My husband and I met on the Big Island; married and moved into our Hilo home. After many years and several renovations we enjoy sharing our home with family, friends, and travelers from all over the world.
My husband and I and a girlfriend found The Arecas to be comfortable and relaxing after a day out sightseeing.
The bedrooms are spacious, the kitchen is well equipped, the living area is uncluttered and clean.
The windows and doors are double glazed and when closed they keep the sounds of the coquis at a minimum.
It is an easy drive to downtown Hilo.
A perfect home away from home.
Thank you, Paula.
What a lovely find! this was a last minute rental, because an existing spot fell through and Paula responded immediately. It was a few miles up from Hilo, situated in a lovely, private area with very, very comfortable beds. Internet, clean home, easy access to downtown Hilo and simple. No fancy tech, but who wants that when you have the sound of rain, cochis and the calling of the forest, the sea and the volcanoes. My brother said he couldn't believe how comfy the bed was...which is a pretty important for a light sleeper.
The price point was great as well. Thank you for saying yes to our request.
My friends and I had a wonderful time staying at "The Arecas". It was even better than described on the website. Paula made us feel right at home. She gave us a bowl of oranges from her tree (which were delicious!). She also provided a binder with suggested activities and restaurants in the area; this was very helpful. Her home was spacious, bright, and clean. There were plenty of extra towels and everything you would need in the kitchen to cook a meal (pots, pans, utensils, variety of seasonings, etc).
This was the perfect place to stay to explore the Hilo area. It's right down the street from Boiling Pots (you can walk) and Rainbow Falls. Very close to historic downtown Hilo, and a short drive to other sites (Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Gardens, Akaka Falls, Volcano). We would definitely stay here again and will recommend it to all of our friends coming to the Big Island.
The Arecas is a wonderful place to land--beautiful setting, large bedrooms, very comfortable beds, nicely appointed kitchen, bathroom, living room, and lanai (our favorite spot). It's well maintained, clean, and quiet --well, except at nightfall when the symphony of tropical birds, frogs, crickets, owls, etc. begins! Paula is responsive and personable. Fresh fruit from the local Farmer's Market was a treat. Heartily recommended; I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again! We had a wonderful time.
Cousin and I were quite impressed with this spacious place. Bedrooms, living room, kitchen and lanai/patio was so homey that we both wished we were permanent residents.
Paula and her husband are very friendly hosts. They provided us with awesome travel resources (restaurant menus, maps, and activity info).
We both were busy holo-holo'ing (cruising) around the island each day that coming back to this cozy abode was greatly welcomed. I loved the bed in my room. I'm considering changing my home mattress to a firm top. I slept like a baby to the sounds of the Hilo evening (wind, rain, and Coqui frogs).
We would highly return back to this place again. We have friends that saw our FB pic posts are looking to reserve this place on their next visit to Hilo.
Way better than staying in a hotel in Hilo. You won't be disappointed.
