House, 2 Bedrooms + 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-5) own driveway & off street parking
we lived on the property for 26 years we bought the property 2005 have been remodling the 3 houses over the last 12 years. Havent lived anwhere else then Waimanalo since we moved to Hawaii in 1991.
Barbara purchased this House in 2005
Why Barbara chose Waimanalo
Waimanalo is a neighbohood a life style of the local culture has remained one which is about music, food, talking story & comes from the heart. Waimanalo beach you'll find yourself one of just a few people on the 5 miles of sandy beach. The ocean is very gentle & safe very unique area on an island of 1 million people
not inside the house

Jay and Barbara are very nice and live in the house next to the cottage. They provide food to get you through the first day.
The cottage itself is older and needs updating. The beds need to be replaced as does most of the furniture. There is no heating or ac which would be fine if the windows opened and closed more easily.
It was clean and the location was in a nice quiet neighborhood. The beach cannot be seen from the cottage. A short walk down the road gives access to a beautiful beach.
Best family friendly cottage
We had a great experience renting this cottage from Barb and Jay. It was so close to the beach we strolled there every day. We appreciated the food and coffee they left as welcome gifts, it made our late flights bearable. The house is quaint and filled with so many useful things it made our stay very comfortable. Already looking to see when we can return. Mahalo.
No frills, but close to beach
Owners are great, very friendly and accommodating
Kitchen had eggs, milk, juice, cereal, coffee and papaya stocked when we arrived
Its only a 5 minute walk to the beach
House had all the kitchen and bathroom basics plus beach toys, chairs, etc
Privacy......There are 3 houses on the property and although some plants help create a visual barrier, everyone has their jalousie windows open so you hear, TVs, coughing, etc and know that everyone can hear your conversations on the deck as well.
Smell...compost, sewage...not sure..but it was strong sometimes and we had to leave
Cleanliness... Shower curtain, baseboards, grout, curtains, all had mold. Humidity makes it harder to keep up on, I get that, but as a guest, be prepared. Same with bugs. By the last day I was taking a shower with bugs on the floor and the black mold shower curtain sticking to my legs and was very ready to go home! Also lots of cabinets and drawers contained other peoples leftover stuff which was kind of gross... half used jar of peanut butter, used toothpastes, body wash, hair brushes, random hats, socks, etc,
Appliances.... Dryer and Fridge are both tiny. Tough to stock up on groceries so we had to make several trips and dryer could only handle about 3 towels at a time so laundry took a while too.
Photos...the listing photos of the main areas are pretty accurate but there's a reason that the owners haven't included photos of the kitchen and bathroom. Although functional, they are pretty shabby.
COMFORT..... Beds and pillows are not very comfortable. Also couch is a very firm futon
If you're looking for a very basic, no frills, home base and plan to spend most of your time at the beach, this is a great spot. If you're particular about cleanliness, privacy or luxury, you probably want to keep looking
Some additional comments: We are in a local neighborhood adjacent to the most beautiful beach in Hawaii. There are also spectacular mountain views above the houses. Part of living in a neighborhood in Hawaii is being able to, for better or worse, hear your neighbors. (as well as the ocean.) We too, smelled something and found the people on next street were having their septic tank pumped. Other issues mentioned have been addressed, as we had a long period of heavy rain and wind just before the dates guests were were here. It's all rainbows over the mountains now . Cottage is affordable and feels homey, it does not have a resort ambiance.
Home away from home
This is a great place to go to get away from the traffic and noise from the city. Cozy cottage with all the essentials. We were on the move most of our vacation but it was great to have a place where we could go and relax and cook meals before taking a short walk down to the beach. Barbara and Jay are super nice, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. I have read other reviews complaining about ants but we had no troubles with them. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean. If you're looking for a resort experience this is not the place for you, but if you are looking for a nice comfortable place to call home for your vacation then I highly recommend staying here. The beach here is beautiful and never crowded. We loved our experience here.
Honestly our stay was fantastic. The owners Jay and Barb were so nice and helpful. We rented a car for the day after we got there, thinking we could bus it back to the airport (not a good idea as it was farther than we had thought! You will need to rent a car while there) and without asking Jay came over and drove us to pick it up. Any issue we had was through the website. We were given a 4pm check in that was an hour earlier than Jay and Barb were expecting us so they were still cleaning house from the previous renters when we got there. But they were so nice and accommodating that it wasn’t a problem. We had lots of sheets and towels, including beach towels. They brought over fresh fruit and had the essential foods at the house for us. As well as really good Hawaiian coffee. Mmmm
The house is older than it looks on the website but very comfortable and with less than a 2 minute walk to the most beautiful beach on the island! And secluded as it’s surrounded by local homes we rarely had to share the beach with other tourists. We traveled all around the island for fun and adventure and have to say that our favourite beach out of all of them was our personal beach right outside our door.
We will definitely stay here again when we come to the island and thank Jay and Barb and their granddaughter Sage for the wonderful home and memories! From the Vince family
Awesome Location and Home
We stayed here for about 8 days. The location cannot be beat. It’s about a minute walk down to a BEAUTIFUL beach.
We had three adults and two kids. There is a futon in the living room that could definitely use a new cushion, but we made it work. Lots of towels, sheets, toiletries available. The house is older, and it shows, but it’s a perfect little beach bungalow that fit the bill.
Kitchen had everything we needed. There are a couple corner stores close by, and a grocery store less than 2 miles away with great Poke.
House had lots of beach toys, and outside shower, cute patio.
We met the owners once each, and they were lovely and helpful.
Everything was about a 20-30 minute drive from the house: Honolulu, Kaneohe, Kailua etc.
We would definitely come back.
15 minutes in either directions to more
restaurants & stores, 17 miles to Waikiki.
