stroll into downtown Saugatuck, but was far enough away to be peaceful and quiet. All of our needs were taken care of, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time at Three Gables. Thank you so much!

Great place, helpful owners

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful place to stay, very easy walk to town. Bed was comfortable. Nice living room with low table suitable for board games. Muskoka room had a nice glass table great for cards or puzzles. Owners helpfully ran over some dishwasher detergent when we mentioned we couldn't find it. +1 would stay again.

A Pleasant and Peaceful Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a lovely time at this peaceful and comfortable home. The front porch is airy and comfortable and the back patio was a great space to BBQ and enjoy the summer. Our dog really enjoyed the spacious and fenced yard. We loved our time in Saugatuck and had a wonderful experience staying at the house.
