Overview

About the property

1700 sqft Moderate size home, 2 bath, Amazing river front patios.

A Family paradise at 3225 feet elevation nestled in the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains! Located just seven miles from the Plumas county seat of Quincy, California. Here is where you will find this lovely home on the banks of Spanish Creek. Situated just below the historic old resort, mining community, and railroad town of Keddie. Positioned within viewing distance from our home is one of the seven wonders of the Western Pacific Railroad, the famous wye bridge trestle. The “Wye” and town were named for Arthur Keddie. Keddie was an engineer who pioneered and surveyed the route for the railroad through the Feather River back in 1909.

Fast forward to the 1960s when Keddie was being transformed into a resort by realtor Clarence Arthur English Jr. who had purchased the town in ’57 with the goal of making it into a first class resort destination. One of the features that Mr. English developed was the “Swimmin Hole’ which were a series of stone stairs leading down to patios and built in stone barbecue pits on the banks of Spanish Creek.

More than 50 years later the beautiful rock work and patios still exist and in fact have been reborn for today’s generation of families. This wonderful setting with its modest home is available now to be enjoyed by young and old alike.

The home is a fully equipped, modern, and cheerful. It boasts three private sleeping areas. The master bedroom has a large closet, a queen bed, and it's own private bath. The large master bath includes a beautiful claw foot tub for relaxing, a separate private room with a large modern stand-up shower. Another sleeping room offers a double bed with antique dressers for storage. This room also has its own door into a full bath. The front of the house has another sleeping room that is ideal for children. It currently has a futon and a large blow up Aero Bed is available. Off this room is the laundry with a washer and dryer and storage area.

The home has a fully stocked modern kitchen with refrigerator/freezer, cook top, double ovens and a dishwasher. The counter area also claims two high backed stools to accommodate seating at the kitchen counter.

Off the kitchen is a sitting area for relaxing and enjoying the pictures and history of Keddie Resort in its heyday of the 1960s. Oh and the sofa is also a sleeper that can be made to sleep two additional adults or children as the need might arise.

The dinning area has seating for six, while the living area has a large sofa and love seat just right for viewing the hi-definition large screen television that is artfully hidden when not in use in the large decorative wall cabinet and book case.

Out the French doors by the kitchen and sitting area is a covered porch that spans the entire length of the house. Seating is not a problem in the numerous chairs, the outside bar, and bar stools that adorn the porch.

About Brent English

I am a long time resident of Alaska, but Plumas County, Quincy, and especially Keddie has always held a special place in my heart. I moved to Keddie from Los Angeles as a boy. I visited Keddie a few summers while my father was transforming Keddie into a wonderful resort. I finally moved to Keddie with my mother and my siblings and attended my last four years at Quincy Junior Senior High School. Soon after I enlisted in the Army. I was eventually sent to Alaska where I have resided since..

Brent English purchased this house in 2013

Why Brent English chose California

Keddie always was extraordinary to me. As a teen I worked for my father and his strong-willed foreman Charlie whom both tried to instill some semblance of a work ethic in me. During my last summer before my senior year in high school I worked loading rock, carrying rock and setting rock. Much of that work was at this site that at the time was Keddie's "Swimmin Hole". This place has always been magical to me. I saw it again for the first time in 45 years in 2012, it brought me to tears of joy.

When the opportunity to purchase this property arose, I knew that I wanted a chance to again see this place restored to its former beauty. When I was here as a young man the home was not here, only the patios. The house gave me the opportunity to more intimately share this destination with, my extended family and friends as well as a place that could be enjoyed by new generations.

What makes this house unique

This locations offers the opportunity for guests to relax in a private beautiful river-front settling away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Some of the activities that might interest our guests are: Train Spotting, Bird watching, Fishing, Hiking, Swimming or Sunbathing

Here is a thought, consider English Oaks for your next family reunion, or for a wedding or wedding reception.

One of the unique qualities that has always drawn me to this place was the trains. Yes they can be loud and frequent at certain times, but that is what I truly enjoy. Sitting on the back porch late in the evening, listening to the sounds of a freight train laboring slowly across the Keddie wye trestle is a genuine joy for a train buff like me.

Totally Awesome

  • 5 of 5

We went up to the area for a wedding. We didn't want to leave for the wedding the area was so peaceful and relaxing. Sitting in a chair on the river with our feet in the water was awesome. the views are incredible. The caretaker was super awesome and helpful as they are next door. House was awesome- clean- comfortable. We only wish we had a week there not 3 days. I would definitely go back for a longer stay. It was perfect- we had a brunch on the tables on the patio and it was just lovely.

Beautiful, spacious, meticulously maintained creekside gem!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 7 days at English Oaks with 5 teenagers. The house was even lovelier then the pictures gave it credit. Beautifully renovated, every room was immaculate and stylish with local antiques. Kitchen new and well stocked, bathrooms clean and master bath spacious. Host had fresh flowers throughout the house which were lovely. Best of all the terraced creek side location for swimming, tubing, fishing. My husband caught 3 trout one morning from the patio. Extra bonus during a week when temps were in the 90's the house had air conditioners! In the evening the cool breezes and train whistles were perfection. Absolutely adored the house, and teens were ecstatic that we had direct TV and great WIFI! Only one slight fix it issue was master bedroom east facing window needs a darkening blind or curtain as we were awoken every morning by bright sunlight. Definitely will be back the house is a real treasure❤️👌🏻👍🏻

What a wonderful Oasis!

  • 5 of 5

We had to spend almost 1 month in Quincy and were looking for a property that could sleep 8 and serve as a place to entertain additional guests. This property looked good and ended up being PERFECT! After long days in town we would return to the house and decompress. This place is well appointed and we didn't have any problems or need to add onto any items, excepting personal items. Ember and Chris went about their necessary daily maintenance while being incredibly respectful of our privacy. We would return here when we need solitude and a long term residence.

Hidden Treasure

  • 5 of 5

We rang in the New Year at this incredible treasure in Keddie with our wonderful friends. The drive up was beyond beautiful on Saturday. I have to say when we pulled up we weren't sure we were at the right place (hidden treasure is on the inside) better than the pictures and there's even another room that can sleep an additional four people. We experienced snow and woke up to even more of it on Monday. The home itself has a lot of charm, decor is train themed as reflected by being able to see the Keddie Y from the back of the house. Hearing the trains the whole weekend was fantastic. The home also has plenty of historical references throughout, again adding to the charm of the house. You will not be disappointed by choosing this VRBO, we don't visit many twice but we would surely like to experience this place in he spring or summer. It's likely we will be back, perhaps even for a girls scrapbooking weekend, we'll see. This is also a home to completely check out. Don't expect to be electronically connected - there's wifi, but there was never a real connection for any of us. We welcomed being unplugged. Look no further and book your stay!

Wonderful house in peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

We spent Thanksgiving week at this house and loved it! The house is well appointed and has ample space for many family members. All of the photos are accurate, but the house is even better in person. The fresh flowers were an added touch that we loved. Ember was very warm and friendly upon our arrival and answered any questions we had. We spent most of our time at our family's house in Quincy, but wish we had more time to be in Ember's lovely home. We'd love to come back in the summer and use the spacious deck and beautiful river. Thanks for a great holiday, Ember!
