My Chalet home known as Great Smoky Mountains Getaway was built by my family to allow us to spend time together in the mountains. My father's parents and grandparents, my grandmother, grandfather, great grandmother & grandfather, were all born and raised in Gatlinburg in the Roaring Fork area of what now is located within the national park boundaries. My close relatives great aunts, uncles and cousins still live in Gatlinburg within walking distance of my home on Cartertown Road.
Sheila purchased this chalet in 1980
Kear's Broom Shop located next to my home on Cartertown Road, Gatlinburg, TN has existed for almost 100 years. My family has tied handmade brooms at Kear's Broom Shop my entire life and there hand crafted handmade brooms were once featured in National Geographic magazine. In days gone by, we had as many as five generations of family members working together to tie and carve handmade brooms at the broom shop. Kear's handmade brooms are sold and shipped all over the world.
I love my Great Smoky Mountains Getaway home and my time spent with my Smoky Mountain family. We find that our time spent in the mountains allows us to slow down and enjoy what God has provided through nature and the craftsmen culture of the Smoky Mountain people. We as a family continue to make life long family memories at our Great Smoky Mountains Getaway and I hope that your family does too.
Our stay at this mountain cabin can only be described as AWESOME!! This was our family's first experience at renting a cabin home and some members first experience in the Gatlinburg area of Tennessee. The home was beautiful, warm and delightful. Every amenity was available to us and the owners did not skimp on plenty of comfortable linens and blankets. We didn't need to bring anything except our luggage and food. The furniture was beautiful and comfortable to cozy up on. There were two fully furnished and stocked kitchens, two beautiful patio areas and TV's everywhere! There's plenty of room to spread out and the location is wonderful if you like a quiet hideaway from the hustle and bustle. We were only minutes away from Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge where there is plenty to do and places to eat. This is an awesome cabin for families or get together with friends. You'll love it. Even drinking the water from the tap was great! It was so pure and clean tasting. The only glitch in our experience was initially navigating the driveway up to the cabin. It's no. problem if you have 4-wheel drive or shift down to low gear. Our experience was fantastic and we definitely want to come back.
It is very roomy for families and very clean. We enjoyed the quite and even saw a bear. The driveway is a little tricky but as long as you shift to low and don't stop it's no problem. Had a great visit only a mile or so off the main strip.
I agree that the pictures of the road to the cabin were given however we mostly walked the half mile uphill and downhill to avoid any accidents after one of our cars picked up some broken debris and got a nice flat tire..god literally came to our rescue providing free parking space in his backyard- a church below where we used to park all our 4 cars and walked up the half mile trek day or night hoping no bear shows up as we heard..... the very first night one of our minivans hung off the pit right at the entrance of the 'forbidden' ramp. We had to call the towing company twice in 2 days so yeah our stay was rather eventful...we decided to park in the church thereafter... if you are willing to off-road on your way to cabin rather than exploring outdoors ... go for it... otherwise stay clear... I did not find anything exceptional about the cabin ... but for the price it was ok.. the outdoor grills were dirty with webs and stuff... the bunker beds were squeaky ... no pool tables, no hot water tubs , no ping pong but yes they are not specified either so it's ok... I may not be going back again just because I now I know how bad the road is ... it's over 45 degree incline with gravel and mud .... not cemented or pitched :( I was misguided by the stars but never read the comments which I did later and felt sorry for a few folks who had bad experiences ....but then you get what you pay for and I m sure there must be nicer ones around
Overall the cabin was wonderful, and worked great for our stay. If you plan to rent this cabin be sure to read all of the reviews and cautions regarding the drive way. If you have a four wheel drive vehicle you shouldn't have any issues. When we arrived, it had been raining and the drive was wet and muddy, so it was very scary trying to get my SUV up the drive because I do not have four wheel drive. One of my family members that stayed with us had a four wheel drive truck and had no problem. The cabin itself was very nice. There are plenty of cooking utensils, which came in handy since we ate most meals in. The area is very peaceful but still close enough to town that we didn't have to drive very far. We enjoyed our stay at Cobbly Nob!
Thanks Sheila for everything, especially for accommodating me and my church family on such short notice. The cabin was suited just right for all of us. It was very nice and clean. The drive way was a little challaging at first but it was no problem after shifting in first gear and we had 3 vehicles. All which were cars.
Thanks again Sheila! We look forward to coming back again!
The house was everything we could ask for. The pictures didn't do it justice. The driveway was steep, but if you shifted into low and went at a steady pace without spinning your tires it was not hard to make it up to the house. As our whole group said after our first time up it, who needs to go to Dollywood to ride a roller coaster when we get to do this multiple times a day. My wife and I drove a 2009 2 wheel drive Vibe and our Daughter and Son-in-Law drove a Honda CR-V. Our stay was uneventful except the second day the air conditioner on one side went out (a burned out capacitor, but Sheila and Mark had it fixed by the afternoon). If the chance comes again to visit the Gatlinburg area we will definitely stay here again.
