Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Applecross - Eagle Rock Applecross

Sleeps 2-10. Pets Welcome. Fantastic Heating. Handcrafted Interior, Dream Bathro

A luxurious, secluded, award-winning eco-lodge, 15 minutes walk from the Michelin Star Applecross Inn, this house is special.

Experience the wildness, passing wildlife and incredible panoramic views of Skye (90 mins away) and Raasay, wrapped in comfort by the library fire with a whiskey, or lounging on the deck in the sunshine.

With exquisite attention to detail, this highland home in one of Scotland's most ancient Sanctuaries, enjoys panoramic mountain and sea views from its clifftop hollow.

Eagle Rock, is the definition of low key luxury and pragmatism. Equipped with high end audio, WiFi and tech, handcrafted fittings and fixtures, (including the magnificent harp-shaped staircase, carved from a giant local Douglas Fir), and a Michelin chef designed kitchen, the house yields dozens of delightful surprises.

There is warmth everywhere, even room by room and underfoot! (Honeymoon couples, retreat groups, and wedding parties love us!). We'd enjoy helping you design your ideal highland holiday: First class transport options, bespoke catering services, botanical, cultural and historical offerings, wildlife luxury cruises...So often, guests arrive with lots of plans, and then find they are really very happy hanging out on the deck or media and library snug by the fire or a window seat.

Designed by an award winning architect, (who put his expertise in designing six star South African game lodges using local materials to good use), wilderness, luxury, and ever-changing vistas vistas make Eagle Rock a jaw-dropping experience. The house has 2500m of floor space, yet a playful flow of intimate, cozy nooks with the large living makes it a popular destination for couples. With fireplaces a stunning lighting scheme to fit different moods and functions, a huge deck and garden, and a Michelin chef designed/equipped kitchen.

This eco sanctuary was built as a labour of love over years by the owner. It exists to inspire and nourish those who want to step out of their daily reality for a while and connect with each other and the heartbeat of the Highlands.

Accessible by Britain's highest mountain pass, the Bealach na Ba, and its own private road, Eagle Rock is a spotlight destination on the NorthCoast 500 route - Scotland's answer to America's Route 66!

Keep an eye out for passing porpoises, otters, eagles and other wildlife. Listen to the wind roar from the depths of a cozy fireside leather sofa in the library as dramatic storms sweep across the bay from Skye. Dip into a lifetime's collection of books, films, sculptures, artworks and games. Enjoy meals at the huge, specially commissioned ironwood dining table in the vast dining room. Between September and March, you may even be lucky enough to catch the northern lights!

About Catherine Stewart

I fell in love with Applecross in 1998 - and it only took 10 years to find the perfect spot to build. First, I had to carve out the road to the site. With the help of friends, family, an amazing archtect and local craftspeople - and a lot of elbow grease, I hope I have created a beautiful place that blends in with its surrounds and which is a pleasure to inhabit.

A South African (with Scottish lineage), I am at home in this highland wildness - enveloped by warmth and comfort and sculpture collected over a lifetime of travel. The media snug and library is packed with beautiful books and a very varied film collection. I love to see how people respond to, and play with the lighting, the furniture, the art. For me, Eagle Rock strikes a balance I savour - between the sanctuary and solitude of its location and the way the house seems to flow and wrap around the very varied groups and couples who stay here...It brings out the best in people.

Catherine Stewart purchased this chateau / country house in 2014

Why Catherine Stewart chose Northern Scottish Highlands

Eagle Rock is built beneath the mythic rock it is named for. It lies within an ancient sanctuary of standing stones, on a part of the cliff known as the Black Drum, I 15 mins walk equidistant between church and pub, totally hidden from sight, yet with panoramic views, the house lies in a hollow, with the mountains at its back and the sea before it. The house is designed to mirror and harmonies with its surrounds, with local stone and wood, handcrafted for comfort and beauty.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Guests have identified different highlights, but the views, the lighting and the comfortable beds get the most mentions. Many of the cyclists and mountaineers love the huge baths and powerhowers. Foodies love the kitchen and the fact that there is so much fridge space. Temperature room control, and underfloor heating make the place a pleasure to be in in Winter.

Ein schöner Platz auf Erden

  • 5 of 5

Würde mich jemand fragen: Welches ist der schönste Ort in Schottland, an dem du je warst? Meine Antwort wäre: Eagle Rock in Applecross. :-)

Words and photos are limiting - you must see and feel Eagle Rock to get it

  • 5 of 5

As stunningly beautiful as the photographs on the Eagle Rock website are, they do not do justice to ER or the sweeping sea and landscapes visible from every perch: window, balcony, deck, and rock. The view quite literally changes by the minute, as the clouds and sun play on the blue/gray of the water and the green/gray of the grass and stone. Even the mist and rain (which happen ☺) bring the gift of magnificent waterfalls and rustling streams and brooks. We were a large group, yet there were many moments—even hours—of peaceful contemplation of the majesty of the mountains and sea. Pressures and anxieties melted away—the magic of your immersion in the wild yet somehow calming natural beauty of the view demands it.

The owner, Catherine, is herself among the greatest charms of—and we believe integral to—the Eagle Rock experience. We were celebrating a 30th anniversary and four birthdays in our group. Catherine graciously facilitated amazing dinners, lovely cakes, wool spinning, guided walks, drives and other activities, often joining our wild crowd. We left begging her to come home with us.

The descriptions of the interior and the amenities are not exaggerated—if anything, Catherine modestly plays down her aesthetic gifts and the beauty of her dream fulfilled. The decks, patios and fire pit draw you out in sun and cloud and mist. Ask for the story of the magnificent fir tree from which many of the stairs, benches, shelves and floor boards are made. Catherine’s collected works of sculpture—including her own!—fill the house with beauty and surprises. The kitchen is so well appointed you could prepare anything for anyone, and then clean up in a jiffy.

Applecross is still quite remarkably (and wonderfully remote), yet boasts the Applecross Inn with food that will blow your mind. Judy and Robert manage the massive influx of summer visitors with enviable aplomb. We spent many an hour in the fine weather, sitting outside letting the setting sun take our breath away. We had dinner in the Walled Garden too, which was equally warm-friendly-delicious, and the gardens are truly spectacular. On a practical note, Tesco delivers groceries, which can be ordered online. And the little shop just 5 minutes walk away has a remarkably broad selection of staples. We can’t recommend Eagle Rock more resoundingly than this: we will be back—flying across oceans and braving the Bealach for the thrill of looking out across the bay to Raasay while sharing a glass with Cath.

What a glorious place Eagle Rock is. The views are so magnificent and the living areas so spacious you don't ever have to leave the house of you don't feel inclined to., but if you do step out of the door, the garden and surrounding landscape is breathtaking.

It's so well kitted out that you won't lack for any home comforts, and Cath will go out of her way to arrange it for you if you've forgotten anything.

Definitely a place to make memories...and some amazing photos too!

Best Family Holiday!

  • 5 of 5

When I asked a friend of mine (a proud London-based Glaswegian with 3 small children) the best place he has ever taken his family on holiday he said that is easy, "EAGLE ROCK, APPLECROSS". What fine advice. Having just come back from a one week holiday at Eagle Rock (+wife and 4 daughters aged 7-14) I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. The house itself is truly stunning with an expansive view over the Inner Sound towards the Isle of Raasay and Isle of Skye. The view is so captivating that it can be quite an effort to pull yourself away! The house itself is extremely high spec offering both large living spaces and quiet areas to escape. As billed the modern kitchen is fully stocked with all the gear to make life easy. A BBQ and firepit topped it off, especially with final sunset at circa 11:30PM in June! For our family the best local attractions were the excellent Applecross Inn and #1 take away fish and chips served from the silver stream caravan opposite (not to forget the ice cream), Walled Garden with its beautiful flora, good food and tree house, the walks around Applecross - especially the river walk and exploring the beaches. Further afield the kids loved Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, hiking to the Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye and visiting Plockton to see the seals on Callum's boat the 'Sula Mhor'. Getting to Applecross is an adventure in itself. The 'other world' drive over the Bealach Na Ba is truly something else. Almost worth the trip alone! That said the long way around via Shieldig also offers amazing coastal views. Given the remote nature of the peninsula a bit of common sense planning is required in terms of self catering supplies. Tesco deliver which is a big help. There is a lot of useful advise on the Eaglerock website of what to bring, take note. Any gaps can be filled by the better than average stocked village store just down the road. The key feature defining the whole experience however is the wonderful proprietor Catherine. She made sure we were fully prepared before heading in to the wilds of NW Scotland (great comms) and recommended all the best activities for our family. It is rare this day and age to find someone who goes the extra mile as standard. Or in Catherine's case the extra 10 miles. Thank you so much for making our holiday one of the best ever! We will be recommending Eaglerock, Applecross to all of our friends and family. Kind regards, J
