Palo Duro Canyon Escape @ Doves Rest Cabins - SkyHouse

Sky by Name. Sky by Nature. Let your heart sing. You’ll never forget the first time that you see this view! Perched hundreds of feet above the west rim of Palo Duro Canyon State Park, from this celestial cabin you will survey everything that lies below in the canyon floor, and from above; where the sun, stars, planets, and the moon are seen traveling in the wide open expanse of the firmament. SkyHouse is a real piece of Heaven and is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This massive one-bedroom, 1 and ½ bath cabin was designed by the premiere home-builder in the Texas Panhandle. This Cliffside retreat has a contemporary design that seamlessly blends into the landscape around it. The master bedroom acts as its own private suite, including a queen size leather sofa sleeper in the main room.

The large covered porch and expansive terraced patios with HOT TUB make for perfect outdoor gatherings, and is the centerpiece during long summer evenings. The combination of upscale amenities and stunning vistas is what makes this Palo Duro Canyon Cabin so attractive to the discriminating intrepid traveler.

Why Jeff Means chose Texas

Palo Duro Canyon State Park with its Technicolor walls make for high-desert scenery more commonly seen in southern Utah. It offers more than 30-miles of hiking, mountain-biking and equestrian trails and an additional 1,500 acres set aside for horseback riding. You can bring your own horses so don’t hesitate to ask us about local boarding. Mountain bikers can experience the best single track in Texas and will enjoy the well maintained five trail heads networking for some 26-miles throughout the canyon ranging from "mild" to "wild" in technical ability - dirt, rocks, river rock, sand, wash-outs, switchbacks, drop-offs and climbs with alternative trail accesses throughout.

During the summer, enjoy a performance of the outdoor musical drama TEXAS. The play, nearing a half-century in its on-going production runs Tuesdays through Sundays, June through August, at the 1,700 seat Pioneer Amphitheater. Watch the stories, struggles and triumphs of early settlers. The family-friendly show has singing, dancing, fireworks and lots of Texas humor.

You'll find SkyHouse a place of amazing beauty, quietness and nurturing of soul & spirit.

Palo Duro Canyon embodies Texas’ sense of place and spirit like few other areas in the state. Doves Rest Cabins is honored to provide the world’s only private overnight luxury accommodations to intrepid travelers, offering unique views and an iconic symbol of the American Southwest for our guests to enjoy. Wildlife diversity and abundance around Doves Rest is excellent, including populations of blue quail, bobwhite quail, Rio Grande turkey, bobcat, mule deer, white-tailed deer, Barbary sheep, coyote, roadrunners, skunks, rabbits and numerous songbirds. Fun memories and relaxation happen here!

What makes this cabin unique

Off the beaten path and outside of mainstream destinations, we’re far from every other place to stay. We deliver an amazing guest experience that is truly authentic Texan, personal, and character-rich. Doves Rest Cabins is truly a unique base camp from which to explore one of the world’s most transformative spot – Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Doves Rest Cabins is ideal for travelers who believe small is beautiful, and see travel not as something one does, but rather identifies it as part of who one is.

If private and quiet surrounded by nature with friendly wildlife nestled in your own little world only a few minutes away to the second largest canyon in America interests you, then you’re in the right place!

Fall in August

  • 5 of 5

Skyhouse was absolutely perfect! We stayed for 2 nights, Aug 9, 10, and were lucky enough to have morning temps in the 60's and highs in the 70's and 80's! Perfect for hiking the canyon. We were a family group that rented 3 cabins - Skyhouse, Fortress and Comanche. Skyhouse had the best views and the best gathering space for our group of 9, even though it has less beds than the other cabins. We were visited each morning by the Barbary Sheep, countless birds and heard coyotes howling from the canyon. Accommodations couldn't be beat - they have everything you could need, from binoculars to bath robes, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Highly recommend.

Dove's Rest Skyhouse

  • 5 of 5

Skyhouse cabin lived up to the description I read when trying to decide to book the cabin for a few days. Internet and facebook hype can be deceptive, wide angle lenses can make asmll room look huge. The reality matched all that is written about this cabin…it was great.

The peaceful surroundings made our 3 night stay comfortable and relaxing. The amenities described were all there and fit our needs perfectly. The covered patio facing east shielded us from the evening sun and made our cookouts great. In the mornings the cover protected us from the rains and made coffee at dawn very nice. The Barbary Sheep made several appearances and provided good photo ops.

The rains kept the hiking trails closed in Palo Duro State Park so we made a couple slow drive thrus stopping at good look out points for photos. The night we went to the TEXAS play was cool with a light breeze making the evening enjoyable. The play is produced and performed with great skill.

Canyon offers the Panhandle Plains Museum, well worth the time, and may good places to eat. The Imperial Taproom deserves a special mention, food is very good and the Beer list is huge for those who like to try something different. KJ’s is a can’t miss for breakfast.

We visited the Botanical Garden in Amarillo and really enjoyed the time spent there. Well maintained displayes with a huge variety. Photographers will love it.

We enjoyed our time in Dove’s Rest Skyhouse and the surrounding venues to visit. We highly recommend this location.
