|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
You can enjoy El Centro and get a good night's sleep in this flat! Located minutes from Old Town via a short taxi ride (roughly $2), or a bus ride (25c), where you can enjoy old architecture, great dining and bars that is offered downtown. After the fun, you can come home to a safe, quiet and relaxing space. No loud bar noise until two in the morning here, just a good night's sleep!
Your flat is the ground floor of an Ecuadorian duplex located in a small Ciudadela one block from 7 kilometers of walkways beside the river Yanuncay. There are three bedrooms. The master bedroom has a queen size orthopedic bed with an en suite bathroom. The other two bedrooms have full size beds. All beds have Egyptian cotton bedding, down comforters, and lots of soft pillows for your comfort.
The bathrooms have quality towels, rain shower head ( master bath) and soft rugs. Some bath essentials and amenities are provided.
The flat looks directly out to a lush garden filled with many varieties of flowers and succulents, your own avocado and lime trees. If in season, you are welcome to the bounty. Song birds, hummingbirds and butterflies make their home here too.
The kitchen will not disappoint. It is bright and colorful! Under-cabinet lighting provides plenty of task lighting. We stock the basics and give you the makings for your first cup of coffee or tea to get your morning started. The corner market is one half block away. We provide a stainless steel coffee pot, local coffee, toaster oven, blender, artisan dishes, quality spices. If cooking is not your thing, walk across the river to Popacuchu Cafe, one of the best places to have breakfast and sweets in Cuenca.
A private English speaking driver can be arranged for any transportation needs, and cleaning services can be arranged for longer stays. On request, we provide a cell phone with minutes and pre-programmed numbers (you only pay for the minutes).
My husband and I are retired and live in the upstairs flat. Your privacy is guaranteed , but we are available as needed. When we travel, our expectations for cleanliness and comfort are paramount. We will do our best to translate our expectations into your stay at Casa Bella Mia.
For pet owners:
As you know, many units will not allow pets. There are indeed reasons for their policy. We accept only responsible pet owners and up to two trained dogs! We cannot accept other pets due to allergy issues. A safe, fully enclosed backyard is right out the patio door for night trips and a park, one block away, for walks and off leash runs. Keep in mind, when looking at other properties, that Cuenca is an urban town with lots of concrete and very little green space. We do not allow pets to be left alone! Many dogs will bark and get on the furniture when their owner is absent. You can arrange for your pet to stay with us, for a small fee; or provide your own supervision. We can provide you a large crate. (Exceptions are made for crate trained dogs who do not bark). Our dogs are not aggressive but we make sure they are always supervised when they are in the yard or other common areas.,
Cuenca is a lovely town and it is a fun place to explore, so enjoy all it has to offer!
We retired and moved to Cuenca 3 years ago with our two dogs, Mia (our standard poodle) and Bella (our yellow lab). We are still working on our Ecuador bucket list, the Galapagos is the next big checkoff. We love walking along the Yanuncay river (one block away) with the dogs, gardening in our beautiful back yard (everything grows here), binge watching Masterpiece Theatre, Netflix originals and sharing dinners with good friends at the great restaurants here in Cuenca.
We remodeled the ground level apartment in the duplex we rent for friends and family. We would very much like to include you in that group. We chose to live in our current location because it provides the proximity to the old town (El Centro, 10 minutes) with the quiet of a small Ecuadorian barrio (neighborhood), close to miles of parks.
As VRBO/Homeaway guests, we like to leave our lodging immaculate, so like good guests, we are welcome back. As hosts, we provide comfort in a home environment, help when requested and privacy for our guests. My husband lived in South America growing up and speaks Spanish, so we are able to assist you during your visit with us.
Cheryl DeWitt purchased this apartment in 2013
Our quiet neighborhood, Ciudadela Los Cantones, is almost exclusively Ecuadorian. It is off the beaten path, with very little traffic, but close to Avenida Las Americas and Primero de Mayo, major thoroughfares to get you around town. We are a 5 minute walk from Avenida Las Americas, which has buses that take you around the city for $.25 ($.12 if you are over 65). A ride to the steps leading up to the Old Town (El Centro) takes about 15-20 minutes. A taxi (we can call for you or you can flag one down, will take you to old town in about 5-10 minutes for $2.50 or less, depending on your destination. As is true in most cities, times dramatically increase during rush hours. Getting a taxi during rush hours and when raining can be challenging.
We provide WIFI, a 42" Sony TV and Roku with VPN access for the greatest selection of Netflix and Amazon Prime movies and TV shows. You have unlimited access to a great back yard for dogs and people, outdoor dining and a grill. You are one block from 7 kilometers of riverside walks. The apartment is located in a quiet, almost exclusively Ecuadorian neighborhood.
We would recommend this apartment to anyone who wants to be a bit outside of the central city in a quiet and leafy neighborhood. The unit is very spacious and comfortable. Also, the owner, Rex, is amazingly helpful and a terrific person. He can set you up with guides for various trips you might want to take, and they too are knowledgeable and super-competent. The only trouble we had was with the wireless internet, which stopped working after one day. I assume this was a fixable glitsch in the local service, and should not affect other guests. By the way, note where you are at the apartment, because it is not that easy to find again unless your cabbie knows just where it is.
From the moment we walked in, it felt like home. Very clean and comfortable and beautiful outside garden!
Rex an Cheryl were awesome hosts, very helpful with directions and helping us with restaurants. Very nice neighborhood close to the beautiful Yanuncay river great for jogging or long walks. Close to markets, buses and taxis a perfect location! We will definitely be back!

After a busy and noisy 9 days in Quito, this was just what we needed to relax and enjoy the slower pace of Cuenca. The apartment was exactly as described on VRBO and was perfect for our family of 5 (4 adults and 1 child). We had all the comforts and conveniences of home, plus a lovely garden in the back to kick back and enjoy the sunshine and a the birds. Rex and Cheryl were great hosts and were most helpful with recommending places to see, restaurant suggestions and transportation needs. The apartment is in a safe and clean neighborhood and only a block from a the river and a wonderful play park for kids to enjoy. Thank you again Rex and Cheryl for sharing your beautiful home!! We'll be back!
Great place by the river. we had a lovrely river walk every morning. The kitchen was well stalked. The house was comfortable and large. There was a beautiful backyard. The cab ride was 2-3 $ to the center . We walked it 40 min We never felt unsafe Rex and Cheryl were not only accommodating but really nice people. They helped with buses and tour guides. We are a family with 16 year old twins and we stayed for 2weeks.
This property was very close to the river walk and centrally located. 2.00 taxi ride to the center and quiet! The owners always tried to help with getting transportation and things! Great Host services!
I really can't say enough about Casa Bella Mia and the help that Cheryl and Rex gave. The actual home was as described and even better than I had imagined and meticulously clean. The kitchen came fully equipped and stocked with everything but the fresh items. Cheryl was kind enough to stock the refrigerator with enough for breakfast the next morning, which was a blessing since we didn't know our way around. There is a tienda less than half a block away where I was able to purchase eggs, milk, water and pop. There were beautiful, fresh flowers on the kitchen table when we arrived, such a thoughtful touch. The introductory packet that they send ahead of time is invaluable (56 pages, I believe, of where to go, what to see and directions). They have a copy of it when you arrive at the house as well. Rex gave us great directions, additional maps and even called the first taxi for us. He was always willing to give suggestions when asked. We were able to park our rental inside the gate, which was very helpful. It was just a short walk to the river, which was very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend a stay here. It was a wonderful "home away from home". I would definitely recommend the bus tours to get an overview to help figure out what you want to see. The swing and zipline on Turi was amazing. We also went to a spa in the Banos area of Cuenca, which was amazing. Their food recommendations were helpful (and delicious) as well.
Many private drivers can be hired to take you to near by towns and attractions. Their prices vary, but you can expect $10.00 an hour for a private car and driver. Often they act as tour guides and are a good means for adventure.
