The Old Farmhouse

The old farmhouse has been tastefully modernised to combine its' original character with modern practicalities. It still has the original catalan tiled floors and has a large kitchen equipped with gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher, american fridge/freezer, microwave etc. with a spacious dining area opening onto the terrace. There is a large living room with a 40" TV and DVD/CD/MP3 player (we have a DVD library for your use) and an open fire for winter visitors to enjoy.

On the first floor there are three large double bedrooms and a shower room. There is an additional wc and wash basin downstairs and an additional shower room in the grounds by the swimming pool.

The terrace is filled with mature trees and shrubs and has a shaded outdoor eating area.

About the property

Mas de la Rivière

Mas de la Rivière, an old Catalan farm, sits on the banks of the river Tet in it’s own oasis of over an acre of mature gardens and is surrounded by vineyards and artichoke fields. It is 1km from the traditional Catalan village of Villelongue de la Salanque, 5 minutes from the beach at the modern beach resort of Canet en Roussillon or St. Marie Plage and 10 minutes from the cosmopolitan city of Perpignan. Despite being in a tranquil setting it is very close to the major link roads into Spain, up to the mountains and down the coast and the glorious mediterranean sea.

At the Mas there are three houses: the owners house built where the stables used to be, the original farmhouse and the converted pumphouse. Each house has its own fenced garden with outdoor eating area, BBQ , lounge chairs etc.. and they share the rest of the grounds including the large swimming pool (12 x 6 m) with a spring board for diving into the 3m deep end. There is a shower room and laundry room for communal use in the grounds. There is a childrens play area including a 3.7m trampoline, basketball and a pingpong table to entertain children as well as teenagers and the not so young. Our latest addition is a petanque pitch, the typical southern french game of boules. The mas is a very safe place for children as it is set well away from the road and there are plenty of safe gardens for them to play in. The houses are fully equipped just like home from home. Internet access is available on site too. There are beach bars, restaurants and beach clubs with stunning views of the sea and mountains. Beach, sea and mountains..mmmmm!

Perpignan: The colourful and exotic city of Perpignan is right on the doorstep . It takes ten minutes by car . It is hard to think how anyone would want for more from a city. It is full of sophisticated shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and music clubs. There are many interesting festivals held in the city during the year. The old quarter of the city is home to several multicultural food markets and full of fascinating Catalan architecture. The icing on the cake is that almost at every turn, the city is full of exotic palm trees.

Roussillon, The Med, The Pyrenees & Spain. This is a truly superb region for any type of holiday you could wish for and at any time of year. Roussillon is the sunniest part of France with app. 320 sunshine days a year with the autumn being a real treat and break from colder parts of Europe. The Med resorts of Canet, Barcares, St.Cyprien and Argeles all with marvellous beaches are all just minutes away. The famous and beautiful Collioure, Ceret and Figueres in Spain are loaded with artistic history. The majestic Pyrenees wrap themselves around Roussillon and tumble into the Med, the lush countryside is quite simply carpeted with sun baked vineyards. If all that was not enough, the lovely Costa Brava of Spain is Roussillon's southern neighbour.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wonderful Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

Very nice and quiet location, beautifully furnished and spacy with Catalan floor tiles. The swimming pool is exactly as the picture shows. It is spaceous and well serviced and situated in a large garden with palms and mediterranean trees. The landlords are very nice and did everything to our convenience. Washing machine and dryer are located in a separate part and at your disposition whenever needed. We spent a wonderful vacation and would always highly recommend this place.

A little bit of paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family holiday: perfect for all three generations. We were brilliantly looked after by Jeni and Jean-Pierre. There was oodles to do: beach, mountains, walks, cycling and of course, chilling by the pool with a glass of rose to hand.

The farmhouse is delightful.

All just rather lovely. We are missing it already!

Lovely property, Beautiful location, fantastic hosts - A couple of things that we'll remember from our stay here.

Jeni and her husband were amazing the whole time and were on hand to help us with any query we had. As we only had the one car, Jeni spent most of the week offering lifts to our group as Taxi services almost don't exist in the area. We rented both houses as we were in the area for our Wedding and Jeni was kind enough to allow us to hold the evening do in the courtyard of the main house (Even giving the beautiful bride a lift to the ceremony on the beach)

The houses were big and clean and had everything that we needed. Would 100% recommend to any families looking to stay in this area.

Lots of games for the kids on site also which kept them entertained for our whole stay - Table tennis is something we all especially enjoyed.

A good family holiday house!

  • 4 of 5

We spent a very enjoyable family holiday at this property. The house was spacious with lovely original tiled floors. We particularly appreciated the outside space, the private garden with pleasantly shaded outside eating area, and our children loved the shared larger garden with the swimming pool (deep enough for diving), trampoline and pétanque. There were even surprisingly large fish in the shallow river by the house which was great for keen young fishermen and also good for the dog to splash in on hot days. The owners were very welcoming and helpful and we appreciated their advice on where to go in the area. It took us about 15 minutes by car to reach the nice beaches in between Canet and St Cyprien (open to dogs). We enjoyed coastal walks around Port Vendres and Port Leucate and trips to Carcassone, Collioure and Barcelona. We would recommend this property to families with children because it gives plenty of safe run-around space to occupy them if you are not off to the beach or heading out on a trip. There are also lots of different things to do from the house within reasonable driving distance.

Idyllic. Wonderfully welcoming host and family

  • 5 of 5

Although I have put the last date of arrival, I have stayed here previously in both the farmhouse and villa at varying times of the year. Jeni and JP are very welcoming and it always seems that nothing is too much trouble for them. On more than one occasion, Jeni has prepared and served a wonderful gourmet meal for me and my friends on, I must admit, quite short notice and at such reasonable rates it's really not worth the hassle of shopping and preparing it myself. Such a wonderful spot by the river with a local beach just a short bike ride away and Canet Plage with its Markets nearby. Medieval Perpignan is also within easy striking distance and I can spend many repeat visits there just wandering round. My favourite bit, probably, is picking a lemon from the tree in the garden for my G&T before taking it poolside to vegetate when the thought of even a short bike ride is just too much - marvellous. The accommodation fit-out needs to be highlighted. I have stayed in many holiday homes in Spain and France which can be a bit hit and miss but I have to say that the build quality of the kitchens and bathrooms in particular is of a very high standard - much better than what one typically finds in such places. Everywhere is clean and tidy and the pool area brilliant - the pool is gi-normous!!!

I cant recommend the hospitality of the owners or the standard of accommodation highly enough. In the last couple of years, I have planned my journey south to include a stopover at Mas de la Riviere (I probably need to say here that I am retired and my trips comprise a couple of months or so at a time and mostly end either on the Mar Menor or Sitges). I usually travel alone with friends joining me along the way at various places and I aways feel particularly safe here.

I have no hesitation to commend this destination to you if you are looking for tranquility and an easy pace of life - even if only for a short while.

I hope that, one day, you might be able to enjoy a break there as much as I always do.

an excellent holiday home

  • 5 of 5

I would recommend this house to anyone looking for a holiday which is simultaneously both relaxing and stimulating.

It is relaxing because the weather is so reliably good ; because the house is so comfortable and characterful ; because the pool is so refreshing ; because the local restaurants are so good; because the owners (who live nearby) are so endlessly helpful and friendly.

But if you feel more adventurous you will have an almost limitless range of possibilities. - Within a few minutes drive (or bus ride) you will be on glorious sandy beaches or in fascinating local towns like Perpignan. However you are also well placed to explore the Pyrenees, or the ancient towns of Cathar Languedoc, even Barcelona.

I had an excellent holiday here, and I am totally confident that you will too.

Villelongue de la Salanque is a very typical Catalan village with not a tourist in sight; you are likely to hear the friendly locals speaking in Catalan. The village has a few shops, post office, bank etc. Canet village is also close by and is very attractive and far more developed with many more amenities. Canet Plage is about 5 minutes drive away by car and is a very large seaside resort with all that has to offer. The beach here is excellent for families as it is sandy and the sea is shallow for a long distance making it safe for young ones to paddle and play. The sandy coast stretches for miles and miles and there is a huge choice of beaches to go to. In contrast to the beach the charming city of Perpignan is only 10 minutes drive away. The Spanish border is only 30 minutes drive away and the ski resorts of the Pyrenees are only 75 minutes drive away. There are masses of interesting gorges and chateaux and fortresses etc. to visit in the mountains. Sun, sea, sand and mountains!

Golf: Golf Information: The Mas is situated just about 15 minutes from the St.Cyprien golf course itself only half a mile from the Mediterranean. St.Cyprien has both 18 hole and 9 hole courses. The 18 hole course is par 73 and 6480m. In this Roussillon region there is also the spectacular Domain De Falgos, 18-hole course, par 70 and 5047m, with views overlooking both Mount Canigou in the Pyrenees and also to the Costa Brava in Spain. There are also 9 hole courses at Montescot, Amelie Les Bains and Camprodon. From the Mas it is only 25 minutes drive to the border with Spain where you can enjoy the CostaBrava courses at Torremirona Golf Club which has 18 holes and is par 72 and 6245m and Peralada Gold Club which has both an 18 and a 9 hole course and is par 71 with a length of 6704m. When you return back to the Mas, you can then enjoy the large pool. The Mas is only 15 minutes drive from the airport.
