Our modern barn conversion is the perfect 4 season retreat in the Hudson Valley. Just 2 hours from NYC, our home is set on 3 acres of woodland and surrounded by protected forest and nature preserves. Close to Woodstock, Saugerties, New Paltz, Stone Ridge, and endless outdoor activities.
You will enter our property through a 6 foot privacy gate built to keep the deer out and the dogs in. The circular gravel drive way has plenty of parking space for up to 6 cars. The 19th century carved wood doors salvaged from a prison in Southern France lead to our beautifully renovated barn with hand hewn timbers and wide-plank pine floors.
A modern spiral staircase leads to the bright and airy top floor featuring living, dining and kitchen areas with mountain views and exposed beams throughout. The kitchen is fully equipped with cooking essentials and ample space to prepare meals on the soapstone counters and stainless steel island. The open floor plan leads to the living and dining rooms furnished with a mix of modern and vintage pieces. The centerpiece of the living room is the wood burning fireplace built with fieldstone harvested from the property. A spacious deck is just off the living room with comfortable seating and a propane grill. There is a full bath upstairs with soapstone counters and Carrara marble.
The unique upside down layout of our home keeps the 3 bedrooms on the main floor cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. The first bedroom has a queen size bed. The second bedroom has a full bed. The den doubles as cozy reading nook with access to the patio or a third bedroom with a comfortable queen size sleeper sofa. We also have a pack and play for the little ones. The large, first floor full bath has a full size tub and beautiful Carrara marble.
The backyard has a large bluestone patio with an outdoor dining table and lounge chairs. The original barn door slides open to reveal an outdoor dart board. Our outdoor fire pit was built with fieldstone harvested from the property.
We met and fell in love in L.A. then moved to NYC, bought our dream home in the Catskills and got married in the backyard. Now we spilt our time between San Francisco and our cabin in upstate NY. Someday we will live there full time, but until then, we love hosting New Yorkers who are looking for an escape from city life.
This place is stunning. Spent a long weekend here with the whole family (including the dog!) and we had a blast. Just a perfect little escape from the city. The yard was awesome, especially with the pup, as was the well appointed deck. Just felt comfortable and private. Cozy even in the summer. And all within striking distance of great hiking, swimming, and dining.
We stayed for seven nights this summer. This house is gorgeous. If you are thinking of booking a trip to the Catskill Mountains, this is the house for you. It is impeccably decorated and everything is new. This is the first rental house that we have stayed in that we didn't feel like was full of cast off furniture. The photos in the listing are exactly representative of what you will find at the house. The yard is even bigger than it seems in the photos and our little dog did not know what to do with himself as the entire property is fenced and he could explore freely. We thoroughly enjoyed the back deck with comfortable furniture and a movable umbrella that would block the sun from whichever angle it happened to be coming from. There is a table that seats six on the lower patio and we ate there several nights. Beware of mosquitoes in the summertime, this is the mountains. There are citronella candles provided so make sure you light those if you are eating at or after dusk. The fire pit is so much fun and we roasted marshmallows for Smores.
The owners are incredibly responsive and were very great and talking me through how to work the AppleTV. Having the AppleTV was great because we could watch our Netflix and they have other channels. The owners even checked in on us halfway through the week, which we thought was really thoughtful.
The house is located in a remote area so you will have to drive to get to town or the parks, but that suited us fine. We went hiking in Minnewaska State Park and from several trailheads at the Mohonk Preserve. We went swimming in Roundout Creek, which we learned about in the great house manual that the owners provide.
We had our little dog with us and a friend's dog came up over the weekend and the owners were incredibly cool about letting us have friends and an extra dog. The dogs are not allowed on the furniture, which is very typical and understandable for rental houses.
We would definitely stay at this house again. It was a fantastic week!
My family and I stayed here for a long weekend. We really enjoyed the house. When we arrived, pretty much everything was as expected. The house was clean, and everything that was advertised in the listing was easily found around the house. The homeowners were also quite responsive, both on email as well as by phone. Below are specific comments for various areas, but overall, everyone in the family really enjoyed the house.
Most everything was clean. The bathrooms, the kitchen, and the bedrooms -- none of them had any issues. The room with the pull-out couch was pretty clean as well.
There are ample plates, bowls and other things associated with a good kitchen. The house is amply stocked with stuff one needs to cook with, and the dishwasher worked very well. I personally loved the trash compactor -- I'd never use one before, but boy is it amazing. Definitely saved us from having to find a dumpster during our stay.
Shower pressure was good. The water was a bit off, but we attribute that to the rural pipes. Everything was clean, though. A ton of towels were provided, and basic toiletries were provided as well. Very nice to not have to worry about much here.
They are cozy, but my family was comfortable in all of the rooms. The house has a pack n play, so that was really helpful. The pull-out couch is an inflatable, and it stayed decently firm throughout the weekend. The rooms are downstairs, so you do hear people walking above in the living room/kitchen, but our kids were able to sleep through everything, so I guess it was fine.
Very nice sized yard, with a cute forested area beyond the main yard. Everything was fenced in, so no need to worry about deer wandering in. The grass, plants, etc., all seemed to be well taken care of. The upstairs deck was pretty nice and fit us all comfortably for dinner. The grill worked well, which is all one can ask for when it comes to grills, so that was fantastic.
My wife loved how the house is decorated. It was all very cute and modern. We even asked the homeowner where we could buy one of their decorative pieces. The only downside to this house is that it's ~25-30 minutes to drive to New Paltz or Kingston. There are grocery stores/restaurants closer, but if you want to explore, you're looking at a minimum of a 1-hour roundtrip drive. That said, it felt nice to have that secluded vibe.
We come to the Hudson Valley all year round to enjoy endless outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, climbing, canoeing and swimming. The surrounding towns and hamlets are rich in history and full of wonderful locally owned shops and eateries. We are close to Stone Ridge, High Falls, Kingston, New Paltz, Woodstock, Saugerties and Hudson.
