About the property

Summer is booking fast!

This charming 1950's Cedar Log Cabin is the perfect spot to get away from it all and still be able to enjoy the attractions of St Louis. Beautiful drive through State Conservation Areas take you to a 20+ acre lake and this little country jewel. Darcie's little cabin has been referred to as "A Little Slice of Heaven" by many of her guests. All of the vintage treasures that you'll find throughout the cabin will help transport you to a simpler time when recreation and relaxation were a way of life.

Great for small families who want to spend quality time together and get away from the hustle and bustle of life. Take the kayaks out on the lake or just hang out on the private dock and observe nature. Fishing poles are available if you want to fish for catfish, blue gill, crappy or small-mouth bass.

Also perfect for couples looking for a quiet, romantic get-away. Very comfy queen bed with a view of the lake features soft linens and vintage quilts. You'll enjoy cooking together in the cute, vintage kitchen with the original sink and faucet. (Yes, it leaks a little, but that's part of the charm). You'll find everything you need to cook a delicious meal that you can enjoy on the picnic table overlooking the lake. Anything that you find in the stocked pantry is your's to use.

Start a fire in the big stone fireplace. Firewood and all the fixings for S'mores are provided free of charge! There is also a fire pit out by the lake. It's fun to sit by the lake around a fire and listen to the big bull frogs!

One of my favorite spots at the cabin is the front porch. You'll find two twin daybeds which are very comfortable. It's a great place to curl up with a book and look out over the lake. It is not heated or cooled, tho, so if you're using it for sleeping, you may feel a little warm in the summer or cold in the winter. On this porch you'll find a corn hole game, life jackets (mostly kids sizes), fishing poles, and extra lawn chairs.

At night, the living room can be transformed into your own private movie theater! A fabric screen can be lowered from the ceiling and the Epson Movie Mate projector will play DVDs (nice selection to choose from) or you can stream movies from the ROKU player. The Roku has a Netflix account and other types of programming for you to enjoy free of charge. There is also wifi so you can check email or browse the internet.

You'll also find lots of board games and books and magazines to read as well as Lincoln Logs and Legos for the kids. My kids have generously donated the use of their Wii as well! There is a tv that can be hooked up to either the Wii or the Roku if you want to use it instead of the movie screen. I do not have cable tv, however, because I want to encourage my kids to turn the TV OFF. (Hint: sometimes I unhook the wifi too, and "pretend" that it's not working. If you do this, though, please remember to turn it back on before you leave).

Another great convenience is the washer and dryer located in the kitchen area. There is also detergent provided.

I'm happy to allow you to bring your pet as long as it's potty trained. There is a non-refundable pet fee of $50.

About Darcie Sheehan

I'm a mom of two great kids, a realtor and a decorator who lives in Saint Louis. It has always been a dream of mine to own a lake house. When I found this sweet little log cabin, I couldn't resist buying it. I filled it with everything I love and try to spend as much time there as I can.

It has always brought me a lot of joy to share my cabin with my friends and family. About a year ago, I decided to share it beyond my circle of family and friends and offer it for rent to others. I love reading the reviews that people write in my guest book.

Darcie Sheehan purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Darcie Sheehan chose Missouri

I love this property for so many reasons, but the reason that I bought it was because it was close enough to St Louis, where I live full-time, that I could actually envision really getting to use the cabin even when my kid's schedules and clients keep me busy.

I love the location of the cabin on this little lake. It's very near the spillway, so if the lake is high enough, it creates a little waterfall that can be heard from my cabin, especially after a heavy rain.

I love that the kitchen still has the original metal cabinets and the old sink. It leaks a little but I kind of think that's part of the charm!

I grew up in a small town in Iowa. I love that my cabin is part of the rural communities of Pacific and Eureka, where people aren't too busy to chat with you.

I wanted to give my kids a little slice of the kind of life I had when I was growing up in Iowa. I have been able to give them some incredible memories because of this little cabin:

Easter Egg hunts by the lake, swimming off the dock in the middle of the lake on a hot summer day, opening Christmas presents by our little tree with a toasty fire in the fireplace, watching movies on our projector while we all snuggle up on the pull-out sofa, catching turtles by the waterfall, fishing off the dock.

I've made lots of amazing memories out here with my friends, too: making margaritas in my little kitchen, kayaking with my friend out on the lake, girls weekends with bbq, music and roasting marshmallows in front of the fire pit.

What makes this cabin unique

It's really quiet out here. You may sleep better here than anywhere else in the world!

Bull frogs, crickets and hoot owls will lull you to sleep. Have your morning coffee out on the dock while you watch the ducks float by.

I've included many vintage touches throughout the cabin: old quilts, hand-hooked rugs, English stoneware dishes, old photographs. In fact, there is an entire wall in the kitchen which is made up of vintage paint-by-number paintings. I want my guests to feel like they're transported to an era where things were slower and people took the time to watch a sunrise or just listen to the sounds of nature. I've also made sure to include modern amenities like wi-fi, a projector, Roku and an automatic coffee maker.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time. Everything went off without a hitch. Really quiet and peaceful and the neighbors were nice as well. You may be receiving a lot of inquiries in the coming months from people attending Purina events. I posted some pics of the cabin and scenery on my Facebook page and they are a big hit!!! Hopefully we'll be back sometime in the future!

AWESOME cabin, just a few minutes away

  • 5 of 5

Sort of stumbled onto this cabin not knowing there were places like this close to STL. Truly a hidden gem. Outside there were fishing poles, fire pit, floating dock, kayaks, gas grill to keep us busy all day. Caught a few blue gill and smaller catfish; watched the neighbor get a good sized bass. inside there were board games, playing cards, wifi, movie selection, projection screen, nintendo wii (with mario kart) to relax with at night. Close to at least 3 conservation areas for a morning hike. Fantastic cozy getaway, the major downside was that the weekend was only 2 days... had a great time!

Owner's Response: Wow! What an awesome review! Thank you so much for all the wonderful comments! Nothing makes me happier than knowing that my guests had a great time at my cabin and loved it as much as I do. My boyfriend and I are working hard on our cabin across the lake from this one. You will have to check it out once we are finished renovating it. It is going to be spectacular! Three beds and 2 baths on a gorgeous lakefront lot. Stay tuned! We hope to have you as our guests again very soon!

Sweet little vintage cabin

  • 4 of 5

My family of 5 stayed a week and a half in this adorable doll house of a cabin. It is just as beautiful as it appears in the photos and is well stocked with just about everything you might need. Keep in mind that the photos were taken with a wide angle lens, so the cabin spaces are smaller than they appear. Given that it is a vintage cabin, there are a few things that could use some TLC, but that did not mar our experience in any way. I made every meal of the day throughout our stay in the tiny kitchen. Darcie, the owner, was very nice and responsive. She has an obvious talent for shabby chic/flea market style decorating. We felt so at home. We will definitely come back and will recommend to all of our friends and family. Our family had a great time swimming, kayaking and fishing in the small lake. Our days were filled with hiking (Young Conservation Area), cave exploration (Onandaga Cave State Park, 45 min drive) and exploring nearby St. Louis (City Museum is very cool!). Our nights were filled with s'mores, fireflies, the sound of frogs and watching old movies like The Parent Trap (1961) on the large movie screen. Good old-fashioned summer fun!

Perfect place for relaxing & unwinding from reality!

  • 5 of 5

What an AWESOME getaway! Hidden gem couldn't be more true! All the amenities of home in this rustic little cabin on the lake! It was just what our family needed to relax & unwind from reality! It was so nice to come back to after a day of sight seeing! We enjoyed lots of fishing, Smores over the fire pit, a movie on the "big screen" and most importantly, making memories to last a lifetime! Darcie was so generous to open up her cabin to us & was so very helpful if we had questions! Being able to visit with her in person & learn more about the cabin was an added bonus! We will definitely return if our travels bring us back to the area in the future! We will also recommend the cabin to anyone who has travel plans in the area!

Remote and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

Located right on the lake within a quiet neighborhood with friendly neighbors. Enjoyed sitting at the picnic table looking out over the lake while drinking my morning coffee. The bed was so comfortable. Other pluses were the Epson projector for watching movies and other programs, the full-size refrigerator and the microwave, great cell phone reception and WiFi. What would have made the trip better? If the back yard had a full fence – neighborhood dogs came into the yard and so did the ducks and geese.

Owner's Response: Hi Cathie! Thank you so much for your very nice review! I am so happy that you enjoyed my cabin so much! I have thought about putting up a little fence but I felt it wasn't worth it to obstruct the gorgeous views of the lake so I've put up with the occasional neighborhood dog wandering onto my property. Hope it wasn't too much of a nuisance for you. I look forward to having you visit us again soon!

The cabin is located only 10 min away from Six Flags Amusement Park. We are about 20 minutes from Purina Farms in Grey Stone, Mo.

We are 25 mins away from Kirkwood, Mo which is a really cute town that boasts one of the best kid's museums in the country, The Magic House. Kirkwood has a Mayberry feel to it with a cute downtown featuring lots of great shops and restaurants.

It's about a 35 minute drive to just about anything you'd want to do in Saint Louis: The world class Zoo is located in Forest Park which was recently voted the best city park in the U.S.! It's really gorgeous and packed with lots of fun and FREE activities!

Busch Stadium is about 40 mins away if you want to take in a Cardinals game. Scott Trade Center is in the same vicinity, as is the Peabody Opera House--both are great venues to catch a concert.

It's a very pretty, very relaxing drive from the Cabin to the city and I find it to be very enjoyable as long as you aren't trying to commute to and from the city during rush hour. Even during rush hour, it's not as bad as what some cities experience.

Although the cabin can house 6 guests, it is most ideal for a couple or for a small family. I charge a $20 per person fee for each guest after the fourth guest. Also, I ask that you not entertain guests while you are renting the cabin unless the maximum number of people including the members in your party does not exceed six people.
The cabin is in the country in Missouri. It's not the Ritz Carlton. I do try to be very accommodating and considerate of everything you might need to make your stay really enjoyable.
