About Dan Wearsch

My wife Jennifer and I met in college at the University of Toledo and settled in Northeast Ohio where we raised three great children. While the lure of Ohio has escaped our children , it has been a great place to live, work, and play all of our lives. As we embark on this next journey , we look forward to new experiences and making new friends among the locals and vacationers of Abaco.

Dan Wearsch purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Dan Wearsch chose Hope Town

Jennifer and I have had the opportunity to travel over the last 30 years and found ourselves in the Bahamas on more than one occasion. When I discovered the cottages we now own, it was to rent them much like I hope you will, to create a memory of renting a boat, staying on an island removed from hustle and bustle, relax and see where the week would take us. Turns out we love Lubber's and the Abaco area and are fortunate enough to be able to share it with you and hopefully you will create your next greatest adventure in life!

What makes this cottage unique

Pictures can only give you a sense of what you will experience while staying at the cottage(s). I can say that when we rented the boat out of Marsh Harbour, I knew we were in for something special. As we neared Lubber's, and brought the boat to a slower speed, I spotted the dock from the pictures and couldn't wait to tie her off. As we walked the dock to the beach and up the walkway to the cottages, it was like nothing I had experienced before. Taking in the view, the location tucked away just enough to seclude you, the realization hits, you're not in Kansas (or Ohio) anymore, and it's great!

Such a cute little cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Hummingbird Cottage for a week and could not have been happier. The place is adorable with 3 beds (and a "couch" that could easily sleep 2 if needed). The decor is really cute and we felt very welcome during our stay. There is a full kitchen with toaster, coffee pot, microwave and the basic necessities that you'd need to cook a meal. There is also a washer/dryer which is nice to have. The island itself is pretty remote with only 1 restaurant on it, so just keep that in mind going into your stay. Great proximity to neighboring islands and the private dock makes it easy to get around. Highly recommended! As others mentioned, there is wifi, which can be spotty at times, but you're on a remote island in the Bahamas - go outside instead!

Owner's Response: Thank you Kelley for the review. Jennifer and I are glad you and your family had a great time. I do try to convey the remoteness of Lubber's to potential renters. It's helpful to have the feedback you gave to future renters. I love the "go outside instead" finish ! There is so much the area has to offer. It makes you come back. Dan & Jen

Loved the quaint cottages, clean and nice. Docking was protected. Expect no service.

Would have been 5 star but was nearly impossible to get a hold of handy man. Lost power, lost AC, and worst of all lost fresh water. Each probably an easy fix but with no way to know we couldn't diagnose the problem. Ended up leaving day early, having to go potty in the bushes while being swarmed by mosquitos, doing dishes in the ocean, and trying to take showers at the neighbors outdoor shower got old after 4 days. Trash was never picked up so we had a stench with maggots right outside our door. Too bad because it has great potential.

From the moment we arrived the blood pressure dropped .... my wife and i celebrated our tenth anniversary and so glad we chose hummingbird. From the owner Dan to the innkeeper Chad , everyone was so helpful and the cottage was perfect. thanks guys!!! the island is beautiful and the people are super friendly .Can't forget "Rigi"..great island dog who actually was a personal tour guide.. no kidding.. visited Hope town which is a must. rented a great Albury 20 from Jay and Samantha at waterways and visited some great deserted beaches to snorkel and picnic and just chill...If anyone has ever had the thought of that perfect little cottage on an island this is it. We'll be back for certain. Douglas and Teresa Okuszka

Hummingbird - What a wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was adorable, well-kept and clean! We had a great stay -- loved the little house, the dock, the beach and all that came with it. :) The inside was well stocked and the upstairs loft was super fun for the kids. The beach was great to have to enjoy the water and the wildlife. We had turtles under the dock every morning. The dock was well taken care of, too, so it was super easy to tie up the boat each night. We will definitely be back for another stay!

Edgewater FL

A lovely cottage on a beautifully island with native vegatation that is abundant and impressive

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was built in the last 2 or 3 years using traditional Bahamian cottagae techniques and architecture. It is funky and adequately equipped. Quite spacious.

You must have a boat in order to enjoy the surrounbding islands and provide transportation.

Tahiti Beach by Tilloo Cut is a stones throw away. One of the best beaches in the Abacos and a favorite meeting spot.

The power can be iffy, not the owners fault. Bring plenty of bug repellent.

Car: not necessary

You can enjoy snorkeling and fishing right off the dock, or jump in your boat and go island hopping! The cottages are a 10 minute boat ride to historic and quaint Hopetown on Elbow Cay. Guest will fly into Marsh Harbour International Airport. Renting a boat is necessary to get to Lubber's and for all transportation. You can receive a 10% discount from Island Marine and Jeff will do a great job of taking you through the process and even pick you up in Marsh Harbour at Calcutta if you choose.

Lubber's Quarters is a cay that provides a great place to make your home base to explore the Abaco area. There are cool beaches to discover on the island by foot or simply relax on the private beach 150ft from the cottage. Jump in your boat and head over to Man O War, Elbow or Guana for some sightseeing. There are so many things to see and do in the area! The nice thing about Lubber's is it is peaceful to come back at the end of a day of exploration and relax and just take it all in. There are many amenities available to our renters via boat. When staying on Lubber's you are on an island of only 80 or so residents many services and businesses are available by boat. This is an adventure and part of the experience.
