Classy chalet completely furnished; everything you need for from cooking to laundry. Deck overlooking lake. Two bedrooms with queen beds, one twin bedroom, extra twins in lower recreation room. 4 rooms with TV. WiFi. Lake is perfect for swimming and boating. No motor boats, so quiet and lovely atmosphere. Private dock with diving board and rowboat. Outdoor activities galore. Relax and enjoy. Barryville offers rafting, canoeing and kayaking outfitters. Thrilling zipline also in Barryville .
Fish in our private lake for bass, trout, pike, and perch. Just 3/4 of a mile down our road is the 1,064 acre Hickok Brook Multiple Use Area where you can eagle watch , study nature, hike, snow shoe, mountain bike, cross country ski, take photographs, and hunt. There are lots of Black Bear, wild turkeys, and deer and other animals. Basically there are activities for everyone. We love to go down to the lake to swim, sun, read our books and watch nature. In the winter we love to cross country ski, but you can also ice fish, snow shoe, skate, etc. Every season offers a myriad of lovely surprises.
My husband and I are from Portland, Oregon. Paul is an Oregon native and went to college at Santa Clara, U of Oregon, and graduated from U of Oregon Law School. I grew up in Indiana, I went to a girls' boarding school in Massachusetts and U of Michigan, where I received a BA in English Lit. Later I attended Portland State where I earned a teaching certificate. My husband is a real estate broker and I am a retired high school English teacher. We live right on the Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington. We love the outdoors and enjoy travelling to NY and spending time in the Catkills. The proximity to NYC is another attraction as well as being with our family, including four grandchildren, children, sisters, and many nieces and nephews. We have several family gatherings at our chalet and my sister's property just 4 miles away.
Mary Schwabe purchased this chalet in 1995
We discovered our chalet when we visited my sister in the Catskills, where she has an old converted barn, pond, and large lot. We fell in love with the area and could not believe that such a place could be so close to NYC and our daughter and grandchildren. The lake reminded me of my grandparents' house is the woods, on a beautiful small lake in northern Wisconsin. I wanted my grandchildren to have the same fond memories as I had growing-up__swimming, fishing, canoeing and playing card games with my cousins who we only saw in the summers at my grandparents' cabin.
Wildlife in abundance: eagles, osprey, woodpeckers, owls, flocks of wild turkeys and geese, bears, deer and little red foxes are there to entertain you. Spectacular sunrises and clear starry nights enhance a feeling of peace and well-being. If its cold and rainy you can build a cozy fire. You can take long hikes along the lake or pick blueberries along a nearby road in July. You can see a play in Forestburgh, go to the movies in Matamoras, play golf in several golf courses, attend an outdoor concert in Bethel Woods, sunbathe or read a book on the dock or go to the Barryville Farmers' Market on the weekend. What's not perfect?
Dear Paul, Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us over Memorial Day weekend. We loved the house and took full advantage of it over these past several days. We were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather over the weekend- we could be seen on the dock all day reading and lounging, with an occasional jump in the lake or row boat journey to cool off from the strong sun. At night, our competitive natures emerged during multiple rounds of Cranium. We look forward to more trips to 147 Barker Road. Many thanks again for your hospitality.
Great location. Paul is very friendly and attentive to making sure we were comfortable and had a pleasurable experience.
There aren’t enough good thing to say about this home and its owners. We rented it for two days just before thanksgiving. When Paul heard our arrival had been slightly delayed due to a work related event, he kindly offered us a late departure the next days and even made special cleaning arrangements to accommodate our situation. In addition he offered very helpful tips regarding activities and nearby attractions. The house itself is very clean, charming and comfortable with a large kitchen, fireplace and cozy living area. The lake is clean and so healthy that even this late in the year yields good fish. Thank Paul and Molly for a wonderful stay, we can’t wait to visit again!
The house has a very welcoming feel to it and we especially enjoyed the living area and fireplace. Paul went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed and was a superb host. We look forward to returning. Thank you!
Terrific place to stay with all the comforts of home. The lake was beautiful along with tubing in the Delaware. Humming birds are on the deck feeding along with hawks flying above. Our family enjoyed this home last year, as well.
The only problem we had was we booked it for only two months . We should have done three.
From the time we arrived to the time we left, the entire experience was excellent! The owner, Paul, was very communicative and made sure we knew all the ins and outs of the chalet and what we could do for entertainment. The house was huge! Very spacious for the 5 grown adults that stayed for the weekend.
Marketplace and a brick oven pizza place were 5 minutes down the road in Edlred if anything was forgotten at home. All amenities were included in the house, even some much needed, and usually forgotten ingredients and/or toiletries. There was even a laundry machine and dryer!
Bikes were in the basement, which allowed for a leisurely bike ride around the lake while my other house mates took the row boat for a spin. Exercise room came in handy when you wanted to work off the dinner made in the fully stocked kitchen, including utencils, plates and cookware.
All in all, this was a home away from home. It had everything you needed and more!
The only tricky issue was the garbage and the bugs! Paul did warn that the gnats swarm the lights and its imperative to keep the doors shut, even when inside, and he was right! There is no garbage service, so we had to drive our garbage down to the county landfiill, which was interesting to find and had limited hours.
I would definitely recommend the house to friends and family and look forward to returning next year!
The area is definitely rural, many hills and small lakes and ponds. It is never crowded and there are many activities available, especially if you like the outdoors. Artsy communities such as Barryville and Narrowsburg offer cultural experiences, Bethel Woods is a great attraction, the Delaware River is beautiful and scenic, plus it offers rafting, canoeing, tubing and fishing.
