We had an enduring lover affair with Greece stretching back over many years. In 2000 we took a holiday on Zakynthos, an island we had been visiting for thirty years. We saw and bought the piece of land that we built Maistrali( West wind) on with the help of an English architect. The house was featured on 'Grand Designs' as part of the story behind the house we built near Ross on Wye in 2006, you still see re runs on TV.We are retired furniture and interior designers and we hope you enjoy this house as much as we do.
Robert & Jane Ellis purchased this villa in 2000
We bought this piece of land in a mountain village overlooking the Ionian sea in an area of out standing natural beauty so we could build an Eco home, private, secluded, tucked neatly into the landscape to enjoy this beautiful island and to share it with our guests. We have traveled to Greece since we were students the first time by train to Athens and sleeping on beaches. We have traveled extensively in Greece bu this special places holds our hearts. Maistrali is designed so that the rooms are on a radius and therefore no room is square. Architects will tell you that the perfect space is never square and so it is.
The panoramic sea and island views from all the rooms and terraces make Maistrali unique. In one day you can see the Cunard cruise ships sail majestically up the Cephalonian channel, the sea between the islands, the mountains on mainland Greece silhouetted against the sun rise often with a touch of snow on the tops. The migratory wild birds, we saw ten ospreys this spring and the fantastic array of wild flowers in spring. This island was called the 'flower of the Levante' by the Venicians. Maistrali is spacious and a wonderful living space ,the house works.
Our family (2 adults, 2 teenagers and a five-year-old girl) spent two amazing weeks in this lovely villa.
The property was clean and well-maintained, well-equipped. We would recommend it to everybody.
Conde Nast Traveller in 2009 said that ‘the north of Zakynthos was barely touched by mass tourism’. Not much changes here, the fishing boats put out their nets and you are often temporarily halted by flocks of sheep and herds of goats tended by old men on their donkeys. Zakynthos is the most Southern of the Ionian Islands and one of the greenest. It boasts fertile hills, translucent seas, soft sand and the smallest pebble beaches and staggeringly beautiful countryside.
The beautiful north of the island is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty and is perfect for late, spring, summer and autumn holidays. Compared to the rest of the Mediterranean it is affordable. The beaches are suitable for young children and there are many charming seaside villages with plenty of good restaurants. The island has an Italian feel from its long association with the Venetians.Zakynthos town ,50 minutes away is a triving, charming and enchanting place to visit. It has a wealth of good shops.
Other Activities: Sight seeing and visits to the many historic sites on the island is strongly recommended
