Herb Cain

Some of the comments our guests have made are:

- “Amazing views!”

- “The photos don’t do it justice.”

- “The Filbert Steps are so romantic.”

- “I loved waking up to the wild parrots in the morning.”

In this well-loved city, Telegraph Hill is San Francisco’s most charming neighborhood. Offering spectacular views of the Bay and its bridges, the San Francisco skyline, and the East Bay, Telegraph Hill couples Bohemian history with walking-distance convenience to Chinatown, North Beach (the heart of the Italian community and the 1950's 'beatnik' heritage of Grant Avenue), Pier 39, the Embarcadero, and the Financial District/Union Square.

Within this special neighborhood lies the jewel: the Filbert Street Steps. Historic and much-photographed, the Steps are the soul of Telegraph Hill: quiet (there is no vehicular traffic), a favorable 'micro climate' (the City might be foggy but sunny on the Steps), with verdant flower gardens and the famous 'Parrots of Telegraph Hill'. Because of this uniqueness, houses on the Steps rarely come on the real estate market; they are passed from generation to generation or snapped up by the neighborhood residents.

Here is your chance to stay in a unique Filbert Steps property, a three-unit building with magnificent Bay and City views designed by noted architect Henry Hester. 2 units are immediately available. Both are two-story apartments, with a bedroom overlooking a living room (with wood-burning fireplace) and kitchen/dining area. These units were combined in the 1960's as the 'bachelor pad' of actor George C. Scott in the movie, 'Petulia', but are two separate units again...as the architect had intended.

These units appeal to different visitors depending on when they are going to be in the unit.

Filbert Steps View:

If you are going to spend the day hanging out on the Filbert Steps, this unit is for you. This is perfect for the visitor who wants to relax during the day and enjoy an amazing view of the Filbert Steps, Coit Tower and the San Francisco Bay.

City Lights View:

If you are going to be working all day and want a place to unwind and enjoy the views at night, this unit is the definite choice. Imagine coming “home” and relaxing in the living room looking at the lights of the Bay Bridge and then falling asleep with a view of the city lights (specifically, the Transamerica Pyramid.) These are great views during the day too, but they really sparkle at night.

Although each apartment is perfect for a couple, the living room sofa in each converts to a Queen bed. Fully-furnished with modern art from the owner’s extensive collection (including canvases from Stanford University artist-in-residence Dani Tull), bed and bath linens, TV/DVD, audio system (with CD library), a fully-equipped kitchen (except dishwasher), and other amenities.

The building has no parking, but street parking is available. San Francisco’s iconic Coit Tower is only steps away from the building’s front door and offers additional parking.

The 39 Coit bus stops a few doors away and makes a loop from Fisherman's Wharf through North Beach and up to Coit Tower all day. A laundromat is 1 block from the building. The shops and restaurants of North Beach are a 3-block walk.

“San Francisco has only one drawback – ‘tis hard to leave.”

Rudyard Kipling

Fantastic View + Quiet & Cozy!

  • 5 of 5

First of all, Patrick (the landlord) is AWESOME and takes great pride in recommending amazing places to eat and visit around the neighborhood, which we loved! We rented the "city lights view" unit, and it was very clean and comfortable. Loved falling asleep in the loft to the view of the city lights! The flowers were in full bloom, so we kept the windows open to take full advantage, and loved waking up to the parrots in the morning. We were also blessed with perfect weather, so the views were breathtaking!

Just the adventure we were looking for!

Perfect hideaway off the beaten path! Not for the out-of-shape though! Lots of up hill walking! Views were very nice. Apartment was fully stocked, sheets smelled wonderful and simply a great place to stretch out after a full day of sight seeing. Patrick is very helpful. Thanks for the Kurig coffee--nice treat! We'll be back!

Amazing location

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I traveled to SF for our son's weekend birthday celebration and fell in love with the Filbert Steps unit. We have been to SF many times and have stayed at some of the best hotels in downtown SF but, this unit and Patrick has convince us to reevaluate our options when staying in SF. The location is the best place in SF to start each day since it is convenient to anywhere in SF and a short walk to all the wonderful restaurants in North Beach. The views are incredible and Patrick is a wealth of information on the history of the entire area. Whenever we plan our next trip to SF it is this unit we will book, even though our son has a beautiful condo for us to stay with him, we still prefer the privacy of this Filbert Steps unit. Thank you Patrick, our stay was amazing.

Would not want to stay anywhere else

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the City Lights apartment and it was perfect. This was our first trip to San Francisco and this put us in a great location to soak up the best of the city. Everything in the apartment was lovely and it was perfectly set up with everything we could possibly need. We were able to walk to all the areas we wanted to see and take the bus home when our feet got tired. While all the information at booking was very complete, Patrick's visit added a wonderful personal touch and was very helpful. Thanks so much for making our visit to San Francisco so wonderful!

Perfect location - wonderful host!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I visited San Francisco to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The stay at Telegraph Hill was perfect. Patrick was a wonderful host. The location has marvelous views of the area - especially the Bay Bridge and the light installation. We couldn't have asked for anything more. Patrick accompanied us on Saturday to the farmer's market and gave us a local's perspective and history of the area - stuff you won't hear on the other commercial tours.

We highly recommend the location and can't wait to visit again.

Amazing Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I traveled from MA to San Francisco for a week-long vacation. When choosing where to stay, we wanted to be situated in a place where we could walk to most of the things we wanted to see. This apartment couldn't have been more perfect. Right on top of Telegraph Hill, we were able to walk around most of the city and easily get back, although there is a bus that runs right up to Coit Tower if you are tired. We were in the City Lights View unit and being able to see the Bay Bridge at night from our window was awesome. Everything in the unit was clean and we felt much more comfortable than we would have in a hotel. The kitchen allowed me to make breakfast before heading out every morning. Patrick helped us a great deal with recommending where to go for dinner or sightseeing. We had an amazing time visiting the city and I would definitely recommend staying in this beautiful apartment.
