Why Julia Truax chose New Harbor

The cabin was built by our grandparents in 1951 to serve as a summer home for the family who lived in Middlebury, Vermont. It was used as a summer home for the following three decades. The cabin has remained in the family, but life paths do not allow it to be used as a summer home any longer. The cabin has all the charm it once did, and not much has changed!

What makes this cabin unique

The front porch is partially screened in so guests can sit in the peace and quiet and listen to the sounds of the ocean, the buoy at the mouth of the harbor, and the wildlife. This is the perfect place if you are looking for peace and quiet! Very limited views of the neighboring houses. There is no television, and cell service is limited so it is the perfect retreat for those who like to "get away from it all!". The cabin is heated by a wood stove, and there is a wood shed at the back of the cabin and axes available to chop wood.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We stayed at this amazing cabin for 7 nights. We loved the privacy, quite, view, charm, cleanliness and ambiance of the cabin. Julia was quick to respond to all of our inquiries prior to our arrival, and provided us with detailed instructions on how to get to the cabin, operating the house, general information, and local and regional attractions. We were very surprised to find it more spacious than we imagined by looking at the photos online. And although rustic we would also describe it as cozy and charming. We loved riding our mountain bikes around Salt Pond and Long Cove Point Road. We enjoyed the sunset views down Pemaquid Loop Road and the cinnamon buns at the Cupboard Cafe in New Harbor. We appreciated and used the fully equipped kitchen. It was a great get a way for us. We are relaxed and refreshed ready to face our hectic schedules in NJ and NYC.

I am so happy we discovered Hitchcock Cottage.

  • 5 of 5

My boys would say that the lack of wifi was difficult. I found the experience of not having that distraction rather peaceful and refreshing! (And we do travel with a hot spot so they weren't totally cut off from "civilization"!) Sitting on the screened-in porch looking out at the ocean over the treetops , especially in the evenings and even well after dark - without the torment of insects - quietly enjoying the sea breezes, the sounds of the water breaking on the rocks below, and the harbor bell softly tolling... it was positively blissful. The cabin has its own quiet woodland setting off the main roads and it's spacious, clean, and comfortable. It is well outfitted with everything you need. I was intrigued with the family history both told and evident around the cottage. I can imagine so many great memories being made here! In addition to the property itself being a great spot there is a lot to do on and around the peninsula, too. I simply love Damariscotta and New Harbor. The Pemaquid Point light and other local historic spots are great places to visit. Monhegan is amazing (though we didn't make it out there on this trip) and Boothbay is not far away. We kayaked on the Muscongus Bay, enjoyed lobster at Shaw's wharf, and explored the area both by car and on foot. We had a fantastic visit! I'm so happy we discovered Hitchcock Cottage - I really look forward to visiting again soon! Thank you!!

Wonderful cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was even nicer than we expected and in a great location. So secluded in one way since you're above the street and in the woods, but within a short walk to a good restaurant. Unfortunately, we only stayed one night, but would have loved to stay longer. It is clean, well stocked and has a very nice bathroom. There is a lot of room for a family to stay and was well equipped with kitchen supplies, books, games and a wood burning stove. We loved the location and all the charming spots to visit. We would highly recommend staying here if you like having a peaceful spot to relax and enjoy each other's company. We would definitely stay here again.

Vintage cabin - Perfect for relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Loved the cabin in the woods with its partial view of the bay. Isolated but an easy short walk to ocean dock and Rachel Carson Salt pond and trails.

The cabin was very quaint and peaceful. There is no cell or internet service making it a complete get away. We enjoyed the serenity.

We loved our short stay. The cabin is so well kept, it was a pleasure to be there. The screened in porch was a real plus inthe quiet wooded area.
