About Terri Scallon and Dwane Atkinson
Hi, I'm Terri and I have lived here for 20 years. There is nowhere else I would want to be! When I met the man of my dreams 14 years ago we began to create our vision of a small farm property. We have 3 large horses, 2 miniature horses, a goat, 5 chickens, 2 dogs and one cat. The deer and bear are nearby and we respect each other's space :) I am an Equine Facilitated Therapist and a family therapist. My husband is a finish carpenter so he has added some nice touches to the cabin. We are so blessed to live here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, Canada - it's definitely a little piece of paradise! The ocean is 2 km down the road and winter sports like snow-shoeing and cross country skiing are just 30 minutes up the mountain behind us. We both love the forest so we have kept lots of trees on our properties which offers privacy, quiet and wildlife. We are both animal lovers (guess that's obvious lol!) who enjoy the simple pleasures of life, a good home-cooked meal (easy for me to say since Dwane does all the cooking), walking the dogs or going for a trail ride, puttering around outside until it gets dark. If you are looking for a break from city life you'll love our little neck of the woods :)
Terri Scallon and Dwane Atkinson purchased this Cabin in 1998
Why Terri Scallon and Dwane Atkinson chose Sunshine Coast D
Together Dwane and I have homesteaded this property. No one lived on it before and it was treed and covered in blackberry bushes. Any trees that were cut on the property were milled on site and the wood was used to build our house (so the trees never left the property which makes us happy!) We wanted to share our little piece of paradise so we acquired a log cabin for others to come stay in. The cabin was placed so that it has its own acre of privacy, yet it adjoins the remaining 3.5 acres. It's a great place to rest and relax, go out and have fun, then come home and rest and relax again. We mean for the cabin to be your home while you are here. While It is private, should you need anything we can attend to it right away. If you would like to do an Equine Therapy session while you are here let me know and we can set that up although there is an additional cost for that. It's a great way to learn about communication, trust, boundaries, leadership ability all while having fun in the great outdoors! We can also take you out on a private nice, slow, easy trail ride at an additional reasonable cost. There's so much to do here on the Sunshine Coast, especially if you want to get away from the city and enjoy a much slower pace in the beauty of nature.
What makes this Cabin unique
We have kept our prices on the lower side to encourage families with children to come and enjoy this awesome vacation spot. So much to do around here! Listening Horse Ranch Retreat is also a great place for a private couple's weekend or for a quiet personal retreat. And if you want to visit the farm animals you are welcome to for a small donation. You can also book horse assisted therapy session or time with the horses and we will share our rates with you if you're interested. We have 2 friendly dogs and your dog is most welcome here :) If you would enjoy an artsy, outdoorsy kinda place with lots of beaches and trails and cultural events this is the place to be!

Lovely cabin, location. Awesome place to relax! Very well equipped with anything that you need.
Fantastic spot to relax :)
Mission accomplished! So glad you had a relaxing time 😊 Come back soon!
Amazing kind and generous people amazing location . Very clean, peaceful and relaxing.
I came to the cabin on an urgent basis. My previous hotel booking backed out at the last second due to renovations and I had nowhere to go with my dogs , and was travelling for work. That was when I found listening horse ranch on the VRBO website . One of the few places that truly is pet friendly . I felt very welcome and instantly felt at home. My dog even found a new best friend in their dog. Sad to have to leave. I hope I get a chance to come back.
Perfect place to get away!
The cute cabin is a wonderful place to spend time away from it all - clean, comfortable, cozy and the perfect location to relax and unwind. And bring your pooch!! Rancher and Maisie are great play mates - what fun!! Friendly hosts to top it all. :-)
We loved having you and your dogs are always welcome!! So glad you liked it. Rancher was sad when you left!
Escape from the day to day.
We booked this cabin for a weekend getaway from the day to day with our two dogs.
Terri and Dwyane were extremely accommodating starting off with a warm welcome with farm fresh eggs!
The peace and quiet on the property are like nothing we get to enjoy living in the city. With a short drive to explore either Gibsons or Sechelt we also took advantage exploring around the cabin and walking trails with the dogs.
My favorite part was just feeling relaxed with the dogs, they're both well behaved but I find trying to travel and find accommodations with them can be quite stressful. Either they get locked away or on strict leash policies. At this cabin, they had an instant friend in Rancher who came to greet them soon on arrival and right off the bat they were sprinting around the property, rolling around and playing which quickly led to some tired out pups. Every morning the dogs would go out and look for Rancher or Rancher would be at the door waiting for them.
For me, this was a perfect place away from home to unwind with the whole family (dogs included) and truly not have anything to worry about. We 100% plan on visiting again!
We are so lucky to have our dog Rancher! He is our best ambassador and he loves it when he has dogs to play with! Dogs are most definitely welcome!
Perfect Cabin Getaway
Terri and Dwane have prepared for your every need in this perfect cabin. The kitchen is equipped way beyond your expectations, you can dine or relax on the spacious deck, the bed is comfortable and warm, the bathroom floors are heated, and the bathtub is wonderfully large and deep. If you can't find peace in this amazing set-up, perhaps you didn't bring it with you.
We were surprised and disappointed to read some reviews speaking negatively about the iron content in the bathwater. Iron and sulfur in natural spring water have many health benefits, and thousands of people all over the world travel great distances to soak in hot baths that have high natural mineral content. Terri and Dwane are very up front about having UV-filtered, iron-rich spring water in the plumbing, and they provide lots of bottled water for drinking. The slight iron aroma and the gentle tint to the water are reminders of how lucky we are to have such great mineral baths all to ourselves in such a beautiful cabin in the woods.
Google "iron sulfur mineral bath health benefits" to read more. It's not a bug, it's a feature.
Yes over the past 20 years in our own home Dwane and I have benefited from bathing in the natural mineral water we have here on our acreage and we love that we can share that with those who stay at the cabin retreat!
Good location. The hosts are very kinds. You can find everything you need. However, it would be nice if there is a fireplace and bathroom need a bit fixing. There are lot of waters left around the edge of the bath tub after shower. Overall, we're happy with the place.
We've considered having a fireplace but the insurance rates would cause us to increase our rates significantly so we decided against that, especially since most people come in the warmer seasons and wouldn't make use of it. And, yes, water can get on the tiles surrounding the tub when someone showers. Most people use a towel to wipe up after showering if they see that. It does no damage and is designed to be a large tiled roomy space around the double Jacuzzi tub.
There are a variety of music festivals throughout the summer and the very popular Writer's Festival in August. Stroll along the Davis Bay Beach seaside walk at sunset. Hike/bike the trails right off the property. Come pet our horses. Little secret beaches you can go to that only the locals know about. Lots of great restaurants, some with live music. 2 cinemas. 1 Playhouse. Local pools with hot tubs. Artist's "Purple Flag" tour. T'sain-ko Museum of the Sechelt Nation. Scenic drive up to Egmont to the Skookumchuk rapids and stop at the Iris Griffith Wetlands educational centre.Take a boat tour to Desolation Sound. Hike through Smuggler Cove Marine Park. Go kayaking. Visit the Persephone Brewing Company, the producer of our very own local beer! Visit Chapman Creek hatchery just 3 km. away. Hike (or ski in winter) Dakota Ridge or the Tetrahedron. Or just laze on the cabin deck and read book or soak in the Jacuzzi tub :)
Additional pricing information
No extra charge for children under the age of 18. The additional per person charge only applies to adults. The pet fee is a one-time fee and is not a daily charge. Electrical RV hook up available for $20 per night. Should we experience severe water restrictions as we did in August of 2015 and in August 2017 we will have to ask that you use the shower only (unfortunately not make use of the double tub) and minimize your use of water as we are on a well. The water is safe as it goes through a UV filter that kills all bacteria.
