This is the perfect place to stay if you are looking for somewhere quiet and cozy to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life! Nestled in a wooded hillside, the front views look out to the ocean. It is heated by a wood burning stove, with an optional electric heater. It sleeps 4-6 people comfortably with one queen bed, two bunks and a sleeper sofa. Guests are required to bring their own sheets, pillowcases and towels. Cell service is limited and the cabin does not have a television or internet. The kitchen if fully equipped with refrigerator/freezer, stove, cooking utensils.
The cabin was built by our grandparents in 1951 to serve as a summer home for the family who lived in Middlebury, Vermont. It was used as a summer home for the following three decades. The cabin has remained in the family, but life paths do not allow it to be used as a summer home any longer. The cabin has all the charm it once did, and not much has changed!
The front porch is partially screened in so guests can sit in the peace and quiet and listen to the sounds of the ocean, the buoy at the mouth of the harbor, and the wildlife. This is the perfect place if you are looking for peace and quiet! Very limited views of the neighboring houses. There is no television, and cell service is limited so it is the perfect retreat for those who like to "get away from it all!". The cabin is heated by a wood stove, and there is a wood shed at the back of the cabin and axes available to chop wood.
We stayed at this amazing cabin for 7 nights. We loved the privacy, quite, view, charm, cleanliness and ambiance of the cabin. Julia was quick to respond to all of our inquiries prior to our arrival, and provided us with detailed instructions on how to get to the cabin, operating the house, general information, and local and regional attractions. We were very surprised to find it more spacious than we imagined by looking at the photos online. And although rustic we would also describe it as cozy and charming. We loved riding our mountain bikes around Salt Pond and Long Cove Point Road. We enjoyed the sunset views down Pemaquid Loop Road and the cinnamon buns at the Cupboard Cafe in New Harbor. We appreciated and used the fully equipped kitchen. It was a great get a way for us. We are relaxed and refreshed ready to face our hectic schedules in NJ and NYC.
Hitchcock Cottage was absolutely perfect - perfect way to begin retirement. It was an ideal location, well kept and maintained and VERY well equipped. It had everything one could possibly need. Shaws' market just 5 minutes away is the perfect place for lobster. I would certainly recommend this cottage to anyone who want to get away from the hubbub of the world! Thank you to the Hitchcock family!
Hitchcock is a great cozy little cabin on a winding dirt road in the beautiful Maine woods. The screen porch offers a view of the water beyond the trees. A short walk through the woods takes you to the shoreline. A small but well-appointed kitchen had everything we needed. Kids will love the bunk beds. We were here for a wedding, and were grateful to find an iron and ironing board in the cupboard. A high chair would be a great addition to the amenities.
Maintenance responded immediately and effectively to a small plumbing problem. We enjoyed our stay and would be happy to return.
We vacationed over several summers with another family in New Harbor 20+ years ago, when our two children were growing up. We all have wonderful memories of those times. My wife and I just returned from a New England vacation and stayed in the same rustic cabin that the two families did years ago. It is still charming ... still clean and well-maintained ... and still provides many lasting memories. The setting is private and secluded, with a water view, and everything you could possibly need is provided. We also learned about the family ownership history, which only added to our personal memories. It is convenient to all our favorites – Shaw's Seafood Restaurant, Pemaquid Lighthouse, Granite Hall store in Round Pond - and many other eateries and fun activities. We shared our adventure with our adult children, and now they want to go back also. Stay tuned!
This place is great! The cabin itself is clean and perfectly designed for simple living. Huge kitchen table looks out towards the ocean. You can hear seagulls, fishing boats and buoy bells from the back deck. Everything you need and nothing you don't. We walked to the Rachel Carson Preserve tide pool, Shaw's Lobster Shack and the Hardy Boats. State beach and historic sights are a short drive away. We played cards and board games, picked blueberries and blackberries, ate lots of great seafood and read books! A perfect place to spend time with family without distractions. Owners were easy to work with.
The house was alot bigger than the pictures appeared online. There were 6 of us in our group and not once did we feel like there was not enough space. The sitting room, dining room and screen porch are all good size so we were able to relax and talk. The house is fully stocked with everything you need. The kitchen had EVERYTHING. The house doesn't have a TV, but has alot of board games. We traveled with 3 kids and it didn't matter. It was very welcome change to "unplug" for a couple of days and never once did the kids say they were "bored". The place was very clean. The harbor is a very short walk. There is a restaurant and Lobster pound right there. The harbor is beautiful. The 5 minute walk to the Salt Pond proved to be a hit with the kids. They spent hours there catching crabs and hunting for sea glass. We woke up early and walked down to the Salt pond to watch the sunrise and it was heaven. Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and Pemaquid Beach are a short drive. Pemaquid Beach is a beautiful white sand beach. There is a bathouse and concessions. There is a grocery store that has everything and is reasonably priced about a 2 minute drive from the house. Our only regret was that we were only able to stay 2 days. We definately want to come back for a longer stay. This place is truly a gem and I would recommend it for anyone. Thanks for sharing it with us!
A perfect "down Maine" experience. The harbors in the area, New Harbor, Pemaquid , and South Bristol are true fishing harbors unspoiled by tourist shops and large crowds. The house ( exactly as described in the listing) is the perfect way to be a part of the real Maine. The knotty pine walls throughout are in keeping with the experience and the screened porch was used extensively. The only noises you hear are the gulls crying and lobster boats hauling traps. There is a well-stocked grocery nearby as well as several good restaurants. Shaw's is within walking distance from the cottage. There is a surprisingly large sandy beach located in Pemaquid. Julia is very responsive and a pleasure to deal with. Her Property Manager is also very responsive. We would gladly return next year. Thank you Julia.
A few minutes drive to Pemaquid Beach and Pemaquid Point lighthouse. Also very close to the historic Fort William Henry, the largest fort in New England.
