About Carol Hurwitz

I have lived in the Marina Venice area for over 20 years and have owned this property since 2006, when I totally renovated it and brought it back to it's Cape Cod architectural origins. I am a real estate agent and have enjoyed making this place as pretty as it can possibly be. I love that this place is magical- I've been told the charm factor is off the charts. If that's what you are looking for- look no further.

Carol Hurwitz purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Carol Hurwitz chose Los Angeles

When this property came on the market in 2006 I realized these canal homes were precious and too cute to pass up. Even though this place needed a thorough remodel when we bought it, I saw the potential. This was one of the original bungalows built back in the 1920's when the Venice Canals were first developed by Abbott Kinney. By 2006 it had been changed over the years from it's original beach bungalow roots. It had taken on an unfortunate conglomeration of styles. Needless to say, I took it back to it's beachy Cape Cod origins and have never looked back. It fits so nicely into the Venice vibe. People love it!

What makes this cottage unique

Being right on the canal is about as rare as it gets in LA. Even locals don't all know that the Venice Canals exist. The boats at this property give you a chance to see Venice like you've never seen it before, from a canoe! You are only a block and a half from the beach, yet surrounded by multi-million dollar estates as well as cute beach bungalows cottages like this one. Another unique advantage of this property is it's proximity to it's little sister cottage next door which sleeps 4. Several families could vacation together for a lot less than the cost of several hotel suites. If you rent out both cottages you can sleep a total of 10 and have two kitchens, 2 bathrooms, laundry facilities, 5 bikes and 2 boats. All for under $600/night. It would be a great place for two families or several couples. But this is not the place for party animals- it's a quiet neighborhood so party animals, please keep looking, this is not the place for you.

An amazing find

  • 5 of 5

We booked this cottage originally so that we could be near the beach for a weekend. We had no idea this canal district existed and when we saw the cottage and the surrounding waterfront neighborhood, we decided to spend our time relaxing there instead of the beach. The evenings on the canal are truly beautiful and a neighbor a few doors down had a live band playing for all the neighborhood to enjoy. The quiet hours are strictly enforced, which was appreciated when it came time to wind down.

The cottage has PLENTY of room and amenities and the skylights were wonderful for natural lighting. We had such an amazing time that we've vowed to book this cottage again for our next trip!

A wonderful four day stay

  • 5 of 5

Last month, my husband and I were fortunate enough to rent Carol Hurwitz's one bedroom cottage on the Venice Grand canal. Upon our arrival, it was immediately clear to us that Carol takes great pride in her cottage. It was clean and very well-appointed, including a full kitchen. The furniture was comfortable and the king-sized bed very restful. We loved spending time on the deck which fronts right on the canal.

We also looked forward each day to strolling along the many canals and enjoying the water and the many homes with beautiful plantings and settings. The cottage is also only a short walk to good shopping, restaurants and Venice beach. Despite being near so much activity, our canal was quiet and relaxing. Carol was always available by phone for a question or suggestion. We truly look forward to returning in the future.

So if you are looking for a unique stay, this cottage is for you. Enjoy!

Well maintained home, prime location!

  • 5 of 5

Carol was wonderful to communicate with and was always available. She was pleasant and kind- would definitely stay there again. Her home was beautiful, clean and bright and right on the canal. Thank you Carol!

Good but needs some tlc

  • 4 of 5

There is no doubt that the cottage's location is sublime. However, it's in need of some tlc. The security door isn't sturdy and as a result is difficult to open and close. The cleanliness of the property was ok, but required us to call the house keeper as she failed to clean the most basic of things, including but not limited to the fans, base boards, the outside of the fridge, coffee table, sofa, and the outside deck. Nevertheless, she showed up promptly when requested. That said the floors are still in need of a good scrubbing so barefoot be ware. Of note the ac unit didn't work when we were there but the owner offered to fix it, albeit during our stay stating she knew of the issue. Despite any misgivings the space is rather large and open. Access to the canals is direct, though the water rises higher, or so it would seem, on the weekends, so take note if you plan to use the included boats. All in all it's a quaint cottage that just needs some work to better reflect the nightly asking price.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the thorough once over. Yes, we have some maintenance issues from time to time and with a cottage that is so heavily in demand we have almost no down time to attend to them! But we try. The security gate was swollen due to a recent rain, if the cleanliness was not up to your standards I'm so happy my cleaning crew was able to accommodate you immediately. Yes, the deck gets dirty since we have a lovely old tree that shades the deck, so try as we might..... during the fall (during this stay) leaves fall hourly and there is literally no way to make them stop! lol However, I take all these comments very seriously and appreciate the feedback and will keep trying to improve. Thank you!

Beautiful home, fantastic location...

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed four nights at this tropical oasis! Truly idyllic. ...yet only 1 1/2 blocks to Venice Beach! Walked to the beach each day...beach chairs in the home made laying out in the sun very comfortable! We've stayed at hotels on the beach ....at more than twice the price of this home...and this home on the Venice Canals is a far better option.

Serene, Beauty and Comfort!

  • 5 of 5

Had a beautiful extended weekend at this location. Ages ranged from 13 to 65 and everyone enjoyed it. It was lovely having the paddle boats to see the homes and architect of the Venice Canals. A friendly neighbor even allowed us to try his boat. Walking distance to the active Venice Beach Speedway or a lovely short walk through the Venice canals for dining choices. We liked not having to race out in the morning to look for breakfast, instead we had coffee and pastries on the patio and enjoyed the morning sun. This home is roomy and worked for the 6 of us, even with one bedroom and one bath, there is a couple of extra mirrors hung which was helpful for everyone to get ready. It was easy to settle in like it was our own home. There is a small convenience store a block away. Also Marina Del Rey was a very short drive, where we enjoyed brunch aboard a yacht (horn blower) and Santa Monica was another great destination we enjoyed. Overall everything from the home, location and owner was a 10.

A+ shout out to Carol for her Awesome hospitality and helping us to get settled. It was a pleasure meeting you.
