RETRO STYLE AND VINTAGE CHARM
In the charming hamlet of Halcottsville is a renovated Victorian with its own sense of style. The house is decorated with vintage finds from antique and flea markets that give the house a retro feeling. The kitchen is the pride and joy of the owner who pulled the cabinets out of a building in Manhattan, had them refinished in Woodstock and used them to create a new custom designed kitchen.
Lounging on the deck while listening to the sounds of the stream guarantee many relaxing afternoons, and when it gets chilly, you can cozy up by the fire pit.
The house is close to local restaurants, shops, nature trails, ski areas and multiple experiences the Catskills has to offer.
The owner has a passion for cooking which shows when you see this custom designed kitchen. The cabinets were a find from a building on the Upper East Side and restored in Woodstock by Steve Heller from Fabulous Furniture. The cabinets sat in the living room for a few years until, during a truth or dare game with children of friends, one of the children asked the owner if the kitchen was ever going to be finished. It was finally finished in 2014 together with the rest of the renovations to the house.
Esther de Jong purchased this house in 2007
Halcottsville is a lovely hamlet town located in the Western Catskills. It has lot's of old world charm and a wonderful lake in the middle of the village where you can go kayaking or rent bikes to go for a ride along the lake. The house is walking distance from the lake and there are lovely trails that run behind the house. The stream out back is perfect to cool off in on a hot summer day or just to listen to while lounging on the deck.
I stayed at Esther's home over New Years Eve along with a group of friends. We were eight total and we found the house to be very comfortable and the layout of the rooms perfect for a big group. The home was very clean and well stocked with towels in the bathrooms, everything you could need in the kitchen. The kitchen is really deluxe so if you love to cook this home is a treat. There are two dishwashers and two ovens! This is an older home that has been beautifully renovated. We spent a lot of time hanging out in the kitchen, dining room and living room, cooking and loved using the wine fridge and outdoor fireplace. We went down to Margaretville a few times for groceries which is a short drive away. This would be a great home to visit in the summer with the nearby canoe rental (right down the street) and creek behind the home. Esther was also very considerate in making sure we got to the home safely with snow drifts on our day of arrival. Highly recommend this home for an upstate getaway for a group or family.
My friends and I were looking for a large home where we could spread out, cook some big meals, and do some outdoor activities. This home fit the bill. The chef's kitchen was great and had everything we needed to cook meals together. And the rec room upstairs was perfect for playing card games and watching movies at night. We also enjoyed the kayaking and bike rentals about half a block away. We ate meals out on the large patio during the day and sat by the outdoor fireplace during the chilly nights.
The instructions at the house made everything easy, and the host Esther was very sweet. The owners also left us a bottle of wine and some fresh vegetables!
The place was immaculate however being it was in August it was quite uncomfortable without air conditioning .
This was the perfect place to spend a family vacation. There was something for everyone. Hiking, kayaking, relaxing on the fabulous deck, and just splashing about in the stream out back. The very little time we spent inside was to cook, and sleep during the cool evenings with the windows wide open. There's even a swimming hole close by the house in this quaint little hamlet. The kitchen has everything a gourmet cook could want, including a wine cooler.
This home was a lovely retreat to spend the Memorial Day weekend with a group of family and friends attending a nearby wedding. There were 7 of us total and we were very comfortable. Everything was as described but the decor and the cozy charm of the home were much better in person than described. We wish we had had more time in the home and the neighborhood. Highlights include an awesome outdoor space with a cool fire pit which we put to use. We also loved the loft area at the top floor of the home and the creek that runs along the back of the home. My fiancé and I went for a run up the hill and it was beautiful and challenging-very senic. There is also a spot to rent kayaks down the street. If you are coming to the area for a wedding, there aren't a whole lot of hotels but many rentals and b&bs and I'd strongly recommend this home!
