This beachfront house is not large but has a sizeable open floor plan that is perfect for a couple on a romantic island getaway. Situated on a private beach replete with coconut bearing palms and a prevailing eastern trade wind, the Purple Jawfish Beach House has been called the best vacation rental for couples by numerous guests on other vacation rental websites. The house has recently been gut-renovated and is like new. The kitchen area, dining area, sitting/reading area and sleeping area are all well defined by unique counters, a Honduran hardwood custom bookshelf and an armoire. The kitchen features all new stainless steel appliances (no dishwasher though) and a sunken deep sink on a unique penny peninsula countertop. There are 20 feet of 4 foot high windows on the front and sides of the house (15 feet of them look directly out over the beach to the Caribbean sea and the mountains beyond). It is truly amazing to see.
There is a new deck with a swinging loveseat where a couple can watch the tiny waves gently break on the beach (the north side of the island has the bigger waves. The house is located on a rare (for Utila as it is not incredibly sandy on the shores) stretch of white sand beach in the snorkeling hotspot neighborhood of Blue Bayou, which stretches out in front of the Mesoamerican reef. The mountain range Cordillera Nombre de Dios rises up in the distance from the mainland and on most days you have a great view of the mountain peaks out over the Caribbean even though they are over 20 miles away. A quick search of Google map’s satellite will show you why we think Blue Bayou is the absolute best area for snorkeling or shore diving available for vacation renters. The reef in this area is second to none and is right in front of the house. The only thing separating you from the water is about 50 feet of white sand and a few palm trees. A few of them are mature palms which produce coconuts. To the left of the house there are only almond trees, palm trees and sand. To the right, the neighborhood of Blue Bayou stretches out for a few houses (it is not large at all). This is the best neighborhood on Utila for vacation rentals due to its proximity to everything you need on an island vacation. It is very quiet but still close enough to get to restaurants or bars without a Tuk-Tuk (mototaxi). The house is on a dead end road (actually the end of the main road) where people catch boats to the south shore.
The house is perfect for people who want to dive, snorkel, get a tan on the beach or fly-fish. All of these activities are accessible from the private beach in front of the house. It is only a short 10 minute walk to town (a bike is even quicker, you can rent them for less than $5 a day if you get them weekly) but far enough away that you can relax in peace with a cold beer or a Coco-loco (take a coconut, empty the milk, replace with rum) without doing much of anything. This is the Caribbean of Hemingway, before cruise ships and all inclusive resorts, Purple Jawfish beach house is a real life corona commercial and since we cannot be here all year round, you should stay at our place instead.
I am a 35 year old middle school teacher from upstate NY living in NYC for the past 10 years. I love to travel but never had the opportunity to travel out of the country until l was 23. Since then I have traveled to over 40 countries (all on a pretty tight budget) and fell in love with Central America. So much so that I met my wife in Nicaragua. We actually began dating on Utila after traveling together from her hometown (she had never left either). We both learned to dive on the island and Susy even learned to swim there.
James Passantino purchased this house in 2011
When I saw this little spot on the beach for sale years later we took a huge risk, emptied all our savings and my retirement account, took two loans out and never looked back. NYC where we live is way too expensive to own so we live in a small rented studio apartment in Brooklyn and chose to put our money into fixing the Purple Jawfish Beach House (purple is her favorite color and the jawfish is my favorite fish, they are not purple) until we can retire there. It may not be the biggest place but it has that "it" factor. We have put our blood, sweat, hearts and souls into this house and hope you can see that when you stay here.
This house is located in front of one of the most beautiful Coral Reefs you will ever see. There are also two lagoons on the other side of the sand road that you could kayak in and see mangroves and all the different animals that live there. The reef is full of amazing animals like turtles, eagle rays, squid, ocopus, hundres of species of colorful fish and eels (there are a family of small Chain link Morays in the rock jetty in front of the house). I've even seen dolphins and nurse sharks in the water from the deck and then gone out and snorkled with them. By the way, there are yellow headed jawfish in front of the house about 150 ft out and to the left. They are awesome but shy so you have to hover over them slowly to not scare them into their burrows. .
The property is located close to town, but far enough away to feel like you are removed from the "hustle and bustle" of the night life. The house was clean and had all the necessary amenities. Being able to snorkel right off your own beach was a real novelty that we took advantage of regularly.
If you are planning on going to Utila to relax, unwind and maybe reconnect with a loved one, then Purple Jawfish Beach House is the place for you. It is perfectly situated on a beautiful beach with amazing views and fantastic sunrises (although early in the AM). The house is small, but perfect for 2 people. The location is great as it is far enough away from the hustle/bustle of the heart of Utila to be very quiet, but also close enough where you are just 5 minutes from anything/everything on the island. James (owner) and Mike (property manager) are great and will help you with whatever you need help with. The off-shore snorkeling in front of the house is simply world class. My wife and I are avid snorkelers and have traveled around the world to snorkel and nothing compares to the snorkeling on Utila and Roatan (aside from the Great Barrier Reef of course). What I recommend you do is walk down the road 5 minutes to the Coral View Resort (with your snorkel gear). Leave your sandals on their deck and tell the staff that you will be back shortly to have a few beers. Then swim out from their dock about 50 yards until you hit the drop off. Then snorkel along the drop off back towards the Purple Jawfish House. This is not for the faint of heart as the drop off gets really deep, but the coral is just spectacular and so are all of the fish that you will see (Barracuda, Sting Rays, Eagle Rays, Parrot Fish, Purple Jawfish, etc). The whole trip will take you about 30 minutes, but is well worth the effort (as I did it 4 times in a row one day). Then head back to the Coral View Resort for a few beers and maybe some lunch. Coral View has an amazing dock with spectacular views of the coral reef from the top level.
Here are some recommendations:
1. Make sure to rent James's scooter (the island is only 4 miles long, but 4 miles in 88 degree heat can be a long 4 miles and you are on vacation, right)?
2. Breakfast- Go to Charlotte's Café (great lady and fantastic food....she had raspberry juice which I had never had before).
3. Lunch- The Buccaneer, Rehab, The Venue or Coral View.
4. Dinner- Mango Tango, The Mango Inn (Tuesdays), RJ's BBQ (AMAZING).
5. Drinks- Coral View, Rehab, The Venue or Tranquila (our favorite and the strongest drinks on the island).
6. Groceries/Gas- Bush's Store
7. Things to do- Rent kayak's from The Venue and head to Rock Bay/Rock Island for the day.
Hope this helps! Enjoy!
Waking up in the morning and sitting on the deck with my coffee was a wonderful way to start each day - I'm bummed we didn't stay longer.
Purple Jaw Fish had everything we needed or wanted. The beach is right off the last step, the snorkelling is fantastic, access to town and restaurants was and easy stroll of a quick tuk tuk ride away. Our neighbours said that we might here the music from the bars at night, but we think the palm trees acted as a bit of a noise insulator.. We didn't hear much at all!
The kitchen had everything we needed for our stay, the space was perfect for a few days by the beach. My only pick would be that the bed at the back of the house is very close to the road and the traffic noise comes right through the wall - but that was really only during the day when I tried to take a nap... Hint: nap on the deck. There is very little noise at night!!
I'm so happy we picked this spot - I highly recommend it!
Spent 9 nights at this spectacular spot. James was a great host and was really responsive. The beach house is in a great location, a close walk to town and the views are just gorgeous. It was loud over the NYE period and Utila is quite the party island but with the windows closed you can get a bit of sleep while the music throbs on to 4am+. Really enjoyed swinging on the porch reading and the snorkeling is fantastic too. I went to Coral View to do my PADI and advanced certification and would really recommend that for anyone interested in diving - just a 5 min stroll away. Highly recommend it and loved the stay. James also helped charter a flight from Rotan to Utila at short notice which was fantastic as well. Thanks so much!
I'm hesitant to endorse this place; prefer that it's my secret ;)
I'm not a resort person so I'd searched for simple accommodation in a spectacular setting where I could snorkel and relax for a week on my own and that's exactly what I got. I loved Utila's unpolished charm and the Purple Jawfish Cottage was more than I expected. I savored my own ample stretch of white sand beach on the Caribbean Sea, just a seashells throw from the covered porch and porch swing, incredible coral reef to explore directly out front and all this was an enjoyable stroll into the village for great food and drinks. The other reviews here are accurate - James is a fantastic host and Mike his property manager is also a man of his word. Best deal in the Caribbean? Uh, ya!
What a special spot. We throughougly enjoyed every minute on the island. From the moment we arrived to the house we were beaming, even the ride to the house from the ferry is pretty! The view with the palm trees and beach and azure water in front is just amazing. The "house-reef" is really beautiful, we saw all types of fish and colorful corals during our snorkling mornings. The location is perfect because we could easily walk to town for groceries or dinner without being so close that noise is noticable. At night before bed we went onto our laptop to netflix and displayed it on the wall mounted TV. When you add in the modern conviences like new applicances, fast internet and usb charging ports in a wall outlet you have a perfect romantic escape. Not sure where in the world you can stay with these amenities at a private house on the beach for this price.
Utila is a small island but there is a lot to do. Situated on the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world (The MesoAmerican Reef) scuba diving and snorkling are the activities that first come to mind (that and year round whale shark sightings). But there is so much more if you are interested in getting more than just an inexpensive and professional PADI scuba certification. Explore the jungle and the fresh water caves. Test your luck to find the crashed plane that looks right out of an episode of LOST.
