Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 2

Bird at your own pace. Wonderful, intermountain valley birding from the veranda of our small villa in Toucan Valley at Osa (also known as Osa Mountain Village). Costa Rican endemics from the hammock!

Located in the foothills of the Talamanca Cordillera at an elevation of about 1,000 ft., Toucan Valley offers easy looks at Costa Rican endemics, like Cherrie's Tanager (our trash bird!) and the Mahogany-billed Toucan. We have personally seen more than 100 species right from our deck (list available upon request).

This is a perfect spot for someone with a bit of experience with neotropical birding, carrying a good Costa Rican field guide. We can provide our personal birding list for this location plus tips on where to go and how to get the most from your trip. This is a convenient way to add higher elevation birds to your Osa Peninsula experience.

The villa has one-bedroom and one bath. The fully equipped kitchen features gas stove, granite counters and custom cabinetry. Large glass shower in the bath. Spacious deck is steps from primary rainforest. Deck furniture includes table and chairs and a soothing hammock. We also provide a 42 inch flat screen TV connected to satellite service with many channels in English. While the temperatures at Osa Mountain Village are generally mild, this villa is fully air-conditioned. On site amenities include laundry and pool.

You will need an adequately powered 4-wheel drive vehicle to reach Toucan Valley at Osa. A car is a must if you want to use this location as a hub for day trips to other birding locations in the area, such as the Sierpe River Delta or Wilson Botanical Garden near San Vito. However, bus or shared taxi service can get you to Uvita or Palmar Norte where a village shuttle can get you to our door.

Osa Mountain Village maintains a large, organic, community garden. Fresh fruits and vegetables are distributed twice a week. We'd also suggest that you make a stop in either Uvita (if coming from San Jose) or Palmar Norte (if coming from the Osa Peninsula) for groceries on the way in. Creating great meals from the local produce is a real treat.

Besides the birds, we've also been treated to howler and capuchin monkeys, coati mundi, blue morphos, poison dart frogs, and lots of other interesting wildlife visible from the veranda.

.

We are more than happy to provide you with all sorts of birding tips to help you find the target birds you are after. Our personal list includes more than a dozen tanagers, 9 hummingbirds, 2 trogons, wrens, seedeaters, Little Tinamous, 12 flycatchers, 2 toucans, antbirds, and 4 woodcreepers, just to get you started. We can also provide information on reaching other locations that will make an interesting day-trip or locations you might check out on the way to or from Osa Mountain Village.

Besides birding from our back deck, there are several great spots in the village overlooking the community gardens, valley and second growth areas with different birding experiences. We will be happy to share our personal experiences with you to help you find your target birds.

if you are driving to Osa Mountain Village, we would suggest that you arrive in the day-time. The trip up the mountains from the Coast Highway will take about 30 minutes for the 7-kilometer journey. The dirt/gravel/rock road is level at first. But about half-way in it takes a sharp turn to the right and begins a steep rise. (Adequately powered 4WD required) Birding along this road can be very good. So take your time and enjoy the experience. When you enter the property, follow the signs to reception to collect your key and get directions to our villa. If at all possible, we'd like to know when you plan to arrive to ensure that you will be greeted properly.

We trust you will find the community of visitors and residents at Osa Mountain Village a congenial lot . Friday Movie Night is great fun.

Please do not hesitate to e-mail us for additional information, including current road conditions, village bird list, dining out tips, or shopping recommendations.

About Property Manager/Owner

My husband and I are retired. I have been birding since my graduate student days at LSU. My first tropical birding experience was in Mexico. We have also birded in Trinidad, Belize and Guatemala. We bought in Costa Rica because of its wonderful birding. We have birded both the Caribbean and Pacific sides, north and south.

Property Manager/Owner purchased this villa in 2012

Why Property Manager/Owner chose Cantón Osa

We bought in this location because the structure of this community meant our property would be tended to when we are not in residence ourselves. The support is there so that we can rent the property out. We also loved the idea of having our food grown for us on-site. We don't get everything we need from the gardens but it does reduce our costs. We also like that this is in the least modernized part of Costa Rica and is somewhat isolated.

What makes this villa unique

The fresh vegetables grown on site are amazing. I feel like I'm on "chopped" dreaming up meals from what we get and experimenting with ingredients I may not have seen before. The birding is amazing. When Golden-Headed Tanagers, Scarlet Macaws, and two kinds of hermits are common birds, well... life is grand!

Laid back jungle condo

  • 5 of 5

Osa Mountain Village is an isolated village WAY up a mountain, accessed by 30 minutes of steep and bumpy 4x4 dirt road. Once you finally get there, you are surrounded by peaceful and lovely jungle. The neighbors were so helpful and welcoming, and there are three waterfalls within hiking distance. The twice weekly produce basket from the farm there was just lovely! Be advised that the kitchen was not very well stocked for cooking, so bring your own basic cooking spices, etc. Our biding highlights there included great curassow, scarlet macaw, laughing falcon, purple-crowned fairy, white-crowned parrot, black-mandibled toucan, and cherrie's tanager. Night time wildlife sightings included lots of nightjars, and a greater grison ( a rare badger like mammal)

Owner's Response: In terms of equipment and utensils, the kitchen is more than adequate. However, the pantry will be bare. So your stop at the grocery before you arrive is your good shot for provisions. Besides coffee, bacon, cereal etc. I always by cooking oil, salt, pepper, and a few goodies like curry powder and Linzano sauce. Mayo and mustard. And like the good Cajun gal that I am, there is always Paul Prudhomme muled in from home. None of this keeps, so you can't just leave the place stocked.

Good birding area, nice place with some customer service issues

  • 4 of 5

As advertised this area has tons of great birds, but contrary to the owner's assertions, the only birds we were able to see from the limited-view deck were a few hummingbirds. In order to get to where the real treasures are you need to walk along the roads and trails. These are all very hilly and rough, but that's the Osa peninsula. There was serious issues with the water pressure, like there was almost none and we were never told how to take advantage of the 'bi-weekly food distribution' from the community garden. Communication was lax between the manager and us. Very nice group of people in a great location; a longish, tough drive but some good birding and views from nearby.

Very nice modern villa with all the amenities, but nicely wild, somewhat remote and private.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at this Villa for 6 days. I would say the only part that was a little concerning was the road to the village. It was very rough in spots, so u need a vehicle with clearance to get over the rocks... That being said, we had no problems if your careful driving. But the villa itself was lovely. If your looking for a private quiet villa, this would be it, at least it was when we were there. We met neighbours, but u can enjoy a nice quiet time. I'm not sure how families would like the village as it appears to be mostly older adults oriented, but for couples it's very nice and quiet. A good Grocery store is relatively close, once u got off the mountain, as well as a hospital and most amenities, my wife and I would recommend the villa. We took day trips from the villa. It is a nice place to bird watch and is close to Sierpe and other locations for wildlife tours.
