Overview

About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4

DeWitt Lodge sits on a ridge amidst 4 acres of woods just outside Hurley, NY, in the heart of the Hudson Valley. The house is newly-renovated and has a mixture of modern and antique furnishings, great colors and interesting curios, it is very comfortable and is an ideal getaway location for two people, but will sleep up to four people.

Just two hours from Manhattan, it is an ideal base to discover the beauty of the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains.

The area features beautiful scenery, many outdoor activities including hiking and biking, rock climbing, sailing, swimming holes and tubing. Museums, art galleries, historic homes and great restaurants are all within easy reach by car. We are less than 10 minutes from Kingston with its vibrant restaurants and arts scene; Rosendale, High Falls and Stone Ridge are 10 minutes away; New Paltz, Mohonk, Woodstock and Rhinebeck are 20 minutes away and the Shawangunks and Hyde Park are only 25 minutes away. We are also only 25 minutes from skiing at Belleayre Mountain.

The house has one bedroom with a queen size bed and direct access to the bathroom. There is also a reading/sleeping loft with a full size bed, accessed by a steep, narrow staircase.

The master bedroom has a wood burning stove, private porch and bluestone patio. There is a large living area with a sofa, TV and DVD player, a turntable with a great selection of old vinyl, and some great speakers and room to dance. There is a dining area with a table for 4, a small and funky kitchen with its own breakfast porch, and a bathroom with a tub and shower.

There is plenty of outdoor space with a table and seating as well as a gas grill. No landscaped gardens deer eat everything I plant!

The house is set back from a country road by a 100 ft. driveway in a rural neighborhood of small houses outside the historic village of Hurley with its beautiful old stone houses. It has a very woodsy cabin feel to it and is not really overlooked by any other homes; it feels quite private, but please be aware that it is not an isolated cabin in the middle of nowhere! The 4 acres of woods are raw and inhabited by many Deer, and the occasional Bear. The Thruway is about 1/4 of a mile from the house, it cannot be seen but you will hear it in the distance at times when outside, not enough to be a problem though.

Also, this is the country - there will be spiders, it's inevitable!

A car is needed as there is no local public transportation nearby. There are local taxi services available if visitors were to arrive by bus in Kingston.

A cozy, serene retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at the lodge, and I had forgotten just how lovely it was inside -- all the warm wood tones, jewel-toned furnishings, and beautiful little decorative objects around the house. It's a very soothing environment -- a perfect place to forget the stresses of everyday life.

The wood-burning stove in the bedroom is awesome, definitely a highlight of our stay both times, and the available wood provided was much appreciated. It's amazing how it can heat up the whole house. The bedroom, surrounded by big old rhododendrons and evergreens, is beautiful.

The sound system is great. And the newly added Roku makes using the TV a breeze.

The kitchen is on the small side but I managed to cook meals for two several times. And the supplementary fridge in the utility room is very helpful.

The location is great, close to all the retail offerings of Kingston and lots of hiking spots. If you're looking for a completely off-the-grid, middle-of-nowhere location, this might not be for you. But I appreciated the convenient location and proximity to stores, restaurants, etc. Plus, there's the natural beauty of the forested backyard just out the back door.

And just a random comment: It's so nice that this lodge has substantial curtains in the living room and bedroom. So many rentals have no curtains or really flimsy ones. I slept so well with the nice, thick curtains in the bedroom. Super comfy bed, too, with a variety of pillows to choose from.

Owner's Response: Thanks Nick, so glad you had a good return visit. The rhododendrons bloom over Memorial Day weekend, they are well worth a visit :)

Quiet and lovely, but convenient, too!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with a colleague when we came for a workshop at R&F paints. We stayed 3 nights. It was perfect for 2 people, and would also easily fit a small family. There's one main bedroom downstairs, a sleeping area in an upstairs loft, and a bathroom that opens to the bedroom and kitchen. We mainly ate out (there's a great area food scene, from diner to gourmet, ethnic and fusion), but had breakfast, tea and snacks in the kitchen. The kitchen is tiny but well-equipped, and there are pantry items, too (nice tea selection!). One of the nicest touches is a screened and glazed back porch off the kitchen (lovely spot for breakfast) and another porch off the main bedroom. Interior is heavily paneled in wood, so you feel like you're in a small hunting cabin. And the property is heavily wooded with great rhododendrons. Beds were comfy and warm, and furniture is nice quality. This would also be a great retreat for writing (dissertation or novel). Because the cabin has well water, our host had an ample supply of bottled water for drinking.

I would definitely stay here again, and hopefully will!

Small but well located

  • 4 of 5

Tim was a great host. We had everything we needed and the cabin was very comfortable. The place was chic but a bit small. It was very clean and quiet though, and we were able to get to Mohonk and other fun places quite easily. Thanks for a great stay!

Amazing

Everything was perfect. As we were leaving my 4 year old turned around and said "I'll miss you little red house in the woods".

Great time at an amazing property

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at this amazing little house. It's clean, well decorated, and private. Close to Kingston and Woodstock, we spent a lot of time enjoying the towns.
