Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday lodge in Hurley - DeWitt Lodge

2 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4

DeWitt Lodge sits on a ridge amidst 4 acres of woods just outside Hurley, NY, in the heart of the Hudson Valley. The house is newly-renovated and has a mixture of modern and antique furnishings, great colors and interesting curios, it is very comfortable and is an ideal getaway location for two people, but will sleep up to four people.

Just two hours from Manhattan, it is an ideal base to discover the beauty of the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains.

The area features beautiful scenery, many outdoor activities including hiking and biking, rock climbing, sailing, swimming holes and tubing. Museums, art galleries, historic homes and great restaurants are all within easy reach by car. We are less than 10 minutes from Kingston with its vibrant restaurants and arts scene & the exciting new 'Smorgasburg' Saturday market (runs until the end of October); Rosendale, High Falls and Stone Ridge are 10 minutes away; New Paltz, Mohonk, Woodstock and Rhinebeck are 20 minutes away and the Shawangunks and Hyde Park are only 25 minutes away. We are also only 25 minutes from skiing at Belleayre Mountain.

The house has one bedroom with a queen size bed and direct access to the bathroom. There is also a reading/sleeping loft with a full size bed, accessed by a steep, narrow staircase.

The master bedroom has a wood burning stove, private porch and bluestone patio. There is a large living area with a sofa, TV and DVD player, a turntable with a great selection of old vinyl, and some great speakers and room to dance. There is a dining area with a table for 4, a fully-equipped small and funky kitchen with its own breakfast porch, and a bathroom with a tub and shower.

There is plenty of outdoor space with a table and seating as well as a gas grill. No landscaped gardens deer eat everything I plant!

The house is set back from a country road by a 100 ft. driveway in a rural neighborhood of small houses outside the historic village of Hurley with its beautiful old stone houses. It has a very woodsy cabin feel to it and is not really overlooked by any other homes; it feels quite private without being isolated. The woods are raw and inhabited by many Deer and the occasional Bear. The Thruway is about 1/4 of a mile from the house but cannot be seen.

A car is needed as there is no local public transportation nearby. There are local taxi services available if visitors were to arrive by bus in Kingston.

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We rented this cottage from Tim for 3 nights in October. The cottage is better than the pictures show. It is so clean and comfortable. Perfect for a couple . Fireplace in the bedroom is a nice touch. It is old and rustic in a nice way .

Tim was fantastic to deal with.

Very private setting but close to everything . We loved it !!!

Cozy, comfortable Red Cottage in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this house. We were two parents and our 9 yr old son. He loved sleeping in the loft overlooking the living room. There is a nice stereo system with CDs and vinyl. The entire house was spotlessly clean and is very nicely decorated. The beds were very comfortable and the linens and towels were fresh and clean. Lots of outdoor seating. It is only a few minutes into Kingtson where we went to visit family. Lots of things to do in Kingston (great farmers market on Saturday) and in the surrounding areas.

My companion and I arrived on a rainy Friday night after a harrowing commute from Boston. We were so happy to enter Tim's home and be greeted with a bottle of bubbly, the fans going to keep the house cool, and some soothing music playing on the local radio station. I absolutely love Tim's taste in decor. I felt as though I were in a Buddhist temple - the deep colors of natural wood, oranges, greens and purples, the layers of textiles and comfy pillows, the gorgeous pieces of art and table lamps. I loved it all! I especially loved the bedroom, with an extremely comfortable bed with lovely linens and a wood stove at the foot of the bed, which I enjoyed using on a chilly Saturday morning as I sipped my coffee. We also loved listening to Tim's records on the turntable and we played several games of Scrabble, which Tim stored in the audio closet as well. We did have a rainy weekend but toward the end of our stay the sun did come out and we were able to take a walk in the woods behind the house with our two little dogs, who also had such a blast and who loved Tim's doggie treats. We spent a lot of time just relaxing but we also ventured out to spend time in Kingston and Saugerties. Both towns were really quaint and interesting, each with some fantastic restaurants (we ate at Black Eyed Suzie's in Saugerties and Boiston's and Duo Bistro in Kingston - I'd recommend all three). On our way out on Monday we went to the riverfront and brought the dogs to Ship and Shore where we met a very nice waiter who gave the dogs some bacon and fresh water. Our whole stay was really lovely and we hope to come back in the winter time. Tim's house must be extra cozy surrounded by snow! Oh! We forgot our doggie gate so Tim texted me right away and I was able to come back to grab it, and also get to meet Tim in person. Super nice guy! Thanks for everything, Tim!

Lovely lodge in the woods!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the lodge. It was beautiful inside and out, the bed was comfortable, we made dinner there easily, the loft bed was adorable and the sitting area out back was a lovely place to have morning coffee and watch the sun move through the trees. Tim was a great host, without showing up (which we appreciated), and the whole weekend was really relaxing. We had no trouble driving to Woodstock for lunch one day and to New Paltz the next day on our way back to NYC. Our only suggestion would be a brighter light option in the living room. Overall, definitely recommend the place!

Wonderful house - warm and inviting!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful time. We were greeted with the site of seasonal rhododendrons blooming on the back patio which made me extremely happy as I had not seen these blooming in many years and they were my moms favorite flower. Wonderful music was playing when we walked in and a personal note was left welcoming all of us ( even our dog ) suggesting restaurants and giving us directions to a fair Tim knew we were going to. House was lovely - cozy and inviting and smelled great too. All the conveniences of home were there. Tim thought of everything right down to the body wash, shampoo and conditioners. The bed was very comfy and I never saw such a great blowing ceiling fan keeping us cool at night. The house does not advertise ac but we were very comfortable and it was high 80s a few days. Tim does have a portable ac unit as well as a large moveable fan if needed. We didn't do any cooking there. We enjoyed the many wonderful restaurants he recommended but everything is there in the kitchen for you if needed (even plenty of bottled water) which we enjoyed. We very much appreciated the sparkling wine left for us, beautiful glasses to enjoy it and even a dog treat canister filled with treats. You can tell Tim cares for his guests. TV was great ( wonderful cable ) if you want to watch a little and Internet was fantastic. There is a cozy little loft in the house with a bed and wonderful pillows. I had intentions of reading a bit up there but never had a chance. As a mom and grandma, I think a couple of kids would enjoy that loft and feel like they had their own space. There was a cute little screened room off the back door that I sat in each morning sipping my coffee. There are two sets of curtained sliding glass doors off the bedroom downstairs that gets you outside. Chairs to sit on out each set of doors. You can also exit to the patio through the door on the porch that is off the bedroom. Many fun exits to get outside and we enjoyed sitting out there with our dog. We also enjoyed the paths through the long wooded yard for walking with our dog. Cute seats placed out there also for sitting. Like I said before Tim thought of everything. We were both born and raised in New York and had not been upstate in many years. We will definitely be going back and will stay at DeWitt Lodge again. It's truly perfect for a couples getaway and even if you have a couple kids aged 7 and up - they will love the private cozy loft. Thankyou Tim for making our stay so wonderful!!
