Hurley/Kingston Woodland Home

Bedrooms 2
Property type lodge
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

Minimum Stay
2 - 3 nights

About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4

DeWitt Lodge sits on a ridge amidst 4 acres of woods just outside Hurley, NY, in the heart of the Hudson Valley. The house is newly-renovated and has a mixture of modern and antique furnishings, great colors and interesting curios, it is very comfortable and is an ideal getaway location for two people, but will sleep up to four people.

Just two hours from Manhattan, it is an ideal base to discover the beauty of the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains.

The area features beautiful scenery, many outdoor activities including hiking and biking, rock climbing, sailing, swimming holes and tubing. Museums, art galleries, historic homes and great restaurants are all within easy reach by car. We are less than 10 minutes from Kingston with its vibrant restaurants and arts scene & the exciting new 'Smorgasburg' Saturday market (runs until the end of October); Rosendale, High Falls and Stone Ridge are 10 minutes away; New Paltz, Mohonk, Woodstock and Rhinebeck are 20 minutes away and the Shawangunks and Hyde Park are only 25 minutes away. We are also only 25 minutes from skiing at Belleayre Mountain.

The house has one bedroom with a queen size bed and direct access to the bathroom. There is also a reading/sleeping loft with a full size bed, accessed by a steep, narrow staircase.

The master bedroom has a wood burning stove, private porch and bluestone patio. There is a large living area with a sofa, TV and DVD player, a turntable with a great selection of old vinyl, and some great speakers and room to dance. There is a dining area with a table for 4, a fully-equipped small and funky kitchen with its own breakfast porch, and a bathroom with a tub and shower.

There is plenty of outdoor space with a table and seating as well as a gas grill. No landscaped gardens deer eat everything I plant!

The house is set back from a country road by a 150 ft. driveway in a rural neighborhood of small houses outside the historic village of Hurley with its beautiful old stone houses. It has a very woodsy cabin feel to it and is not really overlooked by any other homes; it feels quite private without being isolated. The woods are raw and inhabited by many Deer and the occasional Bear. The Thruway is about 1/4 of a mile from the house but cannot be seen.

A car is needed as there is no local public transportation nearby. There are local taxi services available if visitors were to arrive by bus in Kingston.

A lovely home in the woods

  • 5 of 5

The rest of the reviews pretty much sum it up -- this is a charming home that is convenient to many destinations in the Hudson Valley. It's lovingly decorated -- super homey and stylish at the same time. For me, the bedroom was particularly special, with big glass sliding doors on the walls parallel to the bed an enclosed porch at the end of the room. It felt like you were surrounded by the forest as you lay in bed. Also, the wood-burning stove is delightful and warms up the house so well. The Wi-Fi connection is great, though, for the life of me, I couldn't seem to access any channels besides Netflix and Amazon through the smart TV interface.

The forest out back of the home is amazing. We came with our dog and it was so idyllic walking out there with her. Even though it was late fall, it felt lush and green, between all the conifers in the forest and big old beautiful rhododendrons surrounding the house.

The only downside for me was that it was challenging to cook in a kitchen with a very small stove and counter-height fridge, though I kind of expect to have to make adjustments in a vacation home. It's just something to keep in mind if you're planning to cook a lot of meals.

This is a super special house, and I was so glad to be able to stay there. I felt very appreciative to Tim to make it such a great experience for us.

Nice Property BUT

  • 3 of 5

It was a nice place to stay, but according to the description I expected it to be more rural, more of a cabin. It has a road in front of it and had busy traffic.

Owner's Response: Kathy I am sorry that the house did not meet your hopes and expectations. It does show the location of the house on the map, and it clearly states in the description that the house sits 150ft back from a county road, unfortunately your review makes it sound like the house sits right on a main road which it does not! I hope you managed to enjoy your stay and relax despite these things. Tim

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We rented this cottage from Tim for 3 nights in October. The cottage is better than the pictures show. It is so clean and comfortable. Perfect for a couple . Fireplace in the bedroom is a nice touch. It is old and rustic in a nice way .

Tim was fantastic to deal with.

Very private setting but close to everything . We loved it !!!

Cozy, comfortable Red Cottage in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this house. We were two parents and our 9 yr old son. He loved sleeping in the loft overlooking the living room. There is a nice stereo system with CDs and vinyl. The entire house was spotlessly clean and is very nicely decorated. The beds were very comfortable and the linens and towels were fresh and clean. Lots of outdoor seating. It is only a few minutes into Kingtson where we went to visit family. Lots of things to do in Kingston (great farmers market on Saturday) and in the surrounding areas.

My companion and I arrived on a rainy Friday night after a harrowing commute from Boston. We were so happy to enter Tim's home and be greeted with a bottle of bubbly, the fans going to keep the house cool, and some soothing music playing on the local radio station. I absolutely love Tim's taste in decor. I felt as though I were in a Buddhist temple - the deep colors of natural wood, oranges, greens and purples, the layers of textiles and comfy pillows, the gorgeous pieces of art and table lamps. I loved it all! I especially loved the bedroom, with an extremely comfortable bed with lovely linens and a wood stove at the foot of the bed, which I enjoyed using on a chilly Saturday morning as I sipped my coffee. We also loved listening to Tim's records on the turntable and we played several games of Scrabble, which Tim stored in the audio closet as well. We did have a rainy weekend but toward the end of our stay the sun did come out and we were able to take a walk in the woods behind the house with our two little dogs, who also had such a blast and who loved Tim's doggie treats. We spent a lot of time just relaxing but we also ventured out to spend time in Kingston and Saugerties. Both towns were really quaint and interesting, each with some fantastic restaurants (we ate at Black Eyed Suzie's in Saugerties and Boiston's and Duo Bistro in Kingston - I'd recommend all three). On our way out on Monday we went to the riverfront and brought the dogs to Ship and Shore where we met a very nice waiter who gave the dogs some bacon and fresh water. Our whole stay was really lovely and we hope to come back in the winter time. Tim's house must be extra cozy surrounded by snow! Oh! We forgot our doggie gate so Tim texted me right away and I was able to come back to grab it, and also get to meet Tim in person. Super nice guy! Thanks for everything, Tim!

Lovely lodge in the woods!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the lodge. It was beautiful inside and out, the bed was comfortable, we made dinner there easily, the loft bed was adorable and the sitting area out back was a lovely place to have morning coffee and watch the sun move through the trees. Tim was a great host, without showing up (which we appreciated), and the whole weekend was really relaxing. We had no trouble driving to Woodstock for lunch one day and to New Paltz the next day on our way back to NYC. Our only suggestion would be a brighter light option in the living room. Overall, definitely recommend the place!
