Get Trip Insurance if Traveling August - November

  • 3 of 5

First, let me say that we're Floridians, not Northerners, so we don't panic unnecessarily when we hear the words "Tropical Storm." We had booked this cottage as a landing place to explore the area while our daughter was on an athletic recruitment trip with UWF.

While there, it morphed into Hurricane Nate which shut everything down a day early. We received notification from Home Away about the safety of our visit. A map, published by Florida DEM Disaster Preparedness showed us in an Evac Zone (which I sent to the owner) the cottage is approx 6 blocks from the Bay - you decide. She responded with her Escambia Co Admin Report indicating the cottage was not in an Evac Zone. The University of West Florida CLOSED! The Weather Channel Hurricane dude was there broadcasting from Pensacola Beach Pier. All local businesses in the area were shutting down. Regardless, and the fact that under these circumstance, surrounding hotels were offering refunds for those who decided "safety first" (other athlete recruit parents shared this) the owner refused to refund our lost night stay (we checked out well prior to check out time a day early).

No, we did not have trip insurance. No, we wouldn't have needed it otherwise because we would not have canceled under any circumstances due to her recruitment trip. It left a very bad taste in my mouth.

By the way, our daughter verbally committed to UWF so we will be there many, many times in the upcoming next 4 years because her athletic schedule will not allow her to travel home so we will go to her. We will not be staying here.

Quaint cottage!

Nicely appointed cottage, with close access to everything Pensacola and Pensacola Beach! Super clean and comfortable! Deborah, the owner was great to work with, very responsive and everything was as we expected, and far more comfortable than a hotel stay!

Such a beautiful little house for my family and I. Loved that it wasn't far from the beach which made our stay even better. We chose to stay here vs a hotel so that we could cook and not have to spend money eating out.. My daughters favorite thing was having netflix, after being out on the beach for the whole day it was nice to just come back home and relax. We look on heading to the beach in either September or November. We will definitely look into renting this little cottage again.

Fantastic host and cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

My family of 5 enjoyed our stay at the cottage, which was clean, as described, and in a great location. I took a jog in the neighborhood one early morning and always felt safe (I'm female). Deborah went out of her way to make our stay more enjoyable as well. When the coffee pot didn't work, she came drop off a new one! Thank you!!!

The cottage was so charming and felt like a home away from home. It was hard to leave!

  • 5 of 5

We fell right into a routine similar to our own. The lay out was roomy enough for us all and there were loads of storage nooks for all our baby gear. We never ended up going out to eat, bc it was just so easy to cook dinner there while all the kids washed up and showered after playing at the beach all day. I swear the washing machine was one of the neatest ones I've used (based on the load selection, it would tell me how many minutes of wash time it was going to take). The kids and my husband loved the Netflix and Roku, of course. Tons of beautiful natural light in the home and it's decorated very nicely, and smart.

*The accordion style doors were a bit of a hassle, and definitely don't provide any privacy for Mommy and Daddy, and the AC seemed to struggle a bit in the evening to get below 74, I was terrified the baby would ruin the carpet by eating at the dining room table. However, those are the only negatives I could find! The dining room carpet was easily protected by a towel or garbage bag. And as difficult as it seems to back out and leave the driveway, I got used to it, AND GOOD AT IT, after the first time!!

Having so many utensils and basics in the kitchen was wonderful! I made cake for my daughter's first birthday. They had cake pans!!

And the backyard and deck with lights made for beautiful pictures.

For those planning a stay here: there are so many things stocked ahead of time! Laundry needs, dishsoap, board games. There's more than just basics in the kitchen: there's pizza cooking pans, And mixing bowls, and wine and shot glasses, a colander, Salad tongs cutting board, several spices And even no stick cooking spray, Ziploc bags, and other items too! So many of the things I thought I'd need, I didn't have to bring or purchase!! Funny thing though, no whisk. Wish I'd brought one, I have too many home, I could have left it there 😕?. However, I rubber banded three forks together and was just fine.

I realized we'd make memories in a home that wasn't ours and thought I'd be sad that something big as our daughter's first birthday was celebrated somewhere unfamiliar, but I never dreamed it would feel so homely and familiar after all. We were so happy to make wonderful memories here, and would definitely stay again.
