Overview

About the property

At entrance to Greenport Village & a few blocks from beautiful Peconic Bay Beach

The Captain’s Cottage is located in the seaport Village of Greenport on the North Fork of Long Island. George Graber was a Steamship Captain and the son of a renowned Schooner Smack Captain William Anderson Graber. He grew up one street over on Fifth Street, and when he married his wife Theresa Locker he moved in with her family to this cottage. More recently it was the home to the National SCRABBLE Association.

Just a few minutes’ walk from the restored 1880s home are the Shelter Island Ferry, the Hampton Jitney and the Long Island Railroad train station. When you arrive at that beautiful spot you won’t believe you are only 100 miles from midtown Manhattan.

Within a few blocks of this cozy home you can be sunbathing at the Fourth Street beach, fishing off the Fifth Street dock, playing with your children at the beach park or walking to town to sample one of the fine restaurants Greenport boasts. Why not try a tasting at the local Greenport Harbor Brewery or learn how to shuck your own oysters at the dockside Little Creek Oyster? A comprehensive sampling of local menus will be provided at the cottage.

The 2-story cottage is at the corner of the Main Road and Fourth Streets sleeps 6 and features three bedrooms: Queen, full and a room with two twin beds. There are 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen, dining room, living room and a small den-home office or game room. There is ample on-site parking and a screened porch for outdoor dining. This is a no-smoking property. We welcome families. Sorry no pets.

House, Host and Proximity Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

Our weekend stay at the cottage included short walks to the beach, even shorter walks to downtown Greenport for shopping and dinner, visiting our favorite vineyards and breweries, and relaxing out in the screened in porch. Jane, our host, made sure from the chocolate covered pecans to the himalayan pink salt, that we felt welcome. The house was actually larger then anticipated, several spaces to sneak off to read or simply relax, including the front porch, small den, living room and sun room. Details such as a basket of towels and a stack of chairs, welcoming a beach visit were laid out in the sun room ready to go. Our two younger members of our group loved being able to stay out late in town and walk safely home. This was our favorite annual Greenport June weekend thus far!

The cottage was in pristine condition & just a minutes walk away from town

  • 4 of 5

This property was quaint & adorable. Everything was perfectly appointed. The bedrooms upstairs were very nice-sized & very comfortable with lots of pillows & soft sheets. The bathrooms had everything you might need for a weekend stay including face wash & make-up removing towelettes. The downstairs had a number of tiny rooms with different functions. My son enjoyed his time in the game room which was stocked with all kinds of games & puzzles. There was a soft rocking chair where my Mom sat & read her book & my kids enjoyed playing cards around the living room coffee table. All in all it was a cozy little cottage to come home to after shopping & dining in Greenport just a short walk away. I would recommend this property highly!

This is THE place to rent if you're vacationing in Greenport!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough good things about both Captain's Cottage and it's delightful owner, Jane. The cottage itself is warm, welcoming, and immaculate. Perfectly outfitted for adults and children alike. The kitchen is super functional and the bedrooms are all spacious and thoughtfully decorated. Every detail was tended to by the owner, from the welcome chocolates on the counter to the perfectly folded bath towels, staying here was like being in a perfectly run Bed & Breakfast, but with all of the luxuries and conveniences (space, kitchen, etc.) of renting a house. Jane was beyond accommodating and such an amazing host. And then the location -- it literally doesn't get any better! We didn't need our car at all and could walk to all the amazing restaurants, shops, etc. in town (2-7 minute walks depending on where you're going). Super close to the carousel/docks and a playground for anyone with kids! Overall, a very memorable weekend in large part due to Jane and her awesome cottage.

Warm Winter Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, along with our newborn son, stayed at this lovely cottage with our two friends, another couple from NYC. All adults were in need of a quiet respite and, as new parents, we were desperate for a getaway. A winter weekend at the Restored Seaport Home was just what the doctor ordered and, as Greenport frequenters, I can say that this location was our best, most memorable experience yet. The vacation began with such gracious, hospitable correspondence from the owner, Jane, who not only accommodated our last-minute reservation, but also personally prepared the house for our arrival, taking into consideration that we would be traveling with a newborn. The house was charming and warm, both figuratively and literally, and no detail was left unattended to. The layout is perfect for two couples, as the upstairs spacious bedrooms are separated by a beautiful large, newly-finished bathroom- making it feel like two separate bedroom "wings" so-to-speak. The bedrooms are large and the beds are comfortable. Downstairs, we spent time cozying up in the living room watching movies (provided), playing board games (provided), reading (large library of books available), and sipping a glass of wine (or two, or three). Beyond the comfortable nature of the house which is rich in history, an outstanding feature of the Restored Seaport Home is the LOCATION. With a 24-hour convenient store a stone's throw away and the village of Greenport strolling distance down the block (two minute walk), once we parked in the driveway upon our arrival, we did not need a car at all. We walked to town at our convenience, enjoying coffees from Aldo's, lunch at Lucharitos (tacos), oysters at Little Creek, and dinner from The Frisky Oyster. We even managed afternoon beers at Greenport Brewery and brunch at American Beech. We love Greenport in the winter, as it feels like a very personal, quiet, calm and inviting community. Now, having stayed at the Restored Seaport Home and meeting Jane, we look forward to reserving this lovely house and frequenting this beautiful town much more often. Thank you, Jane!
