NAVIGATING THE HALLS RIVER: You can put your boat in for free at the Homosassa boat launch next to McRaes (about 10 minutes away from house). From this location, you can quickly get out to the Homosassa River and then onto the Gulf.

Our house doesn’t offer a quick route to the Gulf but you can get there. It takes roughly 60 minutes, depending on how fast you go, to get from the house to the intersection of the Halls River and Homosassa River. There is no wake in these areas due to the manatees.

Here are a couple of things to consider about navigating the Halls River:

- Flats boats or other boats that are suited to low water are the best to take up the Halls River; Pontoon boats also regularly go up.

- Navigating the Halls River up to our house requires that you be comfortable with your boat in low water. Up around the house, the water is easily 5 - 7 feet deep. But down through the middle section of the Halls, there are large open areas where the water levels drop. Having a depth/fish finder is very helpful as water levels can be as low as 1-2 feet at times depending on the time of year. The water levels rise in the autumn and throughout the winter and can vary depending on prevailing wind direction; the tide does not have a large impact on the Halls River water level.

- Finding the channel through these larger flat areas and through the tighter connecting channels on the Halls River is key; you must stay in the channel to make it through. It is not always clearly marked given that there are minor variations with sand shifting each year. If you have looked at the Halls River on Google maps, the channels are easy to see. It is a mostly sandy bottom through these tight areas. We have GPS route/path files for Lowrance and Garmin GPS units; please contact us and we can email them to you.

- Halls River bridge, just up river from the Homosassa, is a low bridge measuring 8 feet from the water level to the bottom of the bridge. If you have a bimini, you might want to lower it as you go through. There is a section marked with white arrows that indicates the best point to go under the bridge. Here is a link to the tide table for the Halls River bridge:

About Ken & Susan Fuhrman

We've been married for 25 years and have two great kids. We both work in the tech industry as independent contractors. This gives us lots of flexibility and allows us to enjoy our new Florida home often. Ken first visited this area IN 2014 with his parents, who live nearby in The Villages. Ken felt that this was the closest feeling he had to being in Hawaii without all expense and lengthy travel time. This is our personal home now and we have decided to rent it when we can't be there to enjoy it.

Ken & Susan Fuhrman purchased this house in 2015

Why Ken & Susan Fuhrman chose Florida Central Gulf Coast

We looked at many homes in the Crystal River / Homosassa area and couldn't find a nicer property than this. We wanted a home with access to the Gulf, but also access to some of the waterways that lead to the Gulf; this home was perfect. It is a newer home at the head waters of the Halls River. There is a natural spring just yards up the river from us so the waters are crystal clear and much cleaner than anything we looked at on other canals. The kayaking is simply spectacular.

There are no high-rise condos here and and it is located in one of the last remaining natural coastal areas of Central Florida. It feels very secluded because the neighborhood isn't all built up but drive just minutes to US Hwy 19 and all the shopping, restaurants and activities you need are right there. It really is far enough away without being too far away.

What makes this house unique

We love this home because of its location and the newness of the property; it is clean and well maintained. We have purchased all new furniture, comfortable beds and luxurious bedding to make it feel like a retreat. We outfitted the kitchen so if you don't feel like eating out, you can have a quiet dinner at home. The views out the back windows and the Florida room are of our private dock and Halls River with all its wildlife, including the manatees. Much of the land around us is not developed so you see the beauty of Florida out the front windows too. All the undeveloped land around the house gives you the full Nature Coast feel while still being in a comfortable home. A true getaway ...

A perfect home to relax and enjoy nature

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for 8 nights in August, the week of our daughters wedding. Ken & Susan were very accommodating and easy to work with. They have gone to great lengths to make guests feel right at home, from the quality furnishings to the labeled light switches and accessories. The kitchen had everything we needed. The location on the waterway permits easy access for kayaking, boating or fishing. It's a quiet street, with nature all around. They have given a lot of thought to setting up the home so guests can be comfortable and make the most of their stay. If you are looking for a trouble free comfortable getaway, this is a great choice. Ken & Susan were professional and personable from start to finish. We will definitely stay here again when our plans bring us to this area.

Beautiful home next to local fishing spot!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 8 including 4 grandparents and two kids (12 & 9) had a fabulous stay. The house was clean, nicely decorated and stock with basic kitchen necessities. The 2 beds, sheets and towels are of high quality, sofa beds was as expected.

We enjoyed fishing and kayaking behind the house, saw plenty of fish and an otter and a manatee! The best surprise was being next to a local fishing spot with FL local fishing for Mullet, all super nice guys who gave us 6 free Mullet. As amateur fishermen, the grandparents was out there morning and afternoon each day having a great time trying fishing with success.

Our host, Ken and Susan manage excellent communication before arrival, during our stay and on day we departed. Overall we were well taken care of and had no issues during our stay. We would LOVE to come back again!

Owner's Response: So glad your fishing trip was a success. We are very lucky to be located next to a great Mullet fishing spot. One of our favorite things about Homosassa is kayaking in the Halls river behind the house and seeing manatee along with all the other wildlife. So glad you got to experience that too! Thank you for being such wonderful, caring guests. You and your family will always be welcome in our home. Please do come back and stay again very soon.

Great Trip!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the house it was clean and well represented by the ad. The use of the kayaks was a nice bonus and the location was nice for paddling around exploring. While there we went scalloping for the first time and saw the manatees too. This is a great location and convenient to everything you may need from food to shopping and local attractions. The owners were very attentive and helpful. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone looking in this area.

Clean, high end and top notch

  • 5 of 5

We loved the wonderful beds, the fluffy towels, the high end appliances- this place rocked. The kyacks were wonderful but a little hard to get into from the dock- mostly because I'm old!
